WAR OF PROFIT

Spices has historically been a source of tension and a factor in conflicts that start arising for other reasons, including territorial disputes, a fight for resources, and strategic advantage. The whole

illustrations portray these events by using metaphoric comprehensions and allegory, juxtaposing the current issues with the past.

PROJECT I

Page 5: Portfolio: Songjerm Viriyavaree

The project is part of a broader research aiming to understand the future impact of these incipient forces upon the contemporary discourse on the field of Visual Languages with a focus on their significance for Communication Design education.

How the digital techniques have interpreted ancient human practices? And on the contrary how to apply ideas developed in the digital space to static medium? How visualization could redefine the relationship between qualitative and quantitative data, and how data, information, and knowledge can be synthesized and translated into visual devices? And which visual device can offer a better medium for this translation?

More specifically in “Chronology: The Distortion of Time” we investigated these Communication and Design issues:

Representation of timeInteraction with static mediaIntegrating multiple perspectivesNarrative devices for representing qualitative data

The aim of this project was not only to visualize historical data about different issues (chosen topics: the war on resources, the role of mythical creatures, intensive vs. non intensive production of food, Thai visual imaginary, the representation of woman in fairy tales, rails transportation, media attention for freaks) but exploring how to communicate and visualize them through a narrative approach.

The flood in Bangkok was devastating to us as a Bangkok citizen. So during the incident we was assigned to design a newspaper cover based on our stories about the flood. My newspaper was mainly about visiting the affected area and

how we prepared ourselves for the water.

WAYFINDING MAP

Wayfinding Map in Chulalongkorn University Campus for the Visually Impaired is a research-based project by Songjerm Viriyavaree, with Somjai and Rongsun as a representation of steak holder, that investigates and analyzes the usage set of typography, symbols, and signs to efficiently communicate with the visually impaired.

The research is based on the collection of twenty low vision cases from the Prasat Neurological Institute and Foundation of the Blind in Thailand, under Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen. All of the selected cases implemented a series of tests using dots, lines, planes, color intensities, shapes, and typography.

Rigorous analysis of the precedent cases revealed vital information concerning the effective methods, usage, and design of graphics that led to the development of new graphic principles for the visually impaired. Based on the newly established system, a new set of graphic elements evolved, creating an effective communication system for the visually impaired. The graphic elements would be applied to maps aiding the navigation of those with visual impairment through unfamiliar spaces. In some cases where users need additional guidance, tactile elements would be employed to enhance and support the existing graphics.

Due to various complications, many visually impaired patients tend to attend universities that provide amenities for handicapped users. Currently, the majority of these users choose to attend Thammasat University because of its supportive facilities and environment. The project sought to develop a supportive design for the visually impaired and encourage their attendance to Chulalongkorn University through enhancing its amenities and facilities.

This project aims to create a prototype of bus maps in Chulalongkorn University to raise the public’s awareness and nourish the understanding of the visually handicapped. This research seeks to find a strategy to create an effective form of communication with patients suffering from various types of visual defects without interrupting the general public. The project itself could not change the environment, but it surely could make life easier for people with visual impairments to live in the society. By providing supportive and beneficial amenities, it would encourage people with various types of visual defects to engage more in the society.
