PROJECT: Woodstock Toyota Xmas Layout (Spec Ad)
Employer: Trader Corporation
Brief: The directive was to re-design an existing ad template for a client who may or may no longer be a customer. This was spec work meant to lure back clients who were no longer with the company.
A Christmas / winter theme was the main creative criteria as around that time of the year most running ads would get that “treatment”. There were a few technical guidelines to follow, as with all ads for the automotive books (in regards to press limitations), but aside from that I had carte blanche.
What I Did:My approach relied on simplicity. The main objective I had was to cut through the clut ter, and create a piece that works well beyond the Christmas season (take away the snowflakes and this could be used all year).
The bold colour blocks aim to draw the viewer in while also presenting the main contact info as quickly & easily as possible. And the background image provides visual interest without overwhelming.

PROJECT: Westbury Re-Design
Employer: Trader Corporation
Brief: The brief for this was, in a nutshell, to present a family-centric ad without actually depicting a family of any specific age or ethnicity...
On top of making the residence appear to be an appealing place to live and raise a family in of course.
What I Did:This was the first ad I was asked to completely overhaul (the real estate books being the higher premium publications). I was a relatively new hire at the time, so the pressure was on to demonstrate my creativity.
This ad took a life of it ’s own once I found the right image. The picture above, in my mind, screamed of a growing, well-to-do middle class family - everything from the wall colour & decor to the teddy bear.
The colour scheme was derived from the image, although the use of pink accents was intended to sof ten up the rich brown tones and warm the piece up. Without a doubt, this ad is meant to hook parents, but could appeal to any definition of “family”.
Superb tranquil location. Outdoor swimming pool.
Best schools in North York. Tastefully updated suites.
Utilities included.

PROJECT: Schickedanz Spec Ad
Employer: Trader Corporation
Brief: Another re-design of an existing real estate ad published by Trader Corp at the time. The basic premise here was to give the ad a fresh spin and gear it towards a younger audience, yet still retain the wholesome feel that would appeal to families and also maintain the focus of the ad on the convenient local shopping available & gif t certificate offer.
What I Did:There were a few main themes I wanted to showcase - an affordable opulence, the convenience and versatility of the shops near by; the cultural diversity of the city, and the sense of comfort one has when you have a home of your own to come back to af ter your daily escapades.
This incarnation of the ad was targeted towards a dif ferent audience: young, single, and FEMALE (but not limited to that market segment). The aim here was to provide enough visual cues to lead the viewer into believing that a certain lifestyle could be had living here.
The colour scheme was kept the same to stick with company colours, but inverted for some flair.

PROJECT: The Shop.ca
Employer: Trader Corporation
Brief: This piece was typical of the workflow at Trader Corp.
Bare-bone instructions submit ted as a rough sketch.It had a working headline and copy, but li t t le else.
No supplied images (as there was no specific inventory to showcase). There was however the suggestion of a dollar sign encased in a maple leaf with arrows to indicate a price decrease on one side of the headline with the Harley-Davidson logo on the other side with arrows moving in the opposite direction; as well as all tex t being centre-justif ied.
The client ’s creative assets & contact info were already on-file, so this piece was open for interpretation. The only stipulations I had to work within were that this ad was to be printed black & white on newsprint with one spot colour.
This ad allowed me to stray from the grid-based parameters for most automotive ads, play with dif ferent font combinations, and explore a visual style that was less “corporate” than usual as well as being a style that’s somewhat foreign to me.
This ad is clearly meant for any one interested in buying a motorbike, but the look & feel I wanted to project was “western”, “going against the grain/modern rebel”, and “grunge”... My aim was to visualize an aesthetic representative of the lifestyle the product embodies.
What I Did:
PROJECT: Ladies Sweatpant Screenprint
Employer: Dubwear Clothing Co.
Brief:The “hospital scrub”, a.k .a. bum-screenprint was a big winner for Dubwear over the years, but the look had got ten stale over t ime.
The ar t depar tment was tasked to develop a fresh take on the idea. Something that was simultaneously “cut ting edge” & “trendy” while being respect ful of our client-base’s image (post-secondary institutions). The design had to be one that could be easily modified from the template version to suit each individual school.
Max 2-colour ink combination.
What I Did:At the time (2007), fashion lines like Juicy Couture were just coming into the mainstream and were garnering a reputation for producing athletic lounge-wear with a “rockstar” sensibility.
Without completely aping the look, that was precisely what I had in mind here. The design helped to move a lot of product.

PROJECT: Men’s Sweatshirt
Employer: Dubwear Clothing Co.
Brief:One of the premium ar ticles of clothing Dubwear sold was the Men’s Sweatshir t Jersey with a twill appliqué & screenprint embellishment.
A re-design of the template was issued to breath new life into the garment. The brief called on the design to be contemporary while t imeless, and versatile enough to f i t the wide range of the company’s client roster.
The production requirements were: 1-colour screenprint , 1-colour twill appliqué, and 1-colour embroidery.
What I Did:While sticking with the familiar layout of most athletic apparel, I chose to deviate from the use of “collegiate” typefaces to a look that had it’s roots in what I can only describe as the “old wild west”.
Why? The short of it is, I played with many font combinations and concepts, but this particular mix had what I felt was a very masculine feel... It worked well as orders went up for this garment.

PROJECT: Camp Coochiching Baseball hat
Employer: Dubwear Clothing Co.
Brief:Camp Coochiching, one of Dubwear’s corporate clients, requested a re-invention of their logo to be embroidered on baseball caps given out to the kids.
The criteria was to give the new logo a “street / skateboard” inspired look, referencing clothing lines like Billabong, Element, DC Shoe Co., Ecko Unlimited, et cetera while still faithfully representing the group... Something that the kids could wear beyond the camp.
There were no restrictions on how many colours could be used, but keeping costs down was a consideration.
What I Did:Simplifying the logo down to their barest elements was my first priority as the original logo was very “busy”.
This particular treatment was inspired by the clean, geometric style of labels Element & LRG... The dual C’s signifying the camp’s name are shown as concentric octagons, visually evoking a pat tern similar to wood-rings; the idea being camping = the outdoors = trees.
A literal symbolic representation of a pine tree, waves for water and the sun were kept to stay faithful to the source logo. The canoe paddles & establishment date were moved to a side embroidery position in order to tie the past together with the present.
Unfortunately the order was cancelled for reasons unknown.

PROJECT: Rebel Apparel 2006 Catalogue
Employer: Visual Concepts
Brief: Rebel Apparel had been approached to contract out the design & print of a catalogue showcasing their wares by Visual Concepts, my employer at the time. With an emphasis on the clothing, a clean, minimal layout & visual overtone was utilized. It ran full-colour on glossy paper, saddle-stitched, 32 pages.
What I Did:Short of printing and assembling the book myself (which I initially over-saw to ensure quality control), a bet ter question to ask would be, “what didn’t I do?” Concept to completion, this was my biggest creative project at the time.
I was responsible for the Art Direction, Layout, Colour Correction, Photo Re-touching - literally everything. The client loved the finished product, and in fact this project helped land another position a few years later as that prospective employer was familiar with this piece of work.

PROJECT: Salon Bellavance Business Card / Logo
Employer: Freelance
Brief:This was done at a time when I was freelancing (between 2004-2006), and I would get the odd design job here and there from my printer contacts...
There was no brief to speak of. No guidelines, nothing in particular the client wanted to portray - all I had to work from was from an email stating, “business card / logo design” and the specifics in terms of name & contact info.
I knew the printer would be running the design together with other items in a gang-run, so I had no real limits in terms of print restrictions.
What I Did:Since this design was meant to convey a hair salon’s image, I looked at how other salons chose to represent themselves... There’s a lot of variety out there.
My thought process turned to expressing a “uniqueness”. Something that stands out from the crowd. A signature.
Af ter scribbling out some roughs, I scanned a few variations of the let tering and created a composite in Photoshop (Fig. 1) which was subsequently traced, cleaned up and altered in Illustrator.
One of my initial ideas for the logo included a pair of barbershop scissors I had created, but couldn’t find a way to work into the new signature style. The symbol is a clear representation of the services provided - an element I generally wanted to keep in the design. So I used it instead as a subtle background pattern to give the card some depth while reinforcing what the client does.
The overall design was quickly (and happily) approved, with one requested revision - to somehow incorporate images of contemporary hair styles onto the card. What you see above is the final version that went to print.

Visual communication has always fascinated me... Okay, so maybe
it was more like an obsession. It's what led me to pursue a career in
graphic design.
I've been designing professionally since 2003 after completing a
certification in Digital Design for Print & Pre-press at Humber College...
There's always more to learn though - I actively keep up-to-date with
the latest design techniques & trends independently via tutorials and just
general observations of the world around me.
My specialty lies in print design. I've worked with a variety of
clients spanning all sorts of industries - to (their) great satisfaction.
