A TEMPORARY CHURCH FOR CENTO’S DIOCESE
was born with the intent of design a new church for Cento's (Ferrara) inner city, burdened by the seismic events of May 2012, and currently lacking of suitable places of worship, given that all the area's major churches are now inaccessible. I tried to give a solution that answered the request of architectu-ral merit and as well as the one of temporariness, envisioning a complete recovery of the already existing patrimony in approximately 10 years. As a matter of fact, I thought that in the urgent situation of crisis and uncertanty caused by the earthquake and its destructive consequences, architecture could give answers in a relatively short amount of time, helping repairing both the fracture between man and enviro-ment and the one inside the community itself, procuring spaces that could help the citizens take back symbolic places, often made inaccessible and unrecognizable by seismic events.
is integrated inside the capuchin friars' park located in the Madonna della Rocca's Sanctuary, symbolic location for Cento's popolation and caracteri-zed by the impressive variety of arboreal species and in general for the area's aesthetic merit.I also considered the fact that the estimated duration of the building, between 5 and 10 years, could without any doubts initiate a process of architecture's appropration by the community, who, having to make it "their own church", will want to recognize its unique values, which are caracterized by the location where it's situated. It beco-
mes impossible then to make use of prêt-à-porter prebuilt structures that bring a inevitabile sense of sequentiality, which doesn't help the process of identification and the building's collective appropriation. On the other hand, the necessary aspect of temporariness has imposed the presence of further attention, mostly to the constructive system. as a matter of fact, wanting to favour the preserva-tion of the land, used as a garden by the friars of the convent, it was necessary to exclude the presence of cast on site foundations in reinforced concrete, since they relea-se harmful substances into the soil and are especially difficult and onerous to remove..
I therefore tried to design a project which could relate to a kind of architecture that could facilitate the appropriation of the building by the community, thus making reference to easily recognizable forms and traceable to the typology of the church, though without neglecting the meaningful context in which the building is located; non si è inoltre trascurata la necessità di smontare completamente la struttura nel momento in cui questa non si renderà più necessaria:not neglected was also the need to completely dismantle the structure in the moment in which it isn't neces-sary anymore: to this purpose I privileged the way of dis-assemblying and considered the expected duration, such as to trigger a process of appropriation also due to the specificity of the place I chose to put the insertion of the building in the context, before the possibility to assemble it again elsewhere.

The constructive system is based on an idea patented by a studio in London, Facit Homes, which has developed a technology to fabricate the parts necessary to carry out the work onsite. The technique is based on the use of interlocking wooden boxes forming both infill walls and bearing walls. The foundations are made through poles screwed into the ground on which are then laid the beams that will support the boxes that form the slab. The supporting partitions are made using the same technology and the roofing is supported by polanceau trusses. The elements are made hollow inside and once the structure is completed, insulation based on cellulose coming from newspaper’s paper is pumped in the cavities by a central opening, that is later on closed. This technology is particularly useful for the construction of the church in analysis since it’s completely dry mounted, and easy to remove. Furthermore, the possibility to make an infinite number of custom cut pieces allows us to adapt to the shape of the trees that cross the structure without any problem or additional expence. I then chose a logic way of disassembly, and recyclability of the materials, all the boxes in fact, once opened and emptied of the insulation inside them, can then be recycled as ordinary wood.

the roofing is sustained by polanceau trusses in wood and steel, made inbuilt to the septum through bolted steel connections. In correspondance of the diagonal wall fits a beam of laminated wood of larger dimensions suitable to support another truss of reduced dimensions. The ceiling is padded by the boxes' system, which, given the great thickness and considering the fact that they are made integral with each other thanks to connecting elements both in wood and steel, works as windbracing.
This structure, designed for an outdoor use, recalls the form of the internal confes-sional made of translucent panels, but in this case the side covering is the same as the church and fence. The seat was created with the intention of offering a sheltered place for perso-nal reflection within the park, but also a place that enables people to confess outdoors, when possible, or to simply chat and be in the company of friends and family in moments of leisure.
the design of the altar implies a concept of versatility that makes it adaptable to different situations.the cover plate was originally designed in wood, but could also be realized in marble, in case there were plans to consecrate it by inserting relics. The other slots created by the components could be used to hold decorative items such as plants.

CARPE DIEM - A PROJECT FOR THE SHARING OF PUBLIC SPACE
Carpe Diem is an application designed as part of a competition organised by the urban centre of bologna, with the intent of gathering ideas to improve the quality of life within the city's historic centre. It's an app designed for mobile devices that aims at creating a virtual infrastucture that enhances and diversifies the wide offer already existing in the area.
We believe, as a matter of fact, that the quality of our public spaces is a consequence of every activity thought for the population and that a foundamental contribution comes from active citizens, who, with their spontaneous efforts, make up the many different facets of the city's character/personality. The intent is therefore to extend the boundaries of public space, involving citizens, not as final users, but as temporary actors in the place they live in.
Bologna is one of Italy's most important cities, to the point to be described as a metropolitan city, and alrea-dy has all the necessary requirements for a quality public space, especially in the already established zones of the historic centre. for these reasons it seems superfluous to introduce new physical changes while it's necessary to have a virtual infrastructure able to facilitate and bring value to the broad existing sprectum of activities in the area. The goal is to create a shared
vision and to create it with the contribuition of everyone; this work, in addiction to a practical purpose, has therefore an additional mission to investigate the collective identity and to increase cohesion through partecipation. The final result takes the form of a personal organizer of Bologna , that can list in detail the wide range of activities avaible. It is thus an application that allows any user to be informed about the events taking place in the city and to actively partecipate by proposing activities organized personally but open to all citizens. The theme of customi-zation is basically the ability to receive informations regar-ding only those topics that are considered more intere-sting, specifying, through categories, the range of activitiesthat one prefers. This structure must also rely on a system of mobility support that provides driving directions and encourages the movement by public transport.
The app is based on the volontary use by the users, who, by proposing events and interacting with those uploaded by other users, improve the service. The activities can be proposed by ordinary citizens, associations and busines-ses, as well as by the government that, through this servi-ce, can keep up to date the citizens on all the initiatives andservices offered.
The following pages contain the tables presented for the contest.

Bologna is famous in Italy for its dwellers’ commitment in political and social issues. In the past the public space was where people actually used to meet and discuss about common problems and possible solutions. This value of the space started to vanish many years ago, and nowadays the emotional connection between people and places is less present then ever. What we need to do is to fight the loss of interest of the community in the city life and to support the identity of the place.
The info graphic shows the activities of a sunday morning: most of them are about culture (in pink) and sport (in blue).

*An application for computers, tablets and smartphones which gives to the dweller an interactive picture of city’s possibilities.
*A presonal agenda of Bologna’s events to show out the numerous ongoing activities in details and just at once.
*A device for the dweller that informs him about every event he could be interested in, and gives him the possibility to submit a new event, giving his personal contribution to the life of the city.
*A structure based on a mobility-support system that provides indications and encourages the use of public transport.
*A program that improve as much as it is used by the people, thanks to the feedback of the users.
*Not physical intervention but virtual infrastructures to gain a systemic view that emphasizes the existing activities. *Create an image of the city shared among the dwellers and made of each one contribution*Investigate the identity of the city and increase urban cohesion through participation and activism.
C O N C E P T
Saturday afternoon is one of the moments when the city comes more alive. In fact there are only few white areas, that rapresent the absence of activities.
On Wdenesday evening the events are mainly related to entertainment (in purple). Through this kind of display, you can easily identify in which areas the city is more lively.
Through conceptual views of the map of Bologna, the application gives an intuitive perception of the number and type of activities ongoing in the city at the considered time. This type of display within the application does not have a practical function but rather aims, on a theoretical level, to improve the collective consciousness and the cohesion of the city. In the images above three categories of example have been considered, illustrating how the use of the city changes during the week or within a single day.

11.30SUNDAY MORNING // 11.30 am
17.00SATURDAY AFTERNOON // 5.00 pm

Anyone who organizes an urban activity open to the public can load it into the application Carpe Diem using his 'user profile'; you have to indicate a category in order to classify and insert the event into the system, the idea of a taxonomy of urban activities is fundamental to keep users informed about what they might not want to miss. These activities will be visualized by every single user in a different way, depending on his features.
G E N E S I S
The activity is represented with a schematic symbol that provides some information and that remains associated to the activity itself in all the different layouts of the application. This symbol is formed by a series of concen-tric dashed rings, and each ring is associated with a color that represents the selected categories, while the number of strokes is proportional to the number of users who will participate. In this way the symbol grows over time, providing a useful feedback to understand the topic, the importance and the echo of activities.
From the description page, the user can access a menu that lists the possibilities of interaction that are offered. You can choose to:
* ATTENDING to report your presence; * ADD TO FAVORITES to follow the activities identified by the same categories;* WEB to go to the web page of the event; * ADD A PHOTO to upload a photo taken during the activity, which will be also displayed on the screen plots;* SHARE to link the event in a social network.
I N T E R A C T I V I T Y
AFFINITY - this kind of view can be defined “gravitation-al”, because it is based both on the position and the interests expressed by the user. In fact, more an activity matches the category of interest of the users and it is nearer to the user and more close to the viewfinder representing the user (in the center of the screen) the symbol will be displayed.
MAP - this screen opens onto a conceptual representa-tion of the city, as shown in the third table. By zooming on the part of interest, you enter the traditional map and you can browse and discover what is happening around you.
CALENDAR - this is the most practical view, it makes possible to have a list of all the activities day to day, showing also the time and the place. This is the only one that joins the symbol that encodes the activity with its name and type, making the consultation particularly fast, but also traditional.
The application also offers a navigation system for pedestrians and cyclists, which works in connection with the website of the local public transport company (TPER) and other websites like Google Maps. This will help users to be more environmentally responsible, trying to unravel the tangle of information currently available but not easily accessible.

The outcome of this process aims to reassemble the fragmented and partial view of everyone in an image that represents the mood of the city and the fluxes through its space. It want to shows to the user his contribution in creating the city , not physically, but considering its intangible aspects. The application is completely geo-refer-enced, in this way it aims to reconnect the virtual square, on which information circulates and discussions take place, with the physical square which, instead, appears increasingly emptied of its meaning and identity.

FAREWELL HOUSE IN BOLOGNA
The project involves the construction of ten funeral parlours and a hall for religious and laical functions in an site located in an indu-strial area on the outskirts of bologna, enclo-sed between the railway and via Zanardi. The lot, thanks to its specific shape, favors a visual path suitable to this purpose: it runs alongside a long tree lined avenue that leads to a vast irregulare area where the only element that rises is the hall, used as a lantern to attract the visitor's attenction. The facade of the hall is in fact made up of translucent glass plates, that during the day let light and sha-dows into the building, while by night they transform the internal structure in a cube of light. The rest of the complex is instead meant to be a freely walkable garden, with reference to the cemeteries located in northern Europe, where the tombs are arranged beetween trees and the organic paths encourage personal reflection. I therefore decided to bury the rooms and to treat them as a whole, with a
continuos front, although each one is equipped with a private entrance .I later on drew different accesses to their rooftops, over which runs a green path, marked in corri-spondence of each chamber by a high skylight, that, in addition to providing the light for the room itself, works as a tombstone and indicates the presence of the room below. The parking lot, located in the northern area of the lot, is shielded by a continuos wall, that opens only in correspondence to the two access points, the hall and the reception. The hall is intended to be made up of consecuti-ve levels: the entrance leads to an antechamber where the light comes in uniformly and the sha-dows of the exterior and interior can be seen, a second set of translucent panels shields the hall itself, where the light is completely widespread. The rooms, completely underground, run longi-tudinally. The first element that works as filter at the entrance is the antechamber, which leads to the main room, lit from above. the room leads to a small private garden.

TOKYO REPLAY CENTER
The aim of the competition is to develop a new leisure center in central Tokyo. The center must fit with the lifestyle of Japane-se society while offering a new method of entertainment designed especially for them. The Tokyo Replay Center is a new concept of entertainment. A complex with numerous private media rooms (similar to the popular karaoke rooms) where groups of friends can go to see old anime, to watch classic films, or to play video games in a private setting where they can feel comfortable.
For the same price that a karaoke session or an informal dinner would cost, people could rent a private room and be entertained with some of the best Japanese technological entertainment. The space has to be equipped with the best technology in audio and video quality while also offering an extensive menu of food and drinks to complete the experience. The Tokyo Replay Center aspires to become a reference point in this culture of leisure, a
must for the “otaku” (people with a keen interest in manga, anime, and video games) and all people interested in technology. It would be a place where you could find the latest releases as well as the most desirable classics.
In our idea user’s creativity plays the main role in an undefined and multi-faceted volume. The public space, wrapped in a glass box, is frag-mented into small and cozy islands to enhance sociality and comfort. A complex interwoven space, as opposite to the straight forward path offered by the my way two. the whole ground floor is a diffused shopping area, where the shops are organised in a market-like arrange-ment. A tree structure, redundant routes, plenty of cozy rooms and rooftop terraces are the elements of an environment designed to break with ordinary public spaces and make you feel like home. Karaoke rooms’ liquid crystal glass switches from clear to translucent and brightly lit when in use.
