TORKWEAR Reduce crew member fatalities on commercial fishing boats caused by prolonged exposure to freezing ocean waters

36x more deadly than the average American occupation

    Fall 201110 week group project

  • RESEARCH

    FRIGID OCEAN MACHO TRADITION

We researched the commercial fishermen culture and sent out surveys to understand their practices and habits.

of fatalities occur due to water exposure

of overboard fishermen without personal flotation devices survive

Although crucial for survival, fishermen rarely wear PFDs because they are too hot, bulky, and constrain movement, and damages their macho persona. Of those we interviewed, half rarely wear PFDs while the other half never do.

  • TESTING To develop the most effective flotation placement we conducted tests at the local pool that influenced design iteration and construction of final suit.

We tested a commercial fishing suit already on the market which was difficult to swim in and dragged the user down. Then we created our own Velcro suit to place flotation blocks in multiple locations. The new configuration kept the users head above water in a seated position to minimize panic and keep the victim as visible as possible.

  • From pool testing, we found it to be beneficial to keep the majority of the flotation as close to the body as possible, to lift the body and keep as much of it above the water as possible. From the survey information, we created a clothing dissection of items worn on the boat. The item that was a constant and made the most sense to integrate flotation was the bib pant, concentrating on the chest, upper and lower back, and the front of the legs. The flotation pads are tessellated to allow a greater range of motion since fishermen complained about bulky and obtrusive PFDs. Sewing samples were made to simulate flotation and understand the fabric. A mock up was first made to develop patterns then a full scale model was made.

DEVELOPMENT Aesthetics were developed and fabric tests were made while placing flotation in locations based on research

Aesthetic appearance took inspiration from swat gear for its masculinity and Nike combat gear for its range of motion. The bright green was chosen for visibility and when paired with black it gives a more manly appearance.

    FISHERMEN APPEAL

To make the TORKWEAR suit appealing to fishermen certain features were integrated to fit their lifestyle. Customization allows fichermen to proudly show their loyalty to their crew. From the fishermen we surveyed, we found out they carry a knife at all times so we designed a knife to be part of the suit making its utilitarian benefits appeal to fishermen. The adjustable hard hood replaces baseball caps that are used to keep water out of their faces. The adjustable belt and straps fit a range of body types and replaces the rope some use to keep the bib pant close to their body

  • Integrated heat packs in the vest are activated when overboard to raise water temperature in the suit. This small increase in temperature can double time for survival giving the boat time to turn around and rescue the overboard victim. The bi stable crystals packs are normally used by surgeons to sanitize equipment, an be easily removed, boiled to reactivate, and reinserted into the suit

FINAL DESIGN TORKWEAR increases chances of survival while still appealing to commercial fishermen

  • The suit looks GREAT... Diesel in fact! -Steve United Fishing Forum

  • RELIEF STOOLS Contains relief supplies for victims of natural disasters and then can be used as furniture.

Many relief supply kits give victims the necessities to survive but do not help them rebuild a sense of home. By giving furniture, families can begin to regain a sense of permanence

Final prototype of stools are made of poplar slats, steel bars, and nylon strapping. Relief supplies can be shipped within the crate then easily disassembled and used for seating.

  • A survey was completed by 11 individuals to understand their relaxation habits. Once finding out activities were centered around lounging, a separate study of 12 individuals was conducted to learn preferred lounging positions

Where do you collect your thoughts?

    Spring 20113 week project

Prompt: Private Places of Thought must have a minimal impression, and must be functional, useful and adapt to everyday living; they must put man with his need and own research of well-being.

  • Study models made out of wire and canvas were used along side sketches to develop a form that accommodates the users sitting position of choice.

Final design allows user to sit and lie down. While clean simple lines kept a minimal and relaxing appearance.

  • SLATE2 Increase primary school completion rates by increasing interest through group learning and interaction thus making learning relevant and fun.

    Fall 201010 week group project

of children in Mozambique graduate from the 12th grade1.5% In June 2010, the INDEX Organization released their annual design challenge focused on designing for education. Our group

chose the category based on facilities, specifically in Sub-Saharan Africa due to poor education completion rates.

  • DEVELOPMENT We explored ways to encourage group participation through a slate and furniture system.

Early concepts focused on the idea of a single slate per student but then could be incorporated into the furniture unit for group work. This circle table had a rotational center slate for all to use.

Modular desks allowed for different sized groups

Potential classroom layout made students feel part of a group

  • Slate2 can be used individually or shared

Desk works with or without the slate for different activities

The blackboard was chosen as the focus because of its popular use while simplification of form led to a dual rectangular slate with color for customization.

  • A trip to the local elementary showed the range in furniture sizes for the age group. We focused on accommodating the size range of the children.

HUMAN FACTORS Research was conducted to accommodate reach and leg length for a range of children.

  • This led to the refinement of the furniture piece that could be used in individual or group activities.

  • FINAL DESIGN Slate2 is a slate and desk system where both encourage group work making school fun and relevant

A prototype was made to test feasibility and scale. The desk and slate were made from poplar and steel tubing but can be made from local wood.

  • Double sided slate allows two children to work together with or without the desk

Handle in seat allows for easy rearranging into groups

Slate can be taken home to be shared with siblings

Bar accommodates range of children sizes so that all are comfortable

  • LAYERS Layers began as an exploration of felt and its properties then developed into an iPad bag for men and women using felts unique characteristics.

EXPLOREA love of textiles and style inspired my thesis.

Research gave basic knowledge but physical tests gave a better understanding of the material.

What makes your favorite bag special?

    aesthetics memories function travel

Once I decided to focus on bags, I sent a survey and received 20 responses. It showed that men and women carried the same basic everyday essentials. Then when it came to bags, they valued a range of characteristics but both valued function.

    What do you carry everyday?

    women men

DEVELOPMENT A survey helped give focus to form development while further tests helped the ideation process.

  • men

Initial concepts and test models explored different ways to contain items. I picked the concept which highlighted felts properties and used it in a way other textiles could not. Cut felt does not need to be hemmed allowing constructing by layers.

  • LAYERS

  • The final iPad bag is simple and functional while still maintaining character. It can be used by men and women and holds the basic everyday essentials. This 8.5 x 12 in version contains an iPad, iPhone, credit cards, and a few other items like chapstick or headphones.

FINAL DESIGN Bag is made from layers that are held together with metal posts which can easily be translated to a product line.
