CAREER OBJECTIVECurrently I am studying at Melbourne University working to complete my Bachelor of Environments course (completion date; mid next year).It has been an inspiring experience that has opened my eyes to the myriad of complementary professions and fields that weave their way in and around the broad umbrella of architecture.

Having travelled to Germany on a scholarship to study in Stuttgart for six weeks I had the opportunity to broaden my understanding of Architecture exploring Germany and neighbouring European countries. I have developed a passionate desire to continue to study and work in the architecture field and thus endeavour to obtain my masters in architecture and a career in the field.

I also have a passion for sport, swimming in particular and have continued to train and teach swimming since my early schooling years. Swimming teaching is a profession that I hope to continue to be involved with as long as possible.

This sculpture was created in my final year of high school for my Studio Arts subject. All students in the class were encouraged to apply for their piece to be exhibited in the Top Arts exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria.

My work, comprised from chicken wire, copper wire and scrap metal was short listed and then chosen to be shown in the 2009 exhibition.

Inspired by an installation by Ricky Swallow and figures by Peter Corlette, I sought to draw the two sources together in my work. As I worked through the design processes a figure in repose sitting amongst everyday paraphernalia crystallised. I captured this concept in recycled old chicken wire I had collected. The dainty elegant female form evolved out of the typically masculine and rough medium, an unintentional juxtaposition occurring between the material and the subject.

The work encourages the viewer to speculate on the context and mood of the piece and create their own interpretation.

VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTSL A N T E R N D E S I G N

This design studio was focussed on encouraging students to develop a critical view on a natural phenomenon, develop that view via a myriad of creative and interrogative processes and then translate all that was learnt into the virtual world.

The use of the three dimensional modelling tools Rhinoceros and Grasshopper were the medium learnt to express my design intentions.

Driven by the growth and change of the pine cone I explored the variable nature of its development and then translated that via many different iterations into a lantern that would document the stages I found most important.

This design project taught me valuable skills in virtual modelling and has shown me how I can merge analogue practices such as sketching and model making with digital techniques to create hybrid outcomes.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

AALTO ANALYSIS - Main principles that informed this design.

This project was built around the interrogation of a “master architect” and their approach to architectural practice. What was learnt via this close study then needed to be translated into a boathouse sited on the Yarra - our studio were focussed on the buildings of Alvar Aalto the Finnish master. Hand drawing techniques and presentation methods were encouraged throughout this studio.

Aalto’s strong concern with the interplay of landscape and architecture, nature and artifice and the act of being outside or inside were the strongest themes that I wished to adhere to within the design of the boathouse.

Throughout the development of the design I tried to derive forms from the existing environment. The site also played a strong part in the placement of the built form and its role within the setting.

Aalto’s functionalist approach to building spaces has rationalised many of my ideas, encouraging the analysis of every part of the building. Additionally by executing the entire design by hand I became very intimately connected to this project and learnt a considerable amount about the power of hand drawing.

This design studio was based around creating a large scale design that would act as a installation over the freeway out to Geelong. It was a project undertaken in groups and was centered around the use of parametric design tools and thinking to develop an outcome.

“I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” - Pablo Picasso

It is apt to cite these quotes here because this project really pushed me to do things I could not do, learn things I had never considered and achieve a level of understanding that in no way I had conceived possible before.

I learnt from my peers, and was excited by this very different way of designing as it required a completely divergent approach to the media and thus resulted in outcomes that we had never expected to come to.

The dappled tree canopy, the scale of a car viewed sculpture, appreciation from more than one direction, and a dramatic transition from light to dark were the design drivers that lead to this de-constructed tunnel installation.
