ARGENTINA ANDELUNA CELLARS, MENDOZA UCO VALLEY ORGANIC

Andeluna Cellars is a winery and vineyard rich with history and romance – just like the country it calls home. This beautiful place is the inspiration for the name Andeluna, which was chosen to symbolize the romance and heritage of the Argentine moon illuminating the magnificent Andes Mountains that frame the Uco Valley near the town of Tupungato. The combination of great vineyards growing classic varietals with world-class winemaking creates flavors and wines that cannot be found anywhere else. Andeluna is dedicated to creating world-class wines, and the world is taking notice. They were recently named with one of the “Top 100 Wines of the World” by Wine Enthusiast, 2006.

ARGENTINA ANTUCURA, MENDOZA VISTA FLORES

Antucurá means “Sun Stone” and Calvulcura means “Blue Stone” in old Mapudungun language. Mapudungun (mapu means 'earth' and dungun means 'to speak') was the language used by the Pehunenches, the first inhabitants of the area where the Antucurá winery stands today in the Uco Valley in Argentina. The owners chose that name for their winery and vineyards because the grapes grow and develop naturally between the stones and rocks. The winery sits below the Andes Mountains using ancient viniculture traditions and new vinification technologies, to produce premium wines.

763097 Barrandica Malbec 2014 750 6

ARGENTINA CUVELIER LOS ANDES, TUNUYAN - MENDOZA

The vineyard was planted in 1999 with a density of 5500 plants per hectar. This is a similar density to those favored in Bordeaux but is rare in Argentina. Today the vineyard stretches over 55 hectares (136 acres) with 10 hectares still to plant. The main grape is Malbec. They have also planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot. This enables them to create they own blended wines and also contribute to those of Clos de los Siete. Basking in the warm, dry climate of Mendoza, cooled by the refreshing nigh air of the Andes, their vines are ideally situated to express the character of their various grape varieties in this stony, alluvial gravel soil.

FRANCE JEAN-PAUL & BENOIT DROIN, CHABLIS ORGANIC

The Droin family is amongst the oldest in Chablis, its members having been wine growers for nearly five centuries. Since the year of 1620, fourteen generations of vignerons have transmitted their “savoir-faire” down from father to son. The domaine`s extensive premier and grand cru holdings span the entire range of the Chablis stylistic repertory. From mineral La Montée de Tonnerre, Vaudésir and Les Clos to fruitier and softer-textured Vaillons, La Fourchaume and Valmur, with Montmains somewhere in between adding citrus and floral notes, site specific nuances of flavour (and Chablis is all about nuances) are accurately translated into bottle.

FRANCE BILLECART-SALMON, CHAMPAGNE

Billecart-Salmon is frequently cited for the quality of its cuvées. This originates from the great attention paid to the choice of grapes together with the partnership of the wine growers. They works some 30 hectares itself and is supplied by grapes from a total area of 140 hectares in 35 individual crus. Ninety percent of the grapes come from a radius of 20km around Epernay, where the greatest vineyards are concentrated.

FRANCE EGLY-OURIET, CHAMPAGNE BIODYNAMIC

With some of the choicest sites and oldest Pinot Noir vines of any producer in the Montagne de Reims, Francis Egly gives you classic fruit qualities that you typically only find in great Burgundy. There are yellow fruits evident in the Pinot Noir, suggestions of peaches and apricots, and even blood orange notes.  These are noble and complex qualities found in great red wine. More time on lees gives the wines added complexity ; added depth; and contributes to the intensity and vinousness of the entire lineup .    Perhaps the most remarkable wine of Egly-Ouriet is the “basic” Brut NV that is often better than elite level crus.  It is aged a minimum of 48 months on the lees giving it exceptional density, complexity and serious aging potential.  It is 100% Grand Cru.

FRANCE CHATEAU D’ORIGNAC, PINEAU DES CHARENTES

Owned by Yvan Meyer, Maison Sichel's Technical Director, Château d'Orignac has won accolades in France and throughout the world. It is made from two-thirds grape must (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) with one-third Cognac and takes almost 10 years to produce, which results in an intense, complex nose of peaches, apricots, honey, almonds and Cognac and an unforgettably smooth texture on the palate.

FRANCE DAUMAS GASSAC, LANGUEDOC / ROUSILLON ORGANIC

What other humble "Vin de Pays ", part of no official appellation, has been compared to France’s greatest wines ? To LAFITE IN 1982 and again in 1990 by Gault Millau, to  LATOUR in 1983 and 1985 by The Times, to PETRUS in 1985 by the Journal du Dimanche? What other mere "Vin de Pays ", has been hailed ‘the only Grand Cru in the Midi’ by Hugh Johnson, ‘Major Grand Cru’ by Oz Clarke, ‘one of the world’s ten best wines’ by Michael Broadbent of the white, ‘Exceptional’ from Parker, ‘Out-standing’ in the Wine Spectator ……?  Which "Vin de Pays" eludes any attempt at comparison but when young reminds you of a great Medoc whilst, as it ages, is redolent of the undergrowth and truffles found in great Burgundies

FRANCE CHATEAU LA NERTHE, CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE, RHONE VALLEY ORGANIC

This domaine could easily be 800 years old, even if the first document in which it is mentioned dates from 1560. At that time, the domaine was called Grange de Beauvenir and belonged to the aristocratic family Tulle de Villefranche originating in the Piedmont region of Italy. Back then, the domaine’s wines were highly renowned and seem to have titillated the palates of many rich and noble ladies and gentlemen, including the court of King Louis XVI. In 1991, the Château la Nerthe acquired 22 hectares of vineyards from Terre Ferme, whereby its total planting area grew to 90 hectares. Château la Nerthe thus became one of the biggest wine producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The terroir of the vineyards has a broad spectrum of various kinds of soil.

FRANCE CLOS DES BRUSQUIERES, CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE, RHONE VALLEY BIODYNAMIC

The domain has 8,5 ha. in Chateauneuf du Pape. It was founded by Claude's great grandfather. About 1900 his grandfather was one of few in the town to bottle the wine calling it Clos Courtil.  Until 1996 a great part of the production was sold to negociants. Claude's uncle is the legendary Henri Bonneau, one of the most revered winemakers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The relationship between Claude and Henri is strong as he is not only his uncle but his master as well. Claude learned everything from his uncle.

ITALY ACCORDINI IGINO, VALPOLICELLA / VENETO

The history of “Igino Accordini” began in 1821, when the grandfather of the current owners inherited in Valpolicella a piece of land of about 3 hectares, in a agricultural well-known area. in that period the vineyard produced only for the Accordini family, who used to spent springtime in this place. In the 60’s the father of the current owners planted new Corvina’s plants, the typical local kind of grapes, and built a new cellar for high quality wines production. In the 70’s the first wine with Accordini’s brand was sold: it was an “Amarone”, very different from others: it was richer, more fragrant, more slightly, more longevous than others well-known wines. In the first years of the 80’s, the son Guido, who is oenologist, started to work in the “Igino Accordini”, and began a difficult challenge: he wanted to make “Accordini” a leader of an high quality wines production.  And in fact Accordini’s history is made by high quality, innovation, experimentation: now it has 25 hectares of vineyards, the limited production and the new equipment guarantee another higher quality increase. “Accordini”’s vineyards are the result of meticulous studies and selections conducted by skilled technicians, to obtain the maximum of quality and typicality.

The winemaking revolution which in the last few years has taken place in Chianti Classico and in Tuscan winemaking in general could hardly have left untouched as well a historic winery estate such as Castello di Bossi. Develop to the fullest extent possible the potential represented by this estate and embrace modern technology, while respecting at the same time the character of the Chianti heartland: these were the tasks we set ourselves to bring our wine house into the highest ranks of international wine.

ITALY DARDO, TUSCANY

The Vignemastre project starts in 2005 when two winemakers, Filippo Artini and Dario Parenti, Le Uve (www.leuve.com), decide to create a brand with very specific characteristics: Good price/quality balance, express the varietal aromas of the grapes in the bottle (with no use of barrels which often make many wines look alike), limit the impact on consumers health and on environment (low sulfite levels, no tree cut down to make barrels).

ITALY LA VELONA, MONTALCINO

The vineyards of the farm cover an area of 12 hectares planted with Sangiovese Grosso which is the clone that produces Brunello di Montalcino. These are situated at an altitude of 280 meters above sea level, which is considered the ideal position for vineyards. The vines are placed at a distance of 3 meters (10 foot) by 1 meter (3,3 foot) from each other, which means 3300 every hectare (1335 every acre). The wines are grown with the "rammed cordon" method (cordone speronato) in order to better distribute the vines along their shoots and thus improve both cultivation methods and grape quality.

SPAIN CEPA 21, RIBERA DEL DUERO

Bodegas Cepa 21 is the new ambitious project headed by the Moro family, the owners of Bodegas Emilio Moro, one of the most emblematic wineries in the Ribera del Duero. The winery, which nestles in the middle of fifty hectares (around 124 acres) of its own Tinto Fino vines (the purest Tempranillo clone), is modern and equipped to bring out the very best of one of the finest varietals in the world.

754061 Cepa 21 Hito 2014 750 6

SPAIN EMILIO MORO, RIBERA DEL DUERO

The history of the bodega goes back three generations; Emilio Moro was born in the heart of the Pesquera wine-growing area and grew up treading grapes and racking wine in his native village of Pesquera de Duero, in the province of Valladolid. As early as 14 years old, Emilio helped his father sell 100 large earthenware pitchers of wine to local clients. Years later, after being initiated into the techniques of wine growing by his father, Don Emilio planted vines on the rest of his land and grafted them with 100 year-old local Tempranillo "Tinto Fino", coming from estates which have now disappeared, such as "La Rendeja"

We all had “real jobs” at big wineries when we first decided to start our modest venture.   It was kind of a secret side project for all of us, so Alias was an appropriate name for our first wines.  We kept our identities and sources as much of a secret as we could, working on Alias whenever we had time.  (Amazing what you can get done when you stop playing golf and wake up early on the weekends).  Once we started introducing people to our wines, it became apparent we were onto something.  In our first year, we were out of stock 4 times.  It wasn’t long before, some of us had to leave our day jobs so we could focus on Cult of 8 and Alias full-time.

USA HERB LAMB VINEYARDS, NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

By 1991, Mike Trujillo of Karl Lawrence Winery had discovered the intense quality of our hillside fruit as an integral blend for his successful new wine venture. The following year, Ann Colgin and her winemaker Helen Turley chose our vineyard as the sole source for her signature wine at Colgin Cellars. Given Mike’s winemaking expertise and friendship, it was only natural that they chose him to help create the first commercial wines, albeit less than 100 cases a year. He has helped to show that the wines from Herb Lamb Vineyards, including their own HL Cabernet Sauvignon and E II Napa Valley Red Wine, are ambassadors of the soil, climate and location, giving the grapes from this site benchmark quality year after year.

USA PETER MICHAEL, SONOMA, CALIFORNIA ORGANIC

In 1982 Sir Peter Michael established the Peter Michael winery on a square mile of rocky volcanic ridges that form the western face of Mount St. Helena in Sonoma County. From the beginning, the wine growing philosophy was modeled on the French tradition infused with a few modern influences: One, the vineyard terroir would be the single most important feature. Two, the wines would be elegant rather than overstated. Three, there would be a hundred-year commitment to the development of a great estate.

POE was founded in 2009 by Samantha Sheehan, an advocate of the vineyards and wines of Burgundy and Champagne. USA SCREAMING EAGLE, NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

Jean Phillips, a former real estate agent, bought the 57 acres (23 ha) vineyard in 1986 which was planted to produce a mix of varieties, most of which Phillips sold to various Napa wineries. With all white varieties but for 1-acre (.4 ha), approximately 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Philips sought the opinions of wine industry friends on the commercial potential of her estate before hiring Richard Peterson as a consultant, and subsequently met Peterson's daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett, who became her winemaker. The  release of the1992 vintage,through a combination of very low production numbers and highly positive reviews (wine critic Robert Parker awarded the wine 99 points), resulted in Screaming Eagle becoming one of the most celebrated and expensive wines in the Napa Valley. In 2006 the estate was sold to Stan Kroenke. In an ongoing replanting strategy, the vineyard manager David Abreu is employed to oversee the process. The vineyards are now tended by vineyard foreman Jorge Delgado, while the current winemaker is Nick Gislason. The vineyard area extends 48 acres (19 ha), planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The annual production ranges from 400 to 600 cases a year.
