HALF STREET MARKET PROPOSALHALF STREET S.E. - WASHINGTON, D.C. - halfstreetmarket.org
BackgrouNd
In the burgeoning new community of capitol riverfront (just north of Nationals Park), sits an unused, federally owned warehouse that occupies an approximately 30,000 s.f. footprint. adjacent to a Navy Yard metro entrance, it is in a prime location to be better utilized as a community and city asset. along with other community members, I organized a campaign to transform this blighted property into a community space, public market, and small business incubator.
coNcePt
the concept of HSM is a fexible and open space that can host a public market, community events, small business incubator kitchens, a restaurant with a teaching kitchen component, and retail space. In approaching this design challenge, the input I recieved from community members and potential users suggested that flexibility was the key - being able to sub-divide and open up the space depending on the event or uses at a any specific time. In addition to HSM’s mission providing a community and city benefit, the design also had to activate the property, which is accoplished through large operable bay doors that front Half Street. * Sketchup model by self; rendering by others.
