Railey Chapel on OBU Campus, Shawnee, OK

Dale, a small town outside of Shawnee, OK, is where I grew up. The rural town is where I developed a curiosity for architecture. I would sneek architecture-related magazines to flip through and wish I could make something like what I saw on those pages. Using a natrual ability to draw, I would sketch neighborhood houses or floorplans to understand the spaces within the homes. That is where I began to want to become an architect.

I studied two years at Seminole State College in Seminole, OK before moving on to Oklahoma State University. After 4 1/2 years at OSU, I earned a Bachelor ’s Degree in Architecture. My time spent in the study of architecture nutured the desire I had since I was a child to pursue architecture. Through study, I found appreciation for different design aesthetics and architecture history.

Majority of the projects I have worked on and were most successful were drawn from a concept, which is the way I am most comfortable working. I believe projects should have a strong vision be-hind the design. A vision is what helps me remain excited about a project.

Sketching is a passion of mine and it is something I often utilize to develop a concept. Although the computer programs are vital to completing a project, ideas conveyed through hand drawings are important as well.

The computer programs I have had experience with include: AutoCAD Google Sketchup Rhino Photoshop 3dsMax InDesign Revit PowerPoint

Tulsa Boutique:

Project: Design of a boutique hotel in downtown Tulsa Requirements: 50 Guest Rooms Retail Restaurant Amenities

Design: The facade of the existing building on the site was a requirement to keep, whether incorporated into the design or not. The ground level of the existing facade has a sea-green veneer and a sandstone veneer is on the second floor.

While visiting the site, I imagined the green stone flowing and disintegrating into the rest of the design. This was a major influence on the exterior ’s design.

The hotel’s first couple floors fill the site, but the upper floors have an “L”-shape plan, which allows more light into the back side. The hotel lobby is located on the corner, flanked by a few boutiques. The restaurant is accessible through the hotel lobby and the exisiting facade.

Proportions and materials on the boutiques are drawn from the exisiting facade on the site. Sea green glass panels cover most of the first floor, but start to disintegrate with every floor.. The panels slide on each balcony, allow-ing guests to interact with the architecture.

Project: Design a spa on a lake side for people to visit and relax in the Witchia Mountains. Requirements: Message Therapy Rooms Aquatherapy Rooms Saunas and Turkish Baths Indoor Pool Heated Pool, connected to outdoor poor usuable all seasons Scented Pools Rest Areas Offices

Design: The site is on a slope of about 45 degrees with a lake at the base. Instead of building on the land, I chose to build into it. Originally, the concept was inspired by a cave, but through development, the idea was relaxed, but the design remained mostly underground.

Entry is directly from the parking lot, which is off the road. The offices and dressing rooms are adjacent to the entry. Beyond the dressing rooms is access to the rest of the spa.

Ernst Cramer ’s Poet’s Garden gave some inspiration for skylights in the design of the spa. However, the amount of skylights weren’t known, so a few studies were done to determine if skylights were the best option for the design.

A few ideas were studies for the use of the pyramids on the spa’s roof. An idea was to use one for an entrance or have a couple entrances. Perhaps people could walk on the pyramids.

After doing a few studies and more development with the plans of the spa, skylights were determined to be the best option inspired by Cramer ’s Poet’s Garden.

The interior of the spa mostly consists of intimate spaces, but the most public spaces are the indoor pool and the heated pool that extends to the outdoor pool.

The outdoor pool is flanked by places to relax and a rest area. Privacy can be maintained at the outdoor pool, but the pool can be viewed from the roof of the spa. People on the roof can also view the lake like the people enjoying the heated pool.

Smaller and more intimate pools with varying scents and temperatures are set next to the heated and indoor pool. They have separate entrances, none of them facing a space with which can bring distraction. The smaller pools are each designed within walls of stone for privacy.

American University of Paris

Project: Design a small campus in Paris for the American University. Requirements: Classrooms AUP Offices Cafeteria Library Bookstore Basketball Court

Design: Beginning this project, I started with a small model based on different volumes for the different requirements. All the volumes took rectilinear forms and built up instead of covering the campus.

When the square footages were developed for each of the departments, the form morphed to accommodate the spaces while maintaining the idea from the model.

The required spaces are represented by planes and lines, which show closed and open spaces. Each required space of the campus corresponds to a color and volume.

The way the buildings form on the site allows for a small park for the campus, giving outdoor space for pedestrians in an urban and dense part of Paris.

Small Park

The library became the focus and forefront facing the riverside and was lifted from ground level.

A student lounge is adjacent to the library ’s entrance. The lounge faces north toward the Seine River.

A loggia is created by the protruding upper levels of the library, making another gathering space for students or pedestrians.

A small court is surrounded by the classroom building, the office building, and a walkway covered by the basketball court. This is still connected to other part of the campus by another walkway.

Concept: Lungs of the City

During research, I found the parks and gardens of Paris, which act as “lungs” for the city.

The “lungs” concept is conveyed through the small park on the campus, but is also used as placement for the windows on the library.

The Seine River is just north of the library, giving a great view to students studying in the lifted space. A curtainwall clads the north wall of the library, allowing in natural sun-light and maximum view of the river and city.

The library starts on the second floor with computers available for students and study rooms. A small room for reserved books is also located on the second floor.

A reception desk welcomes people to the third floor where stacks and a reading area are located.

The reading area has seating for study groups or seating for students who need their own space.

More stacks and some more seating is also available on the fourth floor. The seating looks over the third floor with a great view of the Seine River.

Homeless Assistance Center

Project: Design an extended stay assistance center for homeless families near downtown Oklahoma City. Requirements: 50 Residential Apartments Community Dining Community Center Self-supporting Clinic

Design: The center ’s mission to help families impacted my view on the project. I believed the project was to cre-ate a place centered on feeling safe enough to work on healing. The idea leading the design was “embracing arms.”

The “embracing arms” derive from one arm opening to Oklahoma City ’s downtown and the other arm, which is the clinic, acts as an extension from location of the OU Medical Center.

A few studies to determine structure and HVAC exposure for the community dining room were done by overlay.

Eventually, truss structure for the exterior was chosen along with unexposed ducts. The trusses conveyed the concept of openness while concealed ducts made the space feel finished. However, through development, the duct system was moved to the floor.

The “heart” is an outdoor space, but it is a place to focus on healing. Everyone has to pass through the “heart” to get from and to the dining room or apartments.

Residential units are stacked over four floors, but all look out over the “heart” of the center. The dining also looks out into the “heart.”

This project required a phase for construction documents. The CD’s were drawn for the focus space. One of the drawings had to be through a wall with detail in the main space.

The upper portion of the wall is clad in rusted steel, where the lower wall is structural glass. The light shelf is clad with the rusted steel as well, extending to ensure the structure above can be highlighted.

The green roof angles, creating a cone with the base leading to a gutter system beneath.

Surrounding the dining area is the rest of the community center, which includes a gym, a daycare, and small library. These spaces radiate from the dining space.

The daycare and library are located on the second floor. A view to the green roof above the dining area and to the outdoor space is accessible from the second floor.

The outdoor space is the “heart” of the center, a place of safety. People need places to feel secure to be real with others and to work on healing and growing.

The residential housing, clinic, and center enclose and embrace this space to reinforce the feeling of security.

Different materials are used for residential living, dining, community center, and clinic.

The community dining space became a strong focus in the project. The room is round in plan and much of the wall is structural glass, giving maximum view outdoors. A radial pattern is created in the concrete floor. Rusted steel is used around room with a light shelf, highlighting the truss system. The ceiling tapers up to a frosted skylight and compression ring.

Muelle Panamericano

Project: Design a master plan for a cruise terminal, water taxi, panoramic elevator, and an aquarium in Santurce, across from Old San Juan. Requirements: Panoramic Elevator at least 215ft Aquarium Cruise Terminal, dock for 2 large ships Water Taxi, dock for 4 taxis

Design: The master plan was designed with four people. The design started with the focus directed to Old San Juan. Then elements of the design were taken from the natural form of the coast on the site.

Later in the project, the group was split and Brian Miller and I designed the cruise terminal and water taxi terminal. The design took advantage of the climate of San Juan and maximized the amount of windows, especially on the south side facing a park. People going to and from the water taxi will keep the park busy with people, so it is not idle.

The original idea was kept and modified in form for all the spaces required.

An idea was to make two docks for the ships, but was later discarded.

Several studies were done for the master plan of Muelle Panamericano. The group decided that the panoramic elevator would be angled, instead of being completely vertical. The elevator would have focus on Old San Juan. The cruise terminal needed to hug the coast for space for two ships, if not more. Since the water taxi needed to be independent, it is set on the smaller part of the site with access to the water.

Each member in the group started the project together by making multiple concept models.

Every space is denoted by colors and is cut by a plane signifying the ground plane.

After the master planning was complete, the group of four split into groups of two, with one group taking the cruise terminal and water taxi while the other group designed the panoramic elevator and aquarium.

Brian Miller and I designed the cruise terminal. We started with models for this phase of the project.

The end resulted with the terminal and water taxi having a hinge in the plans, relating to each other. The aquarium adopted the form into the design as well. The elevator was angled to the same degree to focus between the terminal and water taxi.

I have always enjoyed drawing. I began drawing at a young age when my dad would try to occupy me so he could watch his football games on the television.

During 5th grade I developed interest in architecture, when I didn’t even know what architecture really was. Soon, I started drawing floor plans for schools I’d make up or houses.

I knew early in high school what I wanted to do with my life, even though I didn’t know the steps to take. I took a few art classes in high school and was strongly encouraged by the positive feedback I received.

After a couple years at OSU, I started sketching when traveling. I appreciate my sketches more than the pictures I take with a camera.
