Museum of Steel

Located along the Delaware River in Pittsburgh, PA, the abandoned factory is in disrepair. Four chimneys on the building symbolize a once rapidly expanding steel industry. One can almost imagine the multitudes of ships coming and going that once serviced the world Now it seems almost like a body without a soul, ending its duty,, and watching the next genera-tion of growth from the opposite side of the river. The intention for this project is to design elements within the rhombic grid taken from the existing site to highlight and facilitate an appreciation of the abandoned factory. Two exhibition spaces are provided for large-scale presentations including sculptures, cars and a variety of industrial designs. Moveable rectangular boxes are also provided for smaller scale presentations allowing users to modify the space according to their needs.

There is a bridge in the deep forest, which has been loved by the people in Blacksburg for a long time. The timber structured bridge looks as though it has been used by the village for decades, and is approaching its end. The bridge has almost become a part of the surrounding nature. The museum of nature is a facility which respects and delights in the existence of the natural world. The combined layers of elements create a museum through their continuity in much the same way as a bamboo forest creates its whole with gathered elements of simple sticks.

Framed views in the museum penetrate the combined layers and focus on the bridge to highlight its existence.

The spreading sky, the blazing sun, and the heart-healing trees of mother nature. Imagine an educational environment that can be freely transported to any desired site, while maintaining its structural integrity and absorbing the surrounding nature as a whole.Financial and spatial restrictions in California have lead to a shortage of classrooms. I see this as an opportunity to create a moving classroom.. The structure will be constructed using light gauge steel allowing it to be moved via truck. This will also curb both material and labor costs. The surrounding bookshelves have multiple functions. Besides storing literature, they can also be transformed into desks and offer additional storage space. Light colored shelves will avoid direct sunlight, but will reflect the incoming light. They will also provide warm illumination throughout the classroom.

To live. The importance of living has been forgotten as technology evolves. Were we not born to offer some kind of knowledge to this world? Or were we born to feel the sun, stand firmly on the ground and end our life between calm and passion? The style of living changes as time goes by as well as the sence of people. To die. Isn’t it true that our thinking and beliefs towards dieing have been shallow as compared to those of our past? Perhaps, we are losing our time and place. There is a question which we all may have, despite religious, cultural, and racial differences. What is the world of death?I assumed it to be the world of nothing. In the space, you will feel the meaning of the death and warmth of the life by not being before.

In Tokyo, the world’s largest city, high rise buildings compete with one another to be seen. While advances in technol-ogy allow us to construct these giant marvels, we find the world around us crumbling. Today a blanket of smog suffocates this great city, and hides the blue of the sky.

I propose the idea that all the buildings in Tokyo embrace the sky through the use of passive cooling rooftop water pools, thus reflecting the sky instead of blocking it out.

Project FireFly

In daylight, transportation is tied to the changing scale of surroundings by the speed at which one travels. When the light of day weakens, a different manifestation of a similar scale change occurs with illumination around a source of light. The Washington Monument and other buildings along the National Mall not only illuminate themselves and the sky, but also their surroundings as they link together to increase awareness of their own and the city’s existence.

On a more human scale, Firefly provides quiet illumination of itself and the area in close proximity. The egg-shaped monuments of decreasing size lead away from the water taxi station and towards the city and utilize light to evoke a realization of the changing scale light has. As the bright light becomes less and less, passengers become aware of the difference in scale of transportation that is no longer present at night.

As the bright light becomes less and less, passengers become aware of the difference in scale of transportation that is no longer present at night.

Additionally, each passenger is presented with a small pendant that provides just enough light to brighten the passenger and his or her immediate surroundings. As they walk away from the station, the amount of illumination from the eggs decrease, and they are eventually left with only their pendant as it become their own personal firefly.

As the passengers move from water taxi to National Mall, they slowly become lost except for their immediate surroundings as the size of the city overtakes them. When they finally reach the monuments, they are completely consumed by the light and understand the city as a whole.

Thesis in progress

Sky, Ground, and Water. We feel them, and they make our world livable. Sky illuminates our existence, ground carries our existence, and water sustains our existence -- each relating to us differently. We as humans, however, feel the different peaces of nature, and fuses them as one. This thesis intends to provide a space in which nature fuses as one. The grid is set from each entrance and the edges of the site, which enhances the site’s usability and functionality. Conditions of height, slope and gaps will provide each visitor with an appreciation of nature.v
