VETERANS AFFAIRS COMMUNITY LIVING CENTER The VA CLC building is an addition to the existing building, almost doubling its size. The project was in the design phase, allowing me to do everything from the initial layout of rooms, layout and notation of all of the interior elevations, to completing floor plans, and modeling equipment and furniture. In this project, I worked specifically under the supervision of one architect, with the assistance of one other architect. This allowed for me to work on every aspect of the project. I was given the opportunity to complete the 3D modeling of the interior in Revit, which was a huge learning experience. PRELIMINARY

MERCY WEST HOSPITAL
In my first quarter of co-op experience, I worked on many different projects, but most of my time was invested in the Mercy West Hospital. At that time, the shell and core of the building were designed, and being put into drawing form. My job was to help develop these drawings, and make exterior elevations. In my second quarter, the project had developed into the interior fit-out phase of drawing. I developed many sheets of interior elevations, noted them, and updated the interior modeling. In addition, I was responsible for making any changes to the interior, and updating the drawings in accordance.

FORT ANCIENT MUSEUM AND LODGING
The Fort Ancient project presented us with a very interesting intervention to the ancient Indian mounds in the Fort Ancient park. We were required to design a museum and lodging for visiting scientists and researchers to stay and study. My concept was to develop a chain of intersecting masses, divided by program. The form was wrapped around the hill below the mounds, forcing visitors to interact with the mounds. In addition, placing the building on the hill below provided very limited visual impact on the experience of the mounds themselves. Right Page:

CCM SPATIAL PROFILE ANALYSIS AND TECTONIC TRANSLATIONS
I chose UC’s College Conservatory of Music to diagram spatial profiling and tectonics. In the spatial profile analysis portion, we analyzed the spatial profile, as well as the spatial territories, and finally the tectonics of the profile. The diagrams we created were then extrapolated in order to diagram the teconics of the spatial profile in a three-dimensional manner. Elements such as mass, frame, and plane were emphasized in this model, not based on the actual physicality of the space, but the way it is read through the senses.

CLIFTON LITERARY ARTS CENTER
The Literary Center design was a project where we were to design a space for visiting authors to stay and spend time writing. The second purpose was to gather communty interest, by providing a space in which they can come to read, meet authors, enjoy lunch, and even just relax in. The Clifton Literary Arts Center design started with much site analysis. We examined local libraries for precedents in our project, and did detailed site analysis of the Ludlow site in which our building was to be placed. Environmental forces, traffic, and the surrounding environment were all carefully examined to build the groundwork for our designs. My parti was to contrast inside and out, and to do so, I lifted the mass to the second floor, and kept the first floor very open with glazing. The second floor was cantilevered over, creating a partially covered plaza and walkthrough. The cantilever was angled in order to to draw attention upward, to show the importance of the mass. To give the second floor a more massive feel, I punched randomly shaped holes in the facade, which related to the interior spaces.

ARONOFF MODULAR SEATING
The basis for this project developed out of our Grand Stair screen project. We took the best concepts from the project, and as a group, developed a seating module which could be linked together to form a screen. The final model was designed by offsetting four diamond shapes stacked on eachother in such a way that the layers would link with other pieces. A portion of the plywood pieces were cut on a CNC machine, while the others were cut by tablesaw. The pieces were finger-jointed to emphasize the connection, all of which was done by hand with a router. The seat element was made of cream-colored seatbelt webbing, weaved together and tied into the base through slots created on a milling machine.

“BRICK” SCREEN DESIGN
In the brick screen project, we were assigned to develop a building block from which a regular screen could be developed. the building block was required to be comprised of three planar elements, which in some combination had edges aligned with all six sides of the rectangular space it inhabited. After many iterations, we selected a block, and made many copies in order to build a complete screen. The screen created a very interesting overlap of spaces, and allowed small views through to signify that it was not just a solid wall, but a screen.

GRAND STAIR SCREEN
In the preliminary phase of the development, we were asked to design a screen element that could link within itself in several ways, to allow for the possibility of many different arrangements. The screens would serve the purpose of not only dividing the space into smaller, more private quarters, but to provide a place for seating and even potentially a pinup space for flyers. The angularity of my piece came from a need to relate the module back to the space it was designed for. The DAAP Grand Stair is riddled with angles and projections, seemingly without order. Seating was developed in a shell form, to enclose the user.

FIFTY PERCENT CUBE
The fifty percent cube was a design project in which we were to develop a wooden construction that touched all six faces of a sixteen inch cubic space that it encompassed. Other requirements included the ability for the model to stand freely on all six sides, to be composed of two different tones of wood to delineate a system, and to create a model with an interesting composition from every face. My model was constructed of walnut and poplar boards, laminated together to achieve more massive elements. The pieces were constructed together so that they interlaced and extended outward, allowing the model to stand on the shortest dimensions.

DAAP COURTYARD REDEVELOPMENT
The requirements of this project were to redesign the courtyard of our school. The courtyard is a neglected, empty space that is used mainly as a cut-through to the nearby Clifton street. We were instructed to design an image of the ideal courtyard for our school, to draw in students and give it purpose. My concept was to develop a concrete bowl form around which students can gather, skateboard and socialize during their free time throughout the day. I placed seating arrangements throughout the space, and incorporated a lowered plaza space for picnic tables and a walkthrough leading to the building.

FARNSWORTH HOUSE
In the Farnsworth House project, we were assigned a set of drawings to be developed through the Rhino 3D modeling program. This was a great project because it was our first dive into 3D modeling, and was a fairly challenging project. Included in the work was a set of plans, elevations, and sections, An exploded axonometric drawing was created as well, by pulling apart the 3D model once completed, to reveal the inner-workings of the building.

WALSALL ART GALLERY DRAWINGS This project was a familiarization with the AutoCAD drawing program. We were directed to choose a contemporary piece of architecture, from which a complete set of drawings would be fabricated. Along with the drawings, spatial analysis of the building was also incorporated into the building. Interior spaces, along with exterior relations to surrounding architecture were examined. The Walsall Art Gallery is a gallery created by Caruso St. John, located directly in the center of an industrial fishing area in Walsall, UK. The building was designed as the focal point of the town, to breed a sense of creativity throughout the city.

21Fall 2009
Interests I enjoy computer modeling, hand sketching, and constructing physical models. Free time activities include photography, sketching, woodworking, working on cars, and spending time with friends camping, playing video games, and playing sports. I am also an avid member of the Boy Scouts of America, and I am currently an assistant Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout of Troop 350, my local scout troop. I love nature, and am especially fond of things like camping, hiking, climbing, and things that allow me to experience nature. I aspire to obtain my architecture license in the future, and work at a company specializing in local projects focused upon green architecture.
