The First Coast Business Hall of Fame “Portraits of Success”

The Florida Council on Economic Education will host this 13th annual First Coast Business Hall of Fame on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida’s Conference Center. On this special day, a new group of outstanding business and community leaders will be inducted as the Class of 2011. This year’s Honorees will be recognized as “Portraits of Success”--because mastering the art of leadership is the mark of a true Hall of Famer. The Class of 2011 will paint a bright future for Florida’s First Coast. We hope you join us in honoring these “Portraits of Success.”

Marty LanahanEvent Chair

Event Purpose and HistoryIn 1999, The Florida Council on Economic Education created the First Coast Business Hall of Fame to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves through their contributions to the six-county First Coast community (Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau and St. Johns counties). The honor is reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to the community through their business and civic achievements--serving as lifelong examples of integrity and service. Members of the Hall of Fame serve as inspirations to young people who will follow in their footsteps. Proceeds from the Hall of Fame support the economic and free enterprise education programs and financial literacy initiatives of the Florida Council in the First Coast Area. Established by Governor Askew in 1975, The Florida Council promotes economic education, financial literacy, investing, and entrepreneurship throughout the state’s K-12 system. By investing in the education of children, the First Coast business community has a tremendous influence in developing the leaders and citizens of tomorrow. Event Audience• First Coast business, education and philanthropic community • First Coast CEOs, business executives, organizational presidents, executive directors• Public servants (i.e. local, state, and national government officials)• Friends, clients and colleagues of Hall of Fame members and Inductees• FCEE board of trustees, advisory council and education center directors This celebration is the Must Attend business event of the year! Induction into the First Cost Business Hall of Fame is a prestigious honor; attendees join hundreds of influential business professionals, educators and government officials in celebrating this occasion. For 35 years, the mission of the Florida Council on Economic Education (FCEE) has been to prepare Florida’s young people for personal and financial success through educational programs in economics, the free enterprise system and personal financial literacy so that they become productive members of the workforce, responsible consumers and wise investors.

This mission is increasingly relevant in today’s economic environment. In an effort to address the needs of a financially undereducated population, the FCEE offers teacher training, standards-based programs and curricula to K-12 Florida teachers to enable them to deliver life-changing economic education to their students.

We have exciting news about the Florida Council on Economic Education and the school districts in the First Coast! With proceeds from last year’s Hall of Fame, the Florida Council trained First Coast AP Economics teachers to prepare their students for success. This summer we are beginning to prepare First Coast middle school teachers to implement the rigorous new economics and personal finance topics embedded in Florida’s new Civics curriculum. Proceeds from this year’s First Coast Business Hall of Fame will help fund comprehensive training currently being planned for all First Coast middle school teachers. Recognizing that middle school teachers have had limited or no experience studying or teaching economics, this training, in collaboration with Duval County Public Schools, the Jacksonville Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and Florida State College at Jacksonville, is intended to reach over 200 First Coast teachers and over 30,000 middle school students. Because of your support, the Florida Council is able to offer all of this at no cost to teachers.

The FCEE also offers a variety of classroom resources to K-12 teachers, all of which are free of charge. During the 2010-2011 school year, the FCEE distributed these resources to over 1200 teachers, reaching nearly 82,000 students.

Founded in 1975, The Florida Council on Economic Education is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is funded by leading corporations and individuals throughout the state. The Florida Council is affiliated with the Council for Economic Education, as part of a national network of state Councils and Economic Education Centers.

Today’s leaders painting a bright future for the leaders of tomorrow...

Won’t you consider supporting economic education for your teachers, for your children,

and for the future of the First Coast?
