User Experience Designer

Page 2: Portfolio

I am a creative, hard working, imaginative and passionate 2016 graduate designer. Digital Interaction Design from Dundee is not like design courses around the UK; in that it blends disciplines such as product, web and graphic design. The ethos of my course focus on designing around people and technology. I was taught to research, understand and learn from the people we are designing for.

This course has shaped me as a designer giving me the ability to craft memorable experiences, interactions and products using a user-centered design process. This portfolio shows how I have utilised these skills to make my ideas come to life.

Hello!

NOVONovo is a product aimed to help users understand and identify the early warning signs of a panic attack. Through the combination of a hand held product with a mobile application, Novo enables users to break down trigger point situations and gain an understanding as to when their panic occurs.

Novo is a project crafted from my University Fourth Year Personal Honours Project. This project was completely self-driven, from producing my own design outcomes to my own project brief, research and development. My design process is focused on user centric design approach, so this project was very heavily research driven.

My research topic was ‘social anxiety’ so I began exploring what this condition is, what it does to people and how people deal with it. I explored lots of different research methods including interviews with professional counsellors and sufferers, focus groups with University of Dundee Mental Health society and using forums gain insight into what it is to deal with mental health issues. Throughout my research I saw the strong links between social anxiety and panic attacks; people struggle when they experience panic in social situations, they will often avoid places where they know they may experience them.

This is the research that drove my concept and product generation. I developed Novo to give users a way to regulate their breathing and panic symptoms in a non-disruptive and subtle manner, allowing them to revisit these situations and circumstances with the confidence that they are in control.

Novo is a small hand-held wooden product, with a circular track of beads. This is what helps users regulate their panic, as this track is a breathing

technique, users breathing in and out as they feel around the beads. Embedded in this product is a panic button. If users find that their panic is progressing they press this button and a diversionary phone call is sent to the users mobile, giving an excuse to leave any social situation.

Along side this I developed an assisting mobile app. With this users are able to track how little or often they are using the product and how many interruptions they have had. They are also able to log details about interruptions, writing down what happened and what they were thinking is the best way to be cathartic. They are able to save these and if they are revisiting a similar situation they can reflect back.

The principle experience from this project is combining physical product design skills with my interactive thinking. The testing I conducted was all positive and this project encouraged me to find and develop new skills both practical and intellectual that I can now put into practice in the workplace.

BYTEBYTE is a magazine aimed at anyone who is interested in keeping up to date with or discovering more about educational technology. This may be currently practicing teachers who use technology in the classroom; it may also be an educator who is involved in or simply enjoys reading about new technology and ideas based on educational needs.

BYTE was a final submission for my Communication Futures dissertation module. In this module we were given the opportunity to study in depth an aspect of the field of communication and, importantly, relate this to my design discipline. I opted to craft a piece of journalism in the form of an Ed-Tech magazine; this was a compilation of articles informing readers about new and upcoming technology in the sector.

There are magazines that do cover this topic but they do not appear in the mainstream market. You will find these are only available, for the most part online, or by subscription order only; this is due to the niche market that these are aimed at.

Educational technology is no different from any other sector in the tech world, its probably even more dynamic as the focus is on youth and learning. So new ideas and technology are being devised and developed every day. Creating a magazine focused around this says to the reader that there is one place to look so as to keep up-to-date on new information. Byte is a stylish and punchy presentation of a critical subject, education-topical and making an introduction to new ideas attractive and captivating.

The craft and design of this was an exercise in digital print design. Having conducted a lot of research into similar technology magazines, I found the design to be off-putting to the casual reader. This led me to orientate my structure and design to be a delicate balance between that of a technology and an Art or Design magazine as this is how I planned to appeal to a wider audience. Taking inspiration from the likes of Wired, Icon and Wallpaper I broke down their structure, design style and journalistic style and using this created my own style for BYTE.

I learnt a lot from this project as it let me experiment with designing for print. Researching and writing the articles included gave me more insight and experience with research methods in a journalistic light. It also gave me experience in good judgement in handling text and image to communicate ideas and learn appropriate writing styles, structures and effective layouts in the production of a piece of journalism

Share SquareShare Square was a project which stemmed from a 2rd year University module. The task was to design a futuristic application that would represent culture in a physical space whilst attracting and entertaining users.

We created Share Square; an interactive installation where users can upload their photographs and stories to create a city’s collective portraitThrough an app, users take a photo or “selfie”, attached a story and choose a category their photo belongs to. With one swipe the photos are displayed on the walls of the city square, displaying the photos and story behind it.Not only did our mobile and tablet application engage users, the walls were used to connect passers-by as the community’s thoughts, views and culture are represented in a public space. It is a celebration of people, culture and a chance to utilise urban spaces, right at the heart of a 21st century smart city revolution.

On the 14th of November, we teamed up with Dundee City Council and Share Square made its debut in Dundee City Square to an estimated crowd of 20,000 people at the Christmas Light Night switch on. Over the course of two and a half hours, over 300 people’s engagements were projected onto the city walls, painting a collective portrait of Dundee’s community

This project gave me the first experience of what it takes to bring a concept to working prototype. During the run-up to the public display I handed all the public relations. This involved creating press

releases, press packages and dealing with local news outlets.

FLYTEFlyte is Northern Ireland based Invest NI start-up that is developing a dedicated flight-planning tool for commercial drone projects. This program will enable drone pilots to understand the environment they wish to fly in, bypassing time-consuming association with manned aviation.

I have been working with Flyte as an on-going UI/UX advisor, assisting with the design and continued development of the program and website. My involvement with this start up has ranged from creating initial branding guidelines and the company’s initial logo to assisting design decisions with external design agency. I have also been assisting in the creation the UI of the initial program. Working with system developers, we have been crafting a user-friendly beta system as well as designing and developing an assisting mobile application. These processes began with creating sketched wireframes, leading onto digital wireframes then eventually creating hi-fidelity wireframes for developers.

This role has given me insight into the time restraints of a live project as well as what it is like to work with clients.
