Chatham University | Master’s ThesisA well-designed campus environment projects more than just a school image.Through methods of focus groups, interviews, questionnaires, site analysis, and charettes a campus design developed providing pedestrian friendly elements. Participants included members of The Kiski School administration, staff, and students as well as landscape designers, landscape architects, and civil engineers. Some of the initial objectives included: to evaluate the placement of roads; to enhance open green space, enhance signage and wayfinding; to evaluate the parking issues; and to create a site palette for landscape design guidelines.

The Uniontown HospitalUniontown, Pennsylvania

Burt HillWorking with the Burt Hill Healthcare Team, I typically would design a courtyard gardens as well as parking layouts. This was no different for the TUH project. Throughout the design development phase, I created the planting layout for the courtyard design and specified the plant materials.

In addition to the original design objective, Burt Hill was hired to conduct a parking study for the hospital. This was my first solo project. The study provided a framework that ensures adequate parking for the hospital into the future. TUH considered its current number of parking spaces as the minimum and neededv the study to show ways to obtain a net gain. Acquiring lease lots, satellite parking acquisition as well as a parking deck were all taken into consideration.

ASSESSMENT OF OPTIONS

PARKING OPTION B

Parking Option B extends west to east along Delaware Street from Lot 6E to the property between Lot 3E and Lot 4E, and continues south to the FCHA Property. It is presumed that acquiring a portion of the FCHA property, the hospital would in return forfeit occupancy of Lots 4E and 5E.

Parking Option B is divided into sections due to the size and the current land uses. The total of all the option provides approximately 966 spaces. Option B-1 includes a portion of the Patients & Visitors Lot, as well as a Physicians Only Lot, Lot 3E, and the property between Lot 3E and Lot 4E. B-2 consists of the remaining parts of the Patients & Visitors Lot and Lot 2 E. Option B-3 includes Lot 1E and the properties between Lot 1E and Lot 2E. Option B-4 is the FCHA property. Some of the FCHA property includes Lot 11E, Lot 10E, and Lot 9.

Burt HillBurt Hill was commissioned by the University of Dayton to conduct a master plan after the university acquired 49 acres adjacent to the campus. I had the opportunity to participate in the planning process as well as print publications of the Master Plan and the Landscape Guidelines.

Burt HillSnow Waters was an exisitng Burt Hill project when I was approached to contribute a visual spin on stormwater details. The goal was to transition the project from the CD phase to be ready for a publication submission due to the innovative BMPs used throughout the design.

I rendered the large master plan, individual areas of interest and construction details. An interactive pdf was made linking the master plan to the areas of interest and the details that coordinated with those areas.

Trees:

Bloomfield Urban ThicketPittsburgh, Pennsylvania

pomme de terreThe idea for the Bloomfield Bridge Greenspace was to create a transitional habitat, by name, an Urban Thicket. These areas will act as a gateway for multiple species as well as the Bloomfield community.

The idea of Urban Thicket design modeled the Ecological Succession of Habitat. The process of succession occurs when plant species are introduced in a manner that creates diversity and transitional habitats. This space works as a primary succession that includes both meadow and thicket plants.

Point Breeze ResidencePittsburgh, Pennsylvania

pomme de terreThis Point Breeze client wanted to transform her typical urban backyard into a formal garden oasis. The concept for the space began by embracing a classical French influenced landscape that utilizes such features as crisp structural lines, symmetry, various paving textures, a prominent focal point and the creation of outdoor rooms.

The garden was divided into two spaces, the entertaining room and the formal garden. The entertaining space has a herringbone area rug with adequate room for large dining as well as a seat wall.

In the garden, boxwoods line the planting beds while flowers bloom within its low green borders all summer long.
