Personal Statement

It always interested me why people acted in certain ways and felt certain feelings. When I was in High School I started to pay closer attention to people. I would sit in class and let people debate about topics that I was curious about, however I found it more interesting to listen to the debate than to get involved. Eventually I took a psychology course and became extremely impressed with the human brain and how it functioned. Unfortunately that was the only class our High School had to offer and it was only three months long.

Not knowing what I wanted to be when I grew up I attended college just taking classes and had no real direction. Eventually I found that there were more and more psychology classes that were offered, and I started taking as many as I could. It wasn’t until I was working in the mortgage business for five years that I realized this wasn’t the career path I wanted to continue with. While working in the mortgage company has a lot to do with numbers, it also has a lot to do with knowing how to deal with people. I am not enthused with the financial part, but realized I liked the communications part, so I decided to make a career change and complete my Bachelors in Psychology.

Personal Statement

I am currently looking to get into the field and, “getting my feet wet,” as they say. I am enthused with the human brain and its functions. The brain is responsible for so much of our daily functions, from emotions to physical movement. Learning how the brain functions will ultimately lead to a person being able to control their emotions and feelings. Children need the most guidance in this. They are affected by so much which can go unnoticed by an uncaring parent. I believe by give children the correct guidance and care will lead them to be better adults, which in turn will pass that along to their children.

After being in the field and working with children I plan on going back to grad school. I have thought about being a High School Guidance counselor for many years now. The reason being is that I had such a negative experience with all the guidance counselors in my early education.

My Future in Learning

Learning is a lifelong process. I envision my future as a lifelong learner. With beginning my career in psychology I plan on learning about the different behaviors and mental disorders of children. Starting at this level will hopefully show me first hand the therapeutic care that children need to help grow into functioning adults. Eventually I plan on going back for my Masters Degree and or my PHD. By continuing to work in the field, learning will be part of my every day experience with every new client I encounter.
