2.1.dwelling and commercial building at butant neighborhood

The dwelling and commercial building project located at Butant neigh-borhood took as main point the team perception of the lack of free public space in the area. Therefore the building design strategy was conceived to create more permeability at the location by raising it from the ground floor. Then it could be used as a free use area and could be-come a square, a meeting place or just a different passageway for pedestrians. There are also two commercial areas, one situated at the underground level, which is connected to the ground floor by a geometrical ramp, and the second one is the raised irregular block. The shape of the vertical hous-ing tower was designed to bring to the dwellers unexpected meeting spaces. Then, the central structure system allows the free rotation of the L, U and O

    N

type floors. The obtained result was a tower with plenty of semi public areas that also create different spaces for city contemplation.

2.2.cultural complex and navigation engineering school at the Billings Dam

For a research theme that proposes mobility and multiple uses in a single area, the team had designed a cultural and educational complex that takes advantage of the site`s topography and its relation with the water. The location is at the border of Billings Dam, a So Paulo destitute sub-urb region, where the lack of public inter-action space is almost an urban issue. Combining the geography characteristics of the area, the horizontal landscape and the multiple uses offered by the complex - a navigation engineering school, library, engineering labs, restaurant and audito-rium - the team developed a platform structure for the fragmented building which considered all pedestrian flow possibilities. Therefore all rooftop of the each building turned into different kinds of public spaces to host concerts, meet-ings and collective activities. At the higher site level a ramp sets way connecting all the fragmented build-

ings. The sports area and the refec-tory are connected by a large opened reception square. Compared to the refectory level, the access to the audito-rium is lower, so that way it can also open its backside and become an open audito-rium to the free area. All the uses that need to be in con-tact with the water, as the model atelier and labs, are close to the dam border to favor the experimentations. The class rooms are in the lifted block above the created topography, contrasting with the fragmented pieces.

    2.3.social dwelling at 14bis square

The Project around 14bis Square, located in the Nove de Julho Avenue, in the city of So Paulo had as main purpose to keep the free and permeable ground level areas. Therefore the main strategy was to elevate the building from the street level to keep the original topography and also create an open space for public meet-ing. To give uniformity to the urban pre-existing surrounding landscape, the con-crete was elected as central material, as an urban continuity of texture. In the principal facade was de-signed a vertical circulation as highlighted element and it also allow the visual urban interaction. In that same surface it was used on it cobogs (perforated concrete brinks, typical in Brazilian build) as a venti-lation and insulation strategy and also for aesthetic composition. Each pavement has two flats with a

collective laundry and a large corridor for social interaction and common events. The housing unit was designed for the maximum use of 60 square meters. The wet rooms as kitchen and bathroom were separated from the intimate use with a large living room organized without walls, only the furniture layout define the space, and these, are the dweller`s choic-es. Bathroom, lavatory and kitchen share the same hydraulic column system. The intimate area is composed by two bed-rooms. The corridor is also used as a little library with large shelves along its length.

    Structural grid

The small single-family house located in the city of Goinia, Brazil was developed with minimum habitable space, but one that could allow great interaction between the different spaces such as office, living room and kitchen. The entire project was design as 1,8m x 1,8m grid, in whic=h was defined at first the structural elements, and then it were added walls that works as free surfaces one never cross each other. The windows frame had also followed the grid modulation. In the first floor the concrete is entirely covered by a huge book shelf that comes until the second level which is the office and the studio. The stair is the central element and its also the element

that separates the social and the service use. The intimate use is located in the separated volume and it also has different materials. The access is through a large catwalk witch connects the two bedrooms with the studio area, but this connection can also be a green area and a balcony.

Despite the huge number of urban intervention in the area, the Dom Pedro II Park on its nowadays situation doesnt work as a proper urban space for interac-tion, open events or leisure. The main reason are five viaducts that cross over the park, blocking the pedestrians flow and creating dead spaces underneath them, and also the Estado Avenue, that has a highway characteristic cross in the middle of the park impeding any kind of flow into the park. Therefore, the Project has the following ideas of dwelling and the com-mercial uses: - Water treatment in the river and border that allows an integration of the river with the city- Dirio Popular, Mercrio e Antnio Na-kashima viaducts demolition- Relocation of the bus terminal to three strategic points: close to Municipal

market, 25 de Maro Street and close to the subway station. And also appropri-ate the structure to crate a space for the temporary fairs, which are really popular in Brazil. -Relocation of the Estado Avenue to the outside of the park and changing its high-way characteristics to a normal avenue. -Relocation of the public school for the old and historical military building and design an outbuilding as a small library. -Research for nowadays use is to turn them into a commercial and dwelling area.- Tamanduate river enlargement and improve its water treatment system -25 de Maro Viaduct enlargement al-lowing two way cars crossing, pedestrian path and bicycle path-Create a different level for pedestrian paths that could also work as a free pub-lic space.

Left: visual geometrical pattern and colours studies. Above: disclosure exhibition poster

This work was an elaborate ver-sion of an advertisement material for a fictitious exhibition that would show the graphic, cinematographic and artistic work of Soul Bass. The most remarkable cinemato-graphic production of the artist was between 1954 and 1960, in the time that the movie advertisement was not associ-ated with the actors image but it was constructed by a group of symbols and hand drawings. Bass, therefore was not only highlighted for just being associated in movies with great circulation but also created a system of cinematographic signs that are truly a work of art as an animation. The start point for the study of the visual identity was to elaborate it

using the most important work of the artist The Golden Arm not just for the aesthetics quality, but because it was the language that defined his style. Such as movies animations that play with the idea of irregular bars cross-ing each other and transforming them-selves into other drawings the designed visual pattern for the exhibition was an appropriation of that irregular geometry The color palettes were decided after a study about Bass main works and the choice was based in repeated colors of his work. After the visual patterns develop-ment was designing the following materi-al: logo, poster, brochure, signaling plates and urban intervention.

Left side: technical drawings of the five temple types. From the left to right: picnostyle, systyle, eus-tyle, diastyle, aerostyle. Above: Book cover presented in the end of the reseach.

The research academic project Vitruvian Models belong to LABTRI - Tridimensional Models Lab - aimed the interpretations of Vitruviuss writings in his treatise De Architectura for the elaboration of a didactic material kit for architect schools. The material include two wooden models, that allow the study and research about the different temples typology, one DVD with all the explana-tion about the classical architecture from Vitruviuss writings, and a book that teach the geometrical process for the temples and theater designing. During the year of 2008 was developed in LABTRI the necessary study for the didactic material elaboration that throw one meticulous Vitruviuss treatise interpretation aiming the geometric and mathematic reconstruction used in the temple and public building conception at the Greek ancient time. On this period

was developed the metric-proportional of temple typologies (divided in In Antis, Pro-style, Amphiprostyle, Peripteral, Dipteral and Pseudodipteral) and also its inter columns (classified by picnostyle, systyle, diastyle, aerostyle, eustyle, tetrastyle, hexastyle e octostyle). From those previously researches and proportional studies the team trans-ferred it to a graphic system in CAD draw-ings, 3D models. My part of the research was focus n the temple models, the 3D renderings and all the text that talks about the historical context, the author and De Architectura book

The whole structure is a self-lifting metallic piece. This frame involves the electric equipment and also the cabinets. It has a folding roof and covertures. The material choice is based in the structural possibility and by the good protection of the internal equipment. The most complex module is in the hydraulic and electric system that works across of an embedded tube in the center. By this same axis, through a sys-tem of articulation and fit, the module will flip 90 degrees, thereby creating a new ambience.

The relationship between people, cooking, meal time and all the differ-ent social interactions around those two activities is the main point of this design. One of the most important spaces in Brazilian dwellings is the kitchen, not only because its functional but its also considered the best meeting place in any ordinary house. Versatility of space and adapta-tion to different topography types were technical start points. It was also consid-ered the industrial element characteristics like the modulation, easy assemble and maintenance. The pavilion is structured in three porticos that are supported by an adjust-able base for different topographies. For the removable floor, modulated in 60cm x 60 cm, was designed an iron grid for also has above it all the technical equipment. For light and temperature control were

used a glass layer that can be opened as a window and a wooden brise-soleil as a second layer. Attempting to achieve more flexibility, the kitchen equipment was designed according to the floor rail measurement. There are four module types and they are organized by their function such as: cooking, dish wash-ing and refrigerating, which were also thought as layout elements. They can slide into the rails and can be organized on different types of spaces. One goal of this project was also to be designed with sustainable ideas as water reuse and solar photovoltaic panels.
