dinnertheatre

The 321 Theatre was a partner project and a chance to design a large scale building serving many functions. A dinner theatre, with a resturant, bar, and party rooms, 321 Theatre was made for your entertainment. Located in a com-merical and residential area of Cincinnati, we wanted to create an urban eclectic escape for fami-lies, students, and couples. Bright electric colors and textures bring the spaces to life during day and night. Using the concept of cluster-ing to organize spaces and to make cladding choices, the mass of the structure began to unfold as form and function combined. Green wall panels bring the exterior to life and hightlight the contrast of the theatre to the surrounding concrete land-scape. Light was also an important consideration in this project, both natural and aftificial, a large atrium space brings light in during the day, while at night, exterior glass panels illuminate the sky, allowing 321 The-atre to command attention in such a busy commercial area.

London was calling for an

people, sights, and sounds of London, England will always be a design inspiration for me after studying abroad there in the summer of 2009. Living in the center of this world class city al-lowed me to grow as a creative and cultured thinker. Working with a partner, we designed a large scale office building for London’s Canary Wharf district. The studio assignment was to focus on the sustainability of the work place, during and after work hours.

Utilizing a large winter garden along the street facing facade of the site, we were able to cut back on traffic noise, as well as create an interior atmosphere free of street pollu-tion. We also chose to utilize color as a main design element, colored glass and a new partition product, Mykon, was used to breathe light and life into all interior spaces. All design considerations were based on our occupant’s, Square Circle Co., goal to revitalize this once in-dustral corporate district.

medicalspa

Apeiro, a high-end medical spa, was conceived as a full experience for the body and spirit to be re-invented. Working in a team of two interior designers, two graphic designers, and myself as the lead architectural designer, we created everything about our seductive escape: the building, space planning, textiles, environmental graphics, logo, branding, and even an iPad application for patrons to use as a tool for both entertainment and way-finding. The concept behind our design was motivated by a docu-mentary, in which our client, an eccentric cryogenicist, is obsessed with the idea of living forever and cre-ating the perfect human. We took these ideas into consideration while in the design development phase of our project, focusing on creating a cool sterile atmosphere with touches alluding to a traditional past reinvented for our technological era. Tailoring the design for the rich, famous, and ridiculous, one of the main features of the building’s design was a rooftop helicopter pad, the preferred method of arrival for Apeiro’s clients. The heli-pad, to be made of structural glass, would funnel light down into the depths of the interior spaces. The lightwell stood to represent the near spiritual transformations happening within the building’s core, as well as organize the building’s circulation around a central space.

Designing the official Cadency Mark for Alpha Rho Chi architecture fra-ternity at Miami Univer-sity, I wanted to capture the essence of Alumni Hall. It was important to represent its solidity and tradition as one of Miami’s oldest buildings on campus. Using de-tails from the building’s architecture was my way of highlighting the experience. The door handles to the building, the rotunda dome, form the body of the graphic. The center shield is ac-tually a stain-glass detail atop the dome, which symbolizes the protec-tion and shelter we feel within Alumni Hall.

As an executive member of the Miami University Club of Fashion Design for 2 years, I’ve had the opportunity to design and re-design the clubs logo. In both designs, it was important that the graphic represent what we do, fashion. But more important than just creating clothes, as the dress logo mis-represents, we are edu-cators in the production of fashion. The second logo design attempts to add a sophistication, a tone, and a mark of brand to the icon. The evolution of the graphic also shows my growth and proficiency as a de-signer.

merch&isingBeing part of many different student organization executive boards, I’ve had many oppor-tunities to design and produce merchandise. These are some examples of my work that have been put into production. My work designing t-shirts and graphics has helped lead to my love of fashion and apparel design. It’s always important to me that each design conveys a different attitude about the club, whether it be fashion, for an event, or tradi-tional in nature. I learned through my experiences that the best designs are the ones that bridge gender and artistic differences of an organization’s members.

Designing a personal space for reflection and studying proved to be a project in proportion.Every detail of this long and narrow space reflects my body’s working proportions.

Keeping the hut “off the grid” meant that certaindaylighting, energy, and material decisions had to be made

in order to utilize local resources. Through harnessing the power of sunand water current, I was able to create a space that

functions for myself as well as the surrounding enviroment.

mobilegalleryThis project was a freelance design project for a professor and mentor of mine, Samantha Perkins. As part of her graphic design graduate thesis presentation, she retained me to 3D model, design, and produce rendering to support her graphics. The graphics were a traveling art gallery for a Wim Wenders film festival. The idea was to modify a truck bed to use as a pop-out suspension system for displaying Wim Wenders iconic photography. This design move was significant to create two spaces film goers could inhabit. The truck bed would be used as an information hub and moment of repose, and at ground level, photography would make a dramatic statement float-ing at eye level. Wenders’ art focuses on the deconstruction of the great American landscape; to highlight and display this concept, I imposed a natural wood ceiling suspended at vary-ing heights, between which, held lights mimicking the wood’s pattern. The fluidity of concept both in my design ideas and Wenders’ was another experience in branding a space to con-vey a specific feeling or atmosphere.

most open ended projects always seem to yield the most creative results, and my storefront project doesn’t disap-point. Developing a storefront design for any location, I choose one of the most fa-mous locations for retail storefront design, Soho New York. Instead of working with an existing company’s branding restrictions, I designed a new company, Piece.

I saw Piece as an opportunity to design a new luxury brand focused on the retail of high-end furniture. Using contemporary lines, and classic materials such as wood, brick, and steel, Piece took on a modern luxury attitude. Piece serves clientel some of the most iconic mid-century modern designs and contemporary trends in home decor.

photographyTraveling has become my number one source of inspiration and documenting my travels has become one of my favorite artistic outlets. Being able to travel for pro-fessional reasons to New York, San Francisco, Chicago, London, and Milan, has been some of the most rewarding experience of my life. Being able to capture that moment of awe when viewing something of architectural or cultural significance helps to make me feel connected to my destination and place. Photography has become a hobby of mine, and through my experience, the best way to achieve great images, is to be at the right place at the right time, and own Photoshop.

qlix viaWorking with Qlix Magazine as a street style photographer for their Qlix Via column was my first experience combining my love of fashion and photography. Encompassing the brands image of “emerging, fashion, found.” I sought to find people on the Chicago streets that I felt best represented the Qlix look.

Residential design today can lack inspiration and clear architectural presence. When designing my

house, it was important to me that there was a clear design intent and significance. Taking cues from mid-century modern,

Steven Holl, and from north-pacific style design, my “Haus of Synergy” reinterprets

the ideals of the new nuclear family. Centering the home’s living spaces

around the hearth, inhabitants would be drawn through the home by the

four elements. I organized the in-terior spaces of the home around

four main concrete elements, each with its own characteris-

tics to represent earth, wind, fire, and water. Developing

a design based around the four elements of

nature turned the hab-itable into a habitat.

macy’scompetition

2009 PAVE Interior Design Competition was to redesign the wom-en’s shoe department of Macy’s NYC flagship store. I wanted to re-brand the Macy’s shopping experience to target the more high-end market. Using vin-tage Hollywood as an inspiration, my design had many Art Deco influences. This modern mix of luxury and style created a space as iconic as those 1920’s silver screen actors.

Mixing modern with a vintage flare, I used conventional materials in un-conventional places. Columns made of mirror, the backings to the shoe’s shelving was made of alternating tufted velvet and backlight frosted glass with a tufted pattern. The design connected past and present to help give Macy’s shoes a trans-generational appeal; it was important that I give every woman that vintage red carpet experience.
