DESIGN IS A SOLUTION TO AN EXISTING PROBLEM; AN ANSWER TO A QUESTION, PAST, PRESENT, OR FUTURE. DESIGNED OBJECTS AND SPACES NEED BE FUNCTIONAL ABOVE ALL ELSE. THE INHERENT BEAUTY OF THESE SOLUTIONS, WHEN EXECUTED PROPERLY, WILL FAR SURPASS THAT OF ANY AMOUNT OF APPLIED ORNAMENTATION.

THE DESIGN PROBLEM WAS TO CREATE AN INTERESTING STRUCTURE AS A SCULPTURAL INSTALLATION FOR THE PUBLIC TO INTERACT WITH. I CREATED A MONOLITHIC BUILDING WITH LITTLE MORE THAN A SMALL STAIRWAY VISIBLE ON THE OUTSIDE. THE DESIGN IS STRICTLY SYMMETRICAL, AND THE INTERACTION IS A MEANDERING PROCESSION EVENTUALLY LEADING TO THE CORE OF THE STRUCTURE. ALSO AN EXERCISE IN THE VERTICAL INVERSION OF HIERARCHY, WITH THE MOST IMPORTANT SPACE BEING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STRUCTURE. HERE A LARGE COLUMN DISAPPEARS INTO THE CEILING, THE AREA AROUND IT FLOODED BY NATURAL LIGHT FROM ABOVE.

PUBLIC INSTALLATION.
THIS PORTION OF THE PROJECT INVOLVED THE EXPLORATION OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS THAT COULD BE USED TO CONSTRUCT THE PUBLIC INSTALLATION PIECE. I USED CONCRETE AND MAHOGANY IN THE VERSION PICTURED ON THIS PAGE, AND EMPHASIzED THE WEIGHT OF EACH MATERIAL. THE CONCRETE PORTION IS FIRMLY GROUNDED AND MONUMENTAL IN SIzE, WHILE THE MAHOGANY IS BOTH SUSPENDED OFF OF THE GROUND AS WELL AS SLATTED TO LIGHTEN ITS IMPACT VISUALLY.
MATERIAL EXPLORATION.
FOR THIS ITERATION OF THE PROJECT I USED METAL AND GLASS. I USED THE MATERIALS IN A WAY THAT WAS CONTRARY TO THEIR PERCEIVED FUNCTIONS. THE HEAVY METAL WALL APPEARS TO BE SUSPENDED IN THE AIR, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME SUPPORTING A SET OF CANTILEVERED STAIRS. THE WALkING SURFACES ARE ALL CONSTRUCTED OF GLASS, CAUSING THE VIEWER TO EVEN FURTHER QUESTION THE STRUCTURE’S STABILITY.

THIS PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN AND BUILD A LIGHTING FIXTURE IN THE STYLE OF A CHOSEN DESIGNER. I CHOSE PHILIPPE STARCk, SPECIFICALLY FOCUSING ON HIS WORk FOR GERMAN PLUMBING MANUFACTURER HANSGROHE. I INCORPORATED ACTUAL COMPONENTS OF HIS DESIGNS FOR THE FIRM INTO MY FINISHED PRODUCT.

SMALL CONFERENCE.
RECEPTION AREA.
THROUGH THE USE OF FORCED PERSPECTIVE, VARIOUS FOCAL POINTS ARE EMPHASIzED IN THE GALLERY SPACES. THIS IS ACHIEVED BY PLACING WALLS AND OTHER ARCHITECTURAL
ELEMENTS AT SLIGHT ANGLES, DIRECTING THE VIEWER’S EYE TOWARDS THE SUPPOSED INTERSECTION OF THE INFERRED PLANES. THE CONCEPT IS CARRIED FURTHER BY
THE LIGHTING, WHICH IS CONFIGURED TO FOLLOW THESE SAME LINES OF SIGHT THROUGHOUT THE GALLERY SPACE. WHILE THE GALLERY CAN FUNCTION
IN AN ARRANGEMENT THAT HEAVILY EMPHASIzES THIS CONCEPT, IT IS AT THE SAME TIME A VERY VERSATILE SPACE WHICH CAN
EASILY BE RECONFIGURED TO ACCOMMODATE A VARIETY OF EXHIBITS AND/OR INSTALLATIONS. THE
COMPONENTS CHOSEN FOR THE PROJECT BOTH LEND TO THE HEALTH OF THE SPACE’S
OCCUPANTS, AND RELIED VERY LITTLE ON VIRGIN MATERIALS IN THEIR SELECTIONS. ALL FLOORING IS EITHER RECYCLED OR RECLAIMED, AND ALL FURNISHINGS AND FINISHES HAVE LOW OR NO V.O.C.S AND ARE MEASURABLY SUSTAINABLE IN THEIR MANUFACTURE. THE SPACE ITSELF IS ALSO DESIGNED TO HAVE A MINIMAL IMPACT, WITH MOST SPACES CONSTRUCTED SO THAT THEY MIGHT BE DISASSEMBLED WITH MINIMAL EFFORT, AND THE REMAINING SPACE REQUIRING LITTLE EFFORT TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PROSPECTIVE TENANTS.
