The objective of these assignments was to develop graphic techniques to represent ground surfaces, both natu-ral and man-made. We then applied these techniques to a site plan.

Drawing From PhotographsIn this assignment we were re-quired to select an urban street scene and take a series of photo-graphs to create a panoramic.

We then prepared representational renderings from the com-posite photo series. In this part of the assignment we assumed the role of the urban designer. Through alterations of the original photograph, we proposed recommendations to im-prove the buildings and streetscape.

Site-Section Elevation

Plan Elevation Elements

The first part of this assignment introduced us to drawing man-made and natural site elements to scale in elevation format. The second part taught us how to construct a site-section elevation from the plan on the left. It was prepared with pencil and marker on trace paper.

For our final poster project we were required to take some of the drawings originally rendered in black and white and add color. The media used included markers, colored pencils, pens, and pastels.

The objective of thisassignment was to become familiar with basic principles involved in the construction of one and two-point perspec-tives. We were required to select an urban environment and render it with pencil and pens. We then added color for our final posterassignment.

Cincinnati Neighborhood Analysis

Northside

In this studio we worked in two person teams on a single neighborhood. My partner and I analyzed and developed posters on the Historical, Physical, and Social conditions of the Neighborhood of Northside. We then picked a section of the business district to develop a Problem/Solu-tion Analysis poster. Prior to the actual project to come, our proposal was to renovate and repurpose the Historic American Can Factory building and the immediate surrounding area.

P L A N N I N G D E S I G N S T U D I O : Neighborhood/District

The theme of this studio was Claiming & Reuse of Residual Spaces in the Contemporary City. My team chose a focus area surrounding the intersection of Vine Street and West Clifton Avenue in Cincinnati (pictured to the left). We analyzed the district’s current building conditions, land use, zoning, occupancy, natural systems, population characteristics, infrastructure, and circulation. We then conducted a SWOT analysis and reviewed case studies with similar characteristics.

Following the analysis and research stage, we developed a program for the district to create a strategy and site specific designs for inter-

Claiming & Reuse of Residual Spaces

vention areas within the district. The intervention area I focused on for the final proposal was a site plan for reclaiming a previous residential area for a neighborhood park (pictured to the left). This

Building Conditions

design incorporates the site’s extreme topography, requiring the demolition of a few remaining, quite neglected properties (map pictured to the right). Also included was an area for apartment, condo, or public amenities such as tennis courts and a pool, connecting the park area with a proposed mixed-use development on an adjacent intervention area within the district.

This interdisciplinary studio included both Planners and Engineers. The focus area was a region within the City of Covington, Kentucky. In the research phase, teams documented and analyzed aspects of the natural and man-made environment, while some were assigned neighborhoods of Covington. These graphics were created with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for a poster presentation on an initial Community Framework Analysis and Synthesis. A partner and I were assigned to document and analyze Covington’s Historic Licking Riverside neighborhood to uncover the community framework that supports its livability.

Many of the homes ofHLR are beautifully maintained and boast well kept private gardens. The neighborhood takes pride in its historic heritage, a defining element of the neigh-borhood’s character.

PUBLIC GARDENS

Public community space includes George Rogers Clark Park to the North, and Randolph Park to the South. George Rogers Clark park is a well kept scenic park along the Ohio River. Randolph Park is not as well kept, but includes a baseball diamond and a playground.

HLR has very few niches. Everyday essentials such as a grocery, coffee shop, hardware store and pharmacy are important for community vibrance, livability, and everyday social interaction.- Roebling Point Book Store- Post Office- Bar Restaurants

Concluding Thoughts

The method and analytical framework required to approach this assignment borrowed the ap-proach of William Morrish and Catherine Brown as described in Planning To Stay. This framework consists of five types of physi-cal features found in neighborhoods (Homes & Gardens, Community Streets, Neighbor-hood Niches, Anchoring Institutions, and Public Gardens) and five organizing themes (Location, Scale, Mix, Time, & Movement). We document-ed and discussed these features by means of simple graphics for a final poster assignment.

Note: Topography shown on this map was derived from 2004 LiDAR data developed for the FEMA SF Bay Coastal Study. Raw .LAS  les were downloaded from the USGS LiDAR web portal. The raw data points were minimally post processed within the study area boundary to remove trees, buildings and other extraneous features. LiDAR point features covering areas with low lying vegetation (grasses, bushes) were not modi ed in any way. Areas outside of the study area were also left as is.

The Planning Center | DC&E is commissioned to produce an updated master list, map, and detailed description of each trail within LA County. One of the ways this information is to be provided to the public is by means of a new trails website that is also smart phone friendly. Working with the project manager, I produced the graphic mock-ups that pair with the functionality report and tables. Starting with basic wire frame layouts of each web and mobile page, the second phase included color mock-ups of the pages, pictured here. Graphics and documents created in Illustrator & Photoshop.

One of my focus projects throughout this internship was to support research for a sustainable business model for the post grant future of Find-lay Market Farms, an extension of the non-profit farmers market. At the end of my internship my boss, the Urban Farm Manager, utilized this and his own research to make his final recommendations for a business model proposal. I began the project by independently

researching Urban Farm programs, and compiling a list of non and for profits with helpful information. The Farm Man-ager and I then created a project to manage a group of UC student volunteers for further research. After our introductory meeting with the students, I acted as project manager, tak-ing complete responsibility for supporting the students’ work to completion. I provided them with an extensive example via Somerton Tanks Farms (the top section in the spread to the left), and created a case study form for capturing and analyzing the information they gathered. Once they pro-vided me with their results, I compiled and organized the research data into both a master document and spread sheet. I presented the information by ordering the existing urban farm business models from most to least useful.

the apprentice farmers. I made these logo options for a grower in the Findlay Market Farms program in Adobe Illustrator. Along with designing and making a variety of laminated display signs for multiple farm teams to use in selling their produce, I helped create a system for the apprentices’ to track their produce, pricing, and market sales.

Apprentice Farmer Marketing and Selling Support Another project I worked on was developing a framework for farmers market selling for

Gamble Montessori High School Volunteer WorkdayA group of Gamble High school students volunteered their time for a workday with the apprentice farmers at the Elm and Liberty Street garden site. I made these project fliers to communicate the work day goals and organize the efforts of the team leaders and their students. Other projects included hoop house construction and fence maintenance. I served as the team leader for the weeding group.

Findlay Market Farms Volunteer ManagementBuilding off the work of a previous UC intern, I helped create a Volunteer Management System to support the Urban Farm Project and apprentice farmers in the growing and selling of their produce. I created a volunteer managment e-mail account for FMFarms, ammended and made new volunteer application forms, and worked with other volun-teers to think through a centralized database system for future volunteer workday events.
