ThesisBeing a representation of Imperial Rule on India, the major axis of New Delhi was called ‘The King’s Way’ and the minor axis, ‘The Queen’s Way’. After Independence, they were re-chris-tened as Rajpath and Janpath respec-tively, to reflect the young democracy it represented.

However there is a contradiction in the names today. Shouldn’t the largest de-mocracy in the world name its ‘grand monumental axis’ to reflect its status as a democracy?

Shouldn’t Rajpath be really called Janpath?

Janpath – Sanskrit; Jana path Jan - Jana – person Janaah – persons/peoplePath - Path – road/wayRaj - Raj – kingdom/king/govt.

Hence Janpath means ‘the road/way of the people’, while Rajpath means ‘the way of the King/Kingdom/Nation’.

The current arrangement thus gives more importance to Rajpath, and hence the government. This puts the govern-ment above the people.

However in today’s India, a vibrant democracy, shouldn’t the people be greater and more important than the government?

In Sir Edwin Lutyens’ vision, the cross-ing between King’s Way and Queen’s Way was to be flanked on its four corners by large public institutions.

This thesis proposes to start from Lutyens’ idea and extend it along the Rajpath of today.

This would create a large open lawn, bound on both sides by buildings that the common man may come and enjoy; this involvement of the ‘Jan’ of India rendering Rajpath into Janpath as it ideally should be.

ThesisConcepts

Forts have always been the primary military structure throughout the ages. Since theie early history thay hace fol-lowed similar patterns that make them successfull, irrespective of the material used or their location.

The Museum has been imagined as a fort with the artifacts of mili-tary history.

To increase connectivity to the Central Vista, the central space of the plot is accessible via slope that goes under the walls and through the ‘moat.

The twin spirals draw inspiration from the rifling of the gun barrel. Ri-fling refers to the two spiral grooves cut into the barrel of a gun so as o induce a spin in the bullet when fired, increasing its accuracy.

The spirals will share common floor plates in the alternate towers. These common plates can be used to create alternate paths of storytelling that may create more interest for the visitor who is bored by the linear arrabngement.

The exhibition inside the museum is proposed to be a walk through the history of warfare. While focusing on matters relevant to India, it should also include great events in the global his-tory of war.

The main entry to the museum is through a bridge crossing over this moat. The side towards Maulana Azad road is burmed to create a boundary as well as to draw parallels to forts on hills.

This also helps in reducing the impact of the large built volume on the side with more built context.

UP Spiral Takes the outer galleries to go from Plate 1(the lowest plate) to Plate 9(the highest plate)

DN Spiral takes the outer galleries to go from Plate 9(the highest plate) to Plate 1(the lowest plate)

Some plates are shared between both the spirals while others are not.
