EAST VILLAGE RESIDENCE New York, NY with GW Architects

Renovation of an 4-story East Village carriage house. The new owners hoped to recreate a Mediterranean style villa in this secluded structure. The third floor was restructured to accommodate the master suite and future childs room, while the first floor was planned around creating a comfortable home office for the couple who are a lawyer and internet start-up owner.

GW Architects is currently involved in renovating the interior of this Chinatown church and community center. Pleased with the offices work so far, the fellowship asked GW to propose several schemes to intervene on the building facade - radically redefining OCMs presence in the neighborhood and com-munity. FIRE ISLAND RESIDENCE Saltaire, NY with GW Architects

Situated on the largest plot of land on Fire Island, the owners of this house demolished the exist-ing structure to build their new home. Currently under construction, the unfinished house survived the hurricane and is now on track to be complete for the summer season. Various 3D visualizations were created to help the client envision their new home.

RUTGERS PHARMACY LABS New Brunswick, NJ with GW Architects

Rutgers University required an upgrade to several laboratories in their School of Pharmacy. The reno-vation included reconfiguring the existing rooms to accommodate new lab casework and equipment. New MEPS systems were also coordinated.

PAL 1.0 - MANSION HOUSE. TULSA, OKLOBBY RENOVATION, FIRE PROTECTION PLAN, FURNISHINGS AND FINISHES DESIGN

Begun as a renovation of the residence lobby after a fire, the project expanded to encompass a re-planning of the public spaces of the complex. The design looked critically at the needs and activities of the elderly resi-dents of the Mansion House and created new types of spaces which address social patterns, connection to the outdoors and contemporary amenities.

Contributions to this project include detailing and updates to construction documents, as well as furnishing and finish design work.

STV 2.3 - MARTINIQUE HOTEL. NY, NYLOBBY RENOVATION, FACADE RENOVATION, CANOPY DESIGN

The Martinique Hotel is the immediately prior, less well-known work of Plaza Hotel architect James Harden-burg. While occupying a prominent spot on Herald Square, the building in its present state does not carry the same weight as its famous uptown sister. Our office has been asked to evaluate and restore this landmarked

facade to its deserved beauty. Through research of archived photos and documents, we have proposed a series of steps, including unifying main facade elements, architectural lighting, and restoration of the historic

canopy to rejuvenate the Martinique Hotel.

LEF 5.0 - HOLLYWOOD RESIDENCE. NY, NYLOBBY RENOVATION, PROTOTYPICAL LOBBY AND HALLWAY DESIGN PACKAGE

The Hollywood is one of some 50-odd apartment complexes owned and maintained by a single NYC property man-agment company. Built in the early 1960s, many of the lobbies of these residences are in disrepair and are aes-thetically out-of-date. Our office was asked to create a prototypical design package that could be implemented at all residence lobbies. We strove to develop a scheme which would define a uniform image for all lobbies, while specify-ing areas where unique elements can be applied to individualize each separate building.

Contributions include development of initial design, integration of client feedback, development of prototypical design package for bid and coordination of rendering materials.

BWH 1.12 - RAVEL HOTEL ADDITION, QUEENS, NYHOTEL ADDITION

Adjacent to his current hotel and rooftop lounge, the Ravel Hotel owner contracted our firm to design a new 13,000 sqft event space with an eight story tower of new hotel rooms attached. Following an agressive design and construction schedule, the firm is currently in the process of moving from an extended schematic design period into securing permits

to begin excavation, while making final refinements to the design for construction.

Developed multiple schemes to maximize event and accessory spaces, zoning and building code analyses, coordination of DOB approvals.

WJR 1.0 - 200 RIVERSIDE RESIDENCE. NY, NYAPARTMENT COMBINATION AND RENOVATION

This combination of two adjoining apartments focused on the development of a central kitchen and large, open public spaces. Working outward from the French country kitchen in an urban apartment, the combined apart-ment flows into an open entertaining space which is framed by the book-ends of a built-in breakfast nook and hearth/bookcase. .

Project lead duties include development of design and construction documents, coordination of building and DOB approvals, bid and award coordination, construction administration.

RMB 1.0 - 111 E. 85TH RESIDENCE, NY, NYAPARTMENT RENOVATION

Working within extremely tight exisiting conditions has become the dominating factor in this apartment renovation. We have made a huge effort to eliminate the maze effect in this unusually long apartment and put emphasis on large, free-flowing public spaces and compact private spaces. Lines of site and flexible spaces are the focus of the solu-

tion. After trying all possible combinations for layout, we feel that we have developed the best possible scheme for this restrictive floorplan.

Lunar Journey, Maps and Index compilation of Thesis research A series of maps designed to perform as documents to be taken on a visit to the Moon, information packaged with Velcro, indexed and attachable to utility belts for convenient access. Individual maps refer to spaces of the journey including launch, rocket payload, site survey, geological phenomena, water discovery and gravity anomoly.

4earthThe thesis begins on earth. I stood within the spare structure of Launch Pad 39-a. While primarily a novelty industry as we have no immediately available means for occupying these property investments, these specula-tions operate on the small voice of optimism and science fiction that whispers in the back of at least a few thou-sand peoples minds What if...in a few years we will be living on the Moon, what if this is my chance to leave an invaluable legacy? Given the current state of public and scientific interest, it is easy to write this market off as another of the myriad Internet scams plaguing soci-ety. However, for the optimists out there, if we look at the explosion of achievement between President Kennedys May 25 challenge and the first Apollo landing, it is not so farfetched to believe that the same radical advance could take place again, making valuable the once fantastic claims to lunar land.

The very existence of these sites draws attention to what little provision we have made for the possibility of a sud-den influx of lunar property owners, a fact which in turn highlights the technical immobility making unnecessary any concerns about overwhelming fulfillment of property rights. This year saw the U.S. put a complete freeze put on government spending on NASAs post-Apollo Moon rocket program, Constellation, claiming a lack of progress and an importance which pales in the face of debt crisis. Fac-ing the obstacle of political hesitancy, we cannot expect

We approach the pos-sibility of human beings who will spend large parts of their lives off of the Earth andaway from natural standards of gravity, climate, and available resource. We approach the need to define an architecture for a new kind of human existence, be-

Resilience of a dream

This project appeals to the scientists and politicians, the astronaut-hopefuls, space freaks, architects and earth-bound citizens to reopen the question of the impos-sible as an act of resilience. We are proposing neither a solution nor an architecture. Instead we are putting forth a challenge in the guise of a first stab, in the form of a wrong answer.

July 20 1969. An event made possible by the perseverance of an idea and the singularity of a populations focus, by the romanticization of nationalism through pioneering spirit and by a haunting euphemism for a far more serious motive.

December 19 1972 marked the return to Earth by the last men to walk on another planetary body and the beginning of a long pause in the exploration of the boundaries of the human condition.

These brief years demonstrated our capacity for persever-ance toward a goal and the majesty of our dreams. The end of these years demonstrated the fragility of our aims and truncated attention span for achievement. The event that captured an entire nations collective energy gave way so easily to more tangible concerns, closer to home. The dream lay dormant, slumbering beneath a shallow regolith of earthly agendas, ready to flare again briefly in 2005. However, Constellation could not win our attentions and affections as Apollo once did. Although the NASA Autho-rization Act reopened the probing of mankinds outermost boundaries with the simple statement, At the core of NASAs future space exploration is a return to the Moon, where we will build a sustainable long-term human pres-ence, dreams of space will have to weather another period of indifference before our gaze returns to the heavens.

The project begins with the purchase of a single acre of land on the lunar surface. I chose a piece of land in the Mare Orientale, reference 16.5 S, 93.6 W Tract 2, for its proximity to the farside and range of terrain features. The act of buy-ing the land set up the project, as much as possible, as a serious architectural proposal with a specific site and pa-rameters. It also hoped to critique the farcical prospect of homesteading on the Moon, a modern day business scam that echoes the races for the American west and ownership of the South Pole.

a repeat of the Space Race to catalyze the burst of an adolescent lunar real estate market. However, included in this budget cut is a note turning the business of lunar transportation over to the private sector which, if the market is right, could inspire a competitive burst of in-novation and technology. The opportunities are out there, Virgin Galactic offers a flight to the Moon for the cool price of $200 million, for those who are willing to pay.

Lunar land speculation brings the idea of Moon as site into the conventional realm of development. I have bought a piece of land and may do with it as I wish. Having ana-lyzed the terrain I have created a proposal for what I would like to place within it. By neatly packaging the lunar surface into personal-sized land parcels, the scale of the Moon is made manageable and its vast areas of un-known become domesticated, become our own.

In the course of this project I have come to realize that I am not so much concerned with creating an architecture of the Moon as I am interested in the process of getting there, in the communication of a certain atmosphere. EARTH | SATELLITE Lunar surface traverse, frame structure and multi-directional units

To fly into space is to see the reality of Earth, alone.

A satellite feeds Earth. Looking forward, looking backit relays information about the unknown to Earth in order to increase humanitys understanding of itself. Inhabiting the lunar surface is to transform a natural satellite into a satellite in active service of mankind.

The critical purpose of going to the moon is to look back at ourselves, to gain a deeper understanding of the human condition. What is missing is a destination, and a way to make these voyages meaningful. Opening up the moon as a site produces self-reflective and time-sensitive space. I propose to construct the apex of a lunar journeythe destination and the traverse.

There will always be a return to earth. There will always be another splashdown. The movement upward will always be accompanied by a fall. Destination on the lunar surfaces is about passage through space, reference within time, movement it is a self-consciousness of ground.
