R E S I D E N T I A L : GEORGIAN BAY COTTAGE
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The co age aimed to exude a modern architectural statement, therefore moving far away from
tradi onal co age homes. The co age is designed to be built on Georgian Bay’s rocky terrain, therefore the
co age is mul -leveled. Space planning was a huge factor in the design process as not only did the spaces need to make absolute sense as a fl oor plan, but they also had to coinside with the landscape level changes,
par cular rooms needed to have the approproate sunlight, and others to obtain op mal views of the Bay.
Large architectural sla ed walls are used for support, as well as a screen to create privacy from nieghbours, and
make the clients feel as though they own the whole Bay to themselves, crea ng a retreat from society and life.
This project aimed towards the architecture aspects of design, focusing on the structu-real elements, roof plan, as well as sustainable details.

The exterior eleva ons show the terrain level changes, and the window placements in regards to the direc on of the sun
and wind. The sec on highlights some of the sustainable features of the co age, including a light shelf located in the
living room . The roof allows the light shelf to distribute the light throughout the room effi ciently. Also the sec on shows the use of solar tubes which allow sunlight to be used rather
than electricity 24 hours a day.

STREWN Winery proposed to rennovate their current winery
located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, to create a new modern image while keeping the wineries beliefs, goals
and mo o. Due to the rennova on, the re-design of this
winery needed to be built in constraints to the old building
structure, therefore needing to keep cetain posts, beams and walls
to ensure that the building would be safe and to code. Also the
project proposed square footage constrainsts for the base plan as
well as the mezzanine plan, sta ng par cular appropriate square
footages for each space.
The concept for this NEW Strewn Winery was derived from the
idea on of the vineyards, and the linear quali es. However, except
taking the tradi onal horizontal and ver cal aspects of the vineyards,
chose to use a diagonal lineality to create a very unique and
architecturally pleasing building.

One aspect of the winery that was a main focuswas the execu ve tas ng area, that is reserved for only pre booked wine tas ng
gatherings. This space if used for also demonstra ons, therefore this is the
reason that it with holds its own demonstra on kitchen. Also, due to the use
of this space, and because it is an “execu ve” area, chose to place it on the
mezzanine level so it was secluded and gave the visitors the feeling of execu vity as it is seperate from the rest of the public areas.
Also, this space has its own private exterior deck that allows views to the winery to
allow the visitors to gain the en re wine tas ng experience.

The autumn season was used as the inspira on for the chosen materials. Warm and rich colours and textures overall allows the space to be comfortable and cozy.

Du e to the buildings use, the concept arose by the
of hope and new beginnings. Every horizon brings a new day, a new outlook on life, and a chance to forget
to use the concept of a sunrise, which became evident especially in the buildings plan.
