The Jackson’s weekend home on Decator Is land was des igned

and bu i l t by Rober t Hu l l in the 1980s. The Jacksons approached

Mi l le r |Hu l l about adding a guest bedroom and basement workshop

as they began spending more t ime there. The c l ients des i red to

main ta in the formal and mater ia l pa le t tes o f the or ig ina l home, which led to the addi t ion ’s s imple lean- to approach. A longs ide Mr . Hul l , I met w i th the c l ients to d iscuss the i r needs, des i res and res t r ic t ions for the addi t ion and then independent ly assembled a permi t package for San Juan County . The pro ject fami l ia r ized me wi th the cha l lenges o f is land const ruct ion and the permi t process.

The new communi ty center for the Metropol i tan Park Dis t r ic t o f

Tacoma inc ludes programs such as a concer t ha l l , f i tness room,

dance s tud io , mul t i -purpose room, communi ty /cater ing k i tchen,

and ch i ldwatch/ rentable par ty room in each o f the nest ing boxes

that make up the bu i ld ing ’s form. A large lobby, which was conceived as a communi ty l i v ing room, connects a l l o f the center ’s programs. As a member o f the pro ject team, I rendered two in ter ior v iews sketched by Rober t Hu l l . These render ings were cr i t ica l in convey ing the qual i ty and fee l o f the “ l iv ing room” space to the c l ient . Severa l i te ra t ions were made in order for the des ign team and c l ient to choose the most f i t t ing in ter ior mater ia ls and co lors . My las t des ign s tud io explored creat ing e f fects wi th concrete

c ladding. Af ter exper iment ing wi th pat terns and var ious cast ing

techniques, I deve loped a concrete c ladding un i t that u t i l i zes

low cost CMU cast ing technology for an e f f ic ient bu i ld ing screen

system. Us ing s tandard runn ing bond cours ing and s tee l cable for tens i le s t ructure , the un i t can be mi r rored and f l ipped to vary pat tern wi th in the screen and add exper ient ia l in terest to a bu i ld ing façade. I deve loped the aggregated un i t fu r ther for an ar t is t - in - res idence s tud io and exh ib i t ion space. The screen works to gradate l ight and v iews as wel l as es tab l ish human sca le in the indust r ia l env i ronment o f East Aust in . In addi t ion to the screen, o ther wal l and roof sur faces throughout the bu i ld ing are des igned to media te l ight for each o f the vary ing programs.

Sprawl and urban gent r i f ica t ion are s imul taneous ly occurr ing in

Aust in . Modeled a f ter the A l ley F la t In i t ia t ive for Cent ra l East

Aust in , I proposed mandat ing dens i f icat ion in Aust in ’s mature ne ighborhoods, such as Hyde Park , to reduce the need to expand in f ras t ructure o therwise requi red by sprawl and mi t igate the burdens o f gent r i f ica t ion by creat ing a f inanc ia l ly susta inable a f fordable hous ing mechanism. A l ley f la ts would not on ly create an income s t ream for proper ty owners , thereby making the i r proper ty more a f fordable , but would a lso increase the supply o f a f fordable renta l proper ty for the c i ty ’s ever -growing popula t ion. Sound Bui ld ing is a un ique des ign s tud io that

a UTSOA student must pass before acceptance

to the advanced des ign ser ies . The s tud io is

combined wi th const ruct ion and env i ronmenta l

cont ro ls courses to work toward a fu l ly in tegrated des ign.

My des ign so lu t ion in tegrates the bu i ld ing in to the s i te through a success ion o f double-wythe rammed ear th wal ls , whose mater ia l i ty u t i l i zes the reg ion ’s sandy so i l in a form that re i tera tes the exper ience o f the s i te as a repet i t ion o f v ineyard rows. The wal ls serve not on ly as the pr imary s t ructura l sys tem of the bu i ld ing, but fur thermore as an env i ronmenta l cont ro l sys tem which main ta ins temperature and humid i ty leve ls conducive for the winemaking process.

The des ign features an in-s lab rad iant

condi t ion ing system which takes advantage of

constant 70 degree groundwater temperatures,

a ra inwater co l lect ion system, a wastewater

sys tem for grey water appl icat ions, and a so lar energy co l lect ion system. These combine in to an indust r ia l bu i ld ing that is se l f -su f f ic ient and susta inable even in i ts rura l context .
