LetterformThe combination of one letterform and one numeral into a single visual unit. I explored the relationship between the figure/ground of letterforms, and paid close attention to the specific elements of various typefaces.

Six-word autobiographyLess is often more. It is a significant challenge to capture one’s life in six words. By limiting the number of words you choose, each word must be chose carefully. By choosing the content you will be experiencing design at its fullest. When designed well, the typographic choices you make will enhance and compliment the content of the text.

The Hyperbet

Create Your Own AlphabetI created my own letterforms to make a full alphabet. The alphabet had to hold together in some way and had to be in order. I used sour gummy worms paired with other sugary treats to create “The Hyperbet.”

Font BlocksI chose to study the font Desdemona. We had to create font blocks based on our font. The blocks had to represent the unique characteristics of our chosen font. Only two images were allowed, and they had to contribute to the celebration of the chosen font. I chose a Halloween theme since the blocks were due in October.

Menu RedesignThe objective for this project was to redesign a menu that orignally was poor-ly designed. The new menu design is more appealing, easier to read and more visually appropriate than the original.

Alphabet BookThe goal of this project was to become more aware of, capture, and document examples of interesting typography. Through the process of clipping letters it became easier to distinguish between effective typography, and ineffective typography. Each of the 26 letters of the alphabet had to be shown 10 times.

Type Specimen BookThe assignment was to create a type specimen book that will tell the story of a typeface, and to realize the significance of typography in solving a multi-page design problem. Components of this process include research, analysis, content/concept, development, creating an organizational hierarchy, working within a grid structure, readability and legibility issues.

History

Gotham was inspired by the simplistic

and industrial signage found throughout

the urban landscape of NYC, as well as

1920s era sans-serifs like Futura.

designs, the new typeface

that somehow feels famil-

inspired it, Gotham inherited

an honest tone that’s as-

friendly but never folksy,

confident but never aloof.”

GOTHAM

High Falls, Rochester NYHigh Falls used to be the East and Alex-ander of Rochester. Home to Jillian’s adn various other bars and nightclubs, every-one who was anyone was there. Now, it is still home to a few businesses, The Gen-esee Brew House and Frontier Field, but the once booming nightlife of the area has come and gone.

The Genesee RiverThe Genesee River flows through the heart of Rochester, and pours out into Lake Ontario near Charlotte Beach. The river begins in the Alleghany Plateau, flows through Letchworth State Park and meets the Erie Canal in Henrietta. Boaters can travel certain parts of the River, but be-ware High Falls and Low Falls.

The Broad Street BridgeThe Broad Street Bridge Crosses the Genesee River in downtown Rochester. The hollow underneath the bridge used to be an aqueduct for the Erie Canal. Once the canal was moved, the area was home to Rochester’s Subway System. Now, the area is vacant except for vagrants, and graffiti artists who frequent the area.

”“ Rochester

In 1869, they founded the National Woman Suffrage Association as part of a split in the women’s movement. In 1890 the split was formally healed when their organization merged with the rival American Woman Suffrage Association to form the National Amer-ican Woman Suffrage Association, with Anthony as its key force. In 1876, Anthony and Stanton began working with Matilda Joslyn Gage on what eventually grew into the six-volume History of Wom-an Suffrage. The interests of Anthony and Stanton diverged some-what in later years, but the two remained close friends.

In 1872, Anthony was arrested for voting in her hometown of Rochester, New York, and convicted in a widely publicized trial. She refused to pay the fine, but the authorities declined to take further action. In 1878, Anthony and Stanton arranged for Con-gress to be presented with an amendment giving women the right to vote. Popularly known as the Anthony Amendment, it became the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920.

Woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself.

Susan Brownell Anthony was an American social reformer who played a pivotal role in the women’s suffrage movement. Born into a Quaker family com-mitted to social equality, she collected anti-slavery petitions at the age of 17. In 1856, she became the New York state agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society.

In 1851, she met Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who be-came her lifelong co-worker in social reform activi-ties, primarily in the field of women’s rights. In 1852, they founded the New York Women’s State Tem-perance Society after Anthony was prevented from speaking at a temperance conference because she was a woman. In 1863, they founded the Women’s Loyal National League, which conducted the largest petition drive in the nation’s history up to that time, collecting nearly 400,000 signatures in support of the abolition of slavery. In 1866, they initiated the Ameri-can Equal Rights Association, which campaigned for equal rights for both women and African Americans. In 1868, they began a women’s rights newspaper called The Revolution.

Grid ProjectThe purpose of this assignemnt was to learn how to follow four different types of grids — Column, Hierarchical, Modular and Deconstructed. The two featured are my versions of the Modular and the Deconsturcted grids. The theme of the project was the city of Rochester, New York.

BrochureThis assignemnt required me to create a brochure for the 2015 AIGA Con-ference in New Orleans. Aspects of the brochure to consider were the way it opened up & hierarchy of information and design — we had to appeal to fellow designers.

CalendarIn order to make this calendar I had to utilize many different elements of design I have learned so far. This is the first project I had to use tabs, and one of the first times I have used Adobe Illustrator. This calendar represents my family because everyone’s birthdays are called out. The finished piece was a gift for my 6-year-old, so I incorporated a motif appropriate for a child, yet sophisticated enough to not abandon design principles.

InfographicI took a fun spin on this “how-to” assignment. I had to create a how-to includ-ing pictures I took myself. Instead of using pictures I took, I drew one using Illustrator. I brought the image into InDesign, and went to town. I’m getting married soon, and thought it would be playful to create a poster to tell my man how to make me smile.
