FREUDENBERGMAIN

Wiechers Beck Architects have been in-volved with the development of the city of Freudenberg/Main since winning an urban planning competition in 1995. Over the course of more than a de-cade the practice has been active on all kinds of levels in restructuring and refreshing the cities urban fabric. From masterplanning to urban design, landscape design, architecture, flood protection and restauration, all kinds of measures have been considered during the process, resulting in several awards and a huge improvement of Freudenbergs living conditions.

Between 2005 and 2007, the main fo-cus lasted on the flood protection, the restauration of the medieval city wall, the restructuring of the resident´s ga-rages and the planning and construc-tion of a new river promenade, all in accord with the regulations of the pres-ervation order.Additionally, a new southern town entrance, including a temporary fair-ground, children´s playground, allot-ment gardens and public parking lot was planned and (partially) realised.(state as of September 2007)

Based on a field study in Tashkent, incl. on-site examinations, mental-map ques-tionnaires, interviews and city mapping, I examined the public space of the Uzbek capital in my diploma thesis. The specific character of Tashkent as the capital of a dictatorship and the combination of European, Socialist and Oriental con-cepts of urbanity in the city demanded an adaptation of the western definition of the term public space. The elaborated defini-tion and criteria to evaluate the public space were then related to the situation in Tashkent. A catalogue of public spaces was generated, serving as a tool to assess the problems and potentials by opposing them to the results of the questionnaires. The catalogue is designed to serve as the basis for the development of strategies to improve the public space in Tashkent. The practicability of this tool was demon-strated by applying it to the semi-public spaces of the Socialist residential areas. The developed strategies were finally employed in a rough urban design sketch for one particular quarter.

The City of Künzelsau, located in Baden-Würtemberg, initiated a compe-tition for the redesign of its main shop-ping street. The medieval center of the small town was in need of a high quality public space, primarily used by pedestrians.Apart from this requirement, the de-sign should reflect the particular history of the city and create a unique urban space, suitable for strengthening the local identity. In order to meet these parameters, the suggested materials for the main elements of the urban design were reduced to site-specific natural stone, concrete and water. In addition to 3 stone-wells, located at the ends of the shopping street, parts of the “Künzbach”, a small river flowing beneath the shopping street, should be uncovered after almost 100 years. The resulting pools, accompanied by a terrace, small bridges and per-rons, would provide the city with a re-laxed and unique urban space, subtly complementing the historic town hall, smithy and timbered houses.

add. information:

The design for the competition area proposes the creation of „Süd_Lauf_Park” as an initial spark for the sustainable urban development of Berlin. In connection with the conversion and extension of Airport Schönefeld and the relocation of the airport-express through Süd-kreuz-Station, a major revaluation can be expected for the competition area. The initial point of our design is the identification of three green corridors, which connect the inner city with the East, West and South. This led to the development of our superordinate SUSTAIN(EN)ABLE CAPITAL! – STRATEGY for Berlin. We suggest establishing linear parks with different programmatic em-phases, which connect and intertwine the railway territory with the ad-jacent areas and raise the standard of living. The specific proposal for Berlin-Südkreuz deals with its decade-long function as a service and railway area, responsible for its fragmentation and its image of an ur-ban periphery. The railway tracks and the surrounding brownfield will experience an image shift: from separating rift to an identity forming, linear innovation park which the urban fragments can allude to.The primary elements of “Süd_Lauf_Park” are lined up along the rail-way tracks, employing the motif of the floodplains of big rivers. The new terraced parkscape and its linear infrastructure flow along the tracks, opening up to the adjacent quarters by stairs, ramps and slopes in thematic sequences. These existing or planned thematic focal points, like dwelling, sports, business, research, traffic, culture, history and exhibition, are being reflected into “Süd_Lauf_Park” and are there transcended and transformed according to our main theme of sustainable innovation. Filigree, solar-powered innovation towers, acting as service-points, exhibition-facilities, workstations, viewing platforms and transfer points between different mobilities, mark the new urban space and become symbolic icons. The site will also be equipped with a free of charge W-LAN that provides a new quality as it combines virtual and physical space in the public realm.

QINHUANGDAO

The task for PJAR Asia in this invited competition was to develop a sustain-able strategy and a design for the re-use of the West harbor of Qinhuang-dao.As a co-project leader I was primarily involved in the design and strategy de-velopment.The 450 ha site was re-organized by creating 7 sub-centers as core-areas for the surrounding neighbourhoods. An in-depth analysis on the current con-ditions and the future demands of the city led to a focus on tourism as well as on cultural and residtential functions as the main themes for the 7 centers. The surrounding areas are organized in a flexible grid system that allows for a variety of residential area types. The implementation of new, energy-ef-ficient building codes was suggested as well as the introduction of renew-able energies like wind power plants off-shore to supply the area. The concept also involves the adoption of a pedestrian friendly traffic system on the site. The former harbor rail tracks should be re-used as a public transport device, green links between the sub-centers should allow pedestrians to proceed independently from car traffic and large parts of the waterfront should remain car-free.

This design, located in a woodland in the SW of Berlin, deals with the topic of mobility and business trav-elling in particular.A 500 m long structure, housing restaurants, spa areas, conference rooms, a hotel and boarding hous-es, is stretched out between the AVUS (highway) and a small lake in the East. This structure, consisting of 3 re-peatedly folded layers, hovers on a “forest” of slender steel columns among the crowns of the trees of the surrounding woodland and offers an exclusive and unique place to relaxe for the stressed-out businessmen. With growing distance from the highway, the needs of different types of travellers are adressed, ranging from facilities for one-day appointments to the quiet and luxu-rious boarding house units for long-term stays.

BMW Berlin demanded a new depot for storing spare parts for its motorbike production. The site, currently used as a parking lot, was also to contain a multi-storey car park, serving as a substitute for the present parking lot.The design introduces two detached buildings for meeting the demands of BMW.While the hall of the depot, covered with a sawtoth roof, blends in with the surroundings in terms of its dimen-sions, the split-level parking garage tops the other factory buildings and de-fines the spatial boundary of the factory premises. In order to reflect the modern image of the company, lightweight materials such as polycarbonate panels were used as facade material. These translucent elements, tinged in the primary colours of the company´s logo, have an impact both inwards and outwards. As bearers of the image of the com-pany, they can be easily recognised from a distance while at the same time providing the workers with a lucid and enjoyable working atmosphere.

The extreme climate of the Central Asian steppe creates a big challenge for any kind of building project. The particular task of designing a re-search station in such a hostile region was even more demanding. In order to enable long-period research on different fields, a self-sutaining shel-ter, also meeting the requirement for a comfortable living environment for the researchers, needed to be designed. The proposed design offers living and working space for 6 permanent resi-dents/sccientists and guests. The 2 up-per storeys mainly serve as the living area for the scientist while the 3 lower storeys contain the laboratories, garag-es and a service floor. The main axis of the building runs from East to West, allowing the scientist´s apartments and leisure areas to be lo-cated on the cooler Northern facade. This position also assures the rooms of natural lighting despite the heat. The 3 lower storeys of the building were sunk into the ground for climate rea-sons and the shell was equipped with a water-based cooling system which uses the colder ground for temperature regulation.Furthermore PCM devices were em-ployed as insulation, providing cooling during daytime while spending warmth at night.

GUBEN

Despite its strategically favorable loca-tion on the border to Poland, the city of Guben has to fight a shrinking process shared by many other East German small towns. In order to deal with this problem, a shopping and business complex should be created close to the town hall in the long-neglected centre of Guben. The proposed design serves as an anchor element for the revival of this area. While a new office building completes the block structure formed by the town hall an the music school in the West, the Eastern part of the site is occu-pied by the new 2-storey business and shopping complex.Three new buildings and an existing historical house define an intimate market square as well as two smaller squares to the South and East. The contrasting facades, combining the typical red bricks of North-East Ger-many towards the street with a glass facade towards the square, emphasise the specific character of the new com-plex.

add. information:

For several decades the area between the river Pegnitz and the pedestrian area of Tuchgasse and the famous market square of Nuremberg had been neglected. In order to revitalize the area, plans for a mixed-use building complex had been developed.Within the strict limitations of the local building laws and preservation regula-tions, the design needed to mediate between requirements of modern-day lifestyle and traditional building fabric.By adding two 4-storey houses for residential and business use along the Pegnitz and Winklerstraße respectively, the typical block structure of Nurem-bergs old town was restored.Inside this block, along the extension of Tuchgasse, 2 further buildings for shopping and business use define a new, 2-storey passage, which links Pegnitz and Nurembergs “Hauptmarkt” and creates an intimate public space for residents as well as tourists. The use of regional materials, primar-ily sandstone and wood, and a modern adaptation of the typical roofshape, combined with the glass and steel fa-cade of the passage, root the design in the local tradition without denying its modern origin.

K I R C H B E R GInstead of the current “Liederhalle”, a design for a modern, multi-functional convention hall was demanded by the city of Kirchberg.Located on a sloped area on the West-ern outskirts of Kirchberg, the conven-tion hall consists of two attached vol-umes, the entrance hall and the main convention area. They are wrapped by a wall that serves as the linkage between the two vol-umes and as a mediator between the building and the topography. While the entrance hall follows the orientation of the street, the main axis of the convention area is directed to-wards the “Stadtkrone”, the medieval city centre of Kirchberg, allowing a vi-sual connection from the terrace on the Northern end of the convention hall.Due to the placing of the convention hall on the site, two diverse outside spaces were defined, that can addition-ally be used for events.

“Fossil”, a popular American manufacturer of watches and leather accessories, expanded its business to Switzerland in 2007. Within short time, five shops in Zürich (2), Basel, Lucerne and Lugano had to be taken from the de-sign stage to finished construction. The design standards of “Fossil”, in particular their furniture system and CI-concept, needed to be adapted to the Swiss regulations and the existing shop layouts.Dependent on the particular shop, these adapta-tions ranged from meeting technical requirements to fulfilling the Swiss heritage protection regula-tions.

The task for PJAR Asia in this invited competition was to develop a concep-tual design for an office tower in the new CBD area of Hangzhou. As a co-project leader I was primarily involved in the design and strategy de-velopment for the building as well as in the preliminary studies on massing and spatial organization. The design option PPF reflects the dif-ferent architectural heritages of Hang-zhou. Each of the three parts of the tower is themed by colors and materi-als to fit the past, present and future.A solid skirt building featuring wood and brick elements forms the base for a state-of-the-art office tower that is ex-tended by a glass box serving as meet-ing area, sky garden, climate buffer zone and media facade.
