What is Portrait Photography?
Is the capture by means of photography of the likeness of a person or a small group of people (a group portrait), in which the face and expression is predominant. It often shows a person looking directly at the camera.
History of Portraiture
Portrait photography has been around since the invention of the camera. 1st it was developed as a cheaper and often more accessible method than portrait painting.

As the equipment advanced, the ability to capture in shorter exposure times allowed photographer more creative freedom and other styles of portraiture photography.
Essence of Portraiture?
Three-Point Lighting
The Key Light The key light is placed to one side of the subject’s face.
The Fill Light Light placed opposite of the key light. The brightness is
about ¼ of the key light.
The Rim Light Placed behind the subject and are often higher than Key light
or Fill light, but not brighter than key light. .

Strobe Lights ~ Flash Most lights used in modern photography are a flash
lights. The lighting for portraiture is typically diffused by bouncing it from the inside of an umbrella, or by using a soft box.
What you need for flash?
Reflector
Umbrella
Soft Box
How about lenses?
PRIME LENSES!!!!
Why?
Classic focal length is in the range 80-135mm.
Zoom lenses make unflattering distortion.
Wide APERTURE!!! F/1.2; F/1.4; F/1.8; F/2
For a full body consider this lens: 70-200mm at f/2.8
Too expensive?
