Welcome to a World Heritage

The social and trade relations that Porto has developed over time with Northern Europe, the

Mediterranean, Africa, Brazil, India and Japan, are reflected in the city’s rich Cultural

Heritage. From the remains of Visigotic and Celtic villages, Roman roads, bridges and Castros

to Romanesque and Gothic churches and Cathedrals built during the Medieval Age, centuries

of mankind-built heritage are to be discovered in and around Porto.

The recognition of Porto, by UNESCO in 1996 as a World Heritage City, is undoubtedly a

tribute to its wealth of over two thousand years of history. This nomination reflects the

commitment of the Municipality and Central Government since the early 80’s with the urban

regeneration projects that encompass both social and cultural interventions.

At the beginning of a new Millennium, Porto

is proud to present a Historic Centre consisting of over 150 classified monuments.

Porto is Portugal’s second-largest city, with 300 000 inhabitants, and the heart of an area of

great vitality, with a population of 1.2 million, ideal gateway to

the undiscovered North of Portugal.

The friendly welcoming nature of the Portuguese people, highly professional and cost-

effective services are a guarantee of a successful Event and will give you something to

remember in the future.

PORTO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

A New Airport in Porto

Having undergone intense renovation works, the Francisco Sá

Carneiro Airport now receives passengers and other users in

the greatest of comfort, taking up the role of primary travel

hub for the north-western corner of the Iberian Peninsula.

The new terminal no longer operates on a single floor. For

comfort and operational reasons, the design provided for an

expansion in height, so that arrivals and departures can now

take place on different levels, a measure that facilitates the

terminal’s expansion. Large commercial and leisure areas and

other passenger facilities have been installed on a mezzanine

floor. The Terminal’s architecture confers on the airport the

status of a modern and functional airport.

The public and check-in areas were scant for the traffic

volume, in particular the frequently congested check-in area,

making it difficult to ensure the desired quality standards. The

enlargement aimed at significantly increasing capacity in this

area. In this phase, approximately 60 check-in counters have

been installed, leaving room for an increase to 120 counters

within the framework of a future expansion.

The baggage handling system has been completely refurbished,

fully automated and equipped to scan the entire checked

luggage. The enlargement includes a pier that, along with a

thorough remodelling of the apron allows for boarding and

deplaning to be performed through 9 passenger contact gates.

Restaurants, Bars, Cafés, Casinos

Wining and dining in Porto is more than a pleasure and a satisfaction of the senses, or even a

spiritual taste: Porto, as everybody knows, is renowned for its cuisine and wines, especially

the famous Port, Vinho Verde and Douro.

The local restaurants and wine cellars offer the extraordinary flavours of the Portuguese

dishes, which include shellfish, fresh fish, salt cod (bacalhau), a wealth of meat dishes,

superb monastery desserts and cheese.

At the old quarter Ribeira it is possible to find not only the traditional restaurants with

Portuguese cuisine but also different bars, pubs and cafés.

At "Foz", by the seaside, there are typical and modern restaurants facing the sea, as well

as nightclubs, discos and a wide range of nice terraces overlooking the beach.

In the city centre, there is a variety of old traditional restaurants, cafés and bars, side by side

with the most modern ones.

International restaurants are also available for those missing home.

Two Casinos with gambling rooms and daily shows can be found near Porto,

one to the North and the other to the South.

Port Wine Cellars

Port Wine, a symbol of Portugal in the world, holds the history of a country and its people

and has become through the years a cultural landmark of the work, experiences, knowledge

and art gathered through generations. Encloses in itself years and years of history and

tradition, and it is attached to a region - The Douro Region - whose beautiful landscapes,

source of attraction since the first moment for never to be forgotten, were influenced by it.

The Port Wine cellars are the right place to discover this

Portuguese wine and all of its history.

Open to the public, they give you the opportunity to taste this precious nectar, to meet its

evolution through the years, the region where it is produced and the way it is obtained.

Museu do Vinho do Porto – Port Wine Museum

The Port Wine Museum is settled in a warehouse dating from the eighteenth century that

belonged to the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro (Alto Douro

Vineyards General Company). It is intended to be an information centre on Port Wine, able to

lead the visitors throughout the commercial history of the city as it relates to the world

famous wine.

It is a museum of the Port Wine commercial activity, integrating pieces of archaeology,

ethnography, faience and china, furniture, textiles, copper engraving plates, glassware and

many other interesting elements including the documentary set.

Museu do Carro Eléctrico

The Tramcar Museum, open since 1992, due to the effort of the S.T.C.P. (Porto’s transport

services) was created to become a lively and dynamic institution, so that the collective

memory of Porto, a World Heritage City, may not be lost but solidified.

The permanent exhibition comprises a collection of 16 tramcars, 5 tramcar trailers, 2 backup

cars, engines, armatures and combining components.

The building where the Museum is installed can be rented for events such as banquets,

cocktails and special events. The tramcars can also be rented

for special transfers along the waterfront during the event.

Fundação de Serralves

The Serralves Foundation is a cultural institution established for public benefit.

Its aim is to stimulate the public's interest in contemporary art and environmental issues,

using as its principle vehicles the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, a multidisciplinary

cultural centre designed by the internationally renowned Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza

Vieira, and the Serralves Park, a natural landmark which comprises a 1930s mansion,

surrounded by an 18 acre area of gardens, wood and farmland, dedicated to environmental

education and preservation.

Portuguese Centre of Photography and Soares dos Reis Museum

The former prison Cadeia da Relação houses the Portuguese Centre of Photography and has

suffered a general restoration. The exhibition area was also increased and new conditions

about its functioning were established, especially in regards to caring for the significant

photographic collection housed here.

The Soares dos Reis Museum occupies a building from the early 1700's, once a royal palace.

This Museum has a major collection of work by Soares dos Reis and a collection of 19th

century Portuguese painting.

Casa da Música – The House of Music

Casa da Música was one of the first ideas to be launched, one of the flagships, if you will, of

Porto 2001 - European Capital of Culture. A project that does justice to the rich musical

heritage of Porto based on a whole tradition of musical schools and academies, music

societies, different groups and bands and numerous nationally and

internationally recognised musicians.

With its crystal-like shape and panoramic rooftop overlooking the city, the building designed

by Rem Koolhaas promises to become a landmark in Porto. In addition to fulfilling the

purpose for which it was designed, it is destined to become a cultural and tourist attraction.

PORTO AND THE NORTH OF PORTUGAL

MINHO

A distinctive coastline with countless unspoiled beaches,

evergreen mountains, great history, imposing manor

houses and patrician estates, well-preserved monuments

and masterpieces of contemporary architecture, joyful

country festivals, a variety of colourful handicrafts and the

unique Vinho Verde, Portugal’s northwest province has it

all. All the major cities in this beautiful region, proud

guardians of the nation’s origins,

are less than an hour’s drive from Porto. One should not

miss a visit to the Historical Cities of Guimarães and Braga

or a stroll in the National Park of Peneda Gerês.

DOURO

The Douro River, after which this region was named, flows

eastward from Porto as far as the Spanish frontier. Explore the

river by boat or by train and delight in all that Nature offers

you. Depending on the time of year, the hills may be dotted

with almond or cherry trees in flower or they may exhibit a

hive of activity as the grape harvest sends pickers up and

down the terraced vineyards that rise up the hills along both

banks of the river. Enjoy the vistas as you relax on the deck of

the boat and bask in the summer sunshine. By the time you

arrive in the heart of the Douro Valley, you will be in the

perfect mood to explore the universe of wine production and

all its secrets and pleasures…

TRÁS-OS-MONTES

«Beyond-the-mountains» could not be a more appropriate

name for this province in the northern hinterland of Portugal.

Rugged mountains, an unspoiled countryside, untouched

historical villages, the healing and purifying virtues of thermal

springs, traditional cuisine and the genuine hospitality of a

people proud of their roots and traditions,

all are hallmarks of a region that has been cherished and has

remained relatively unchanged generation after generation.

Beautiful Cities such as Vila Real where the magnificent

Mateus Palace is located, Chaves, gragança or Vidago, are well worth a visit.
