The main construction of the build-ing should be in wood (solid wood for ceilings and framework for the walls). only the circulation and the installation wells should be out of concrete. In the inside the surface should be made of prefabricated clay-boards to achieve a good room climate and high living comfort.

ENERGY CONCEPT:At the left axonometric section you see the ventilation system: fresh air from the green space is directed under the earth to the block. The discharged air is warming up by the supply air through a heat exchanger. Extra heat comes from solar heat col-lector on the roof or the district heat.

In the reight axonometric sec-tion two water systems, a fresh water system and a grey water system are shown. The solar heat collector heats the incoming fresh water and the rainwater used for the washing machines. For back up there is the district heat. The grey water from the wash-ing machines is used for toilette flushing in the upper floors. In the other floors the grey wa-ter from the bathrooms and the rainwater is used for toilet flushing. All sewage water is treated in a biological sewage treatment to be reused for toilet flushing and watering plants.

Page 15: Portfolio 2014 SELECTION

15

OPEN SPACE CONCEPT:We use the green space to gain maximum of solar energy for the whole building complex. For that we took the standard size of a photovoltaic panel (1,60 x 0,80m) and put it together so we got four different types in height. As positioning angle we took 45° and the distances between the different panels is calcu-lated with the shade a spring or fall sun makes. With this panels we create a huge field which is accessible only by a few paths. Following the path one is sometimes bigger than the panels and has an overview and sometimes goes in between them like in a forest. In the middle of the field is a place where people from all blocks can meet. The construction of the panels al-lows to add seating furniture.

ENVIRONMENT OF HEIGHTMy project deals with the increasing of the height sensation to an extreme. On one hand I developed different types of living-units, all 50 sqm big, beginning with a simple box, which is open to one side (room high window). The variation of the window size influences the experience of height. The “safest” unit has a window of 4.5m width so the unit is very long. The users can choose how much they want to expose themselves to the depth, they have four visual reference surfaces (walls, floor and ceiling) to stabilize. The window of the most “dangerous” unit has a length of 13.0m. The whole living is orientated along the window, so that the user is constantly confronted with the sensation of height. He has only one visual reference surface which is the floor. On the other hand I tried to minimize the visual reference surfaces when putting the units together to a whole. This I achieved by slightly increasing shifting or/and twisting the units to each other. First only all units from one level, then each single unit relating to the unit below. The more the tower grows the bigger is the shifting and twisting, until single towers develop and the feeling of instability increases because of a lack of solid visual reference surfaces. Because of the torsion of the towers and because of static reasons the towers meet and connect to each other in some points in different heights. Then new reference surfaces are created and the continuously increase of the height experience blurs.

CONTRUCTION AND MATERIALSAll constructions should be build in “passivhaus standard”. The primary construc-tion is out of wood frames. The space between the main beams is insulated if fac-ing outdoor and wooden plates on each side close the panels. Walls and ceilings different in the height of the beams. To the inside there is an instalation layer, so the primary construction is not touched and changes can easaly take place. The outer experience of the building is deter-mind by wooden, rear ventilated laths, fixed in a vertically pattern. the fresh brown colour of the wood may soon turn into a lively silver gray. The inner surfaces of the loggia are all painted white, to refelct the light into the rooms. The openings towards the loggia from the flat are roomhight so the con-nection of outside and inside is intensifyed. The feeling that the outdoor space of the flat is part of the indoor space is also emphasized by the floor which continues in one level.

FROM AYURVEDA TO ARCHITECTURE

master thesis // s 2013 // academy of fine arts Vienna

advisor: Michelle Howard, Christian Fröhlichproject location: Vienna

ABSTRACTThe intention of my master thesis is to com-bine two interests of mine: Architecture and Ayurveda. My fascination for Ayurveda start-ed with the beginning of my Ayurveda-train-ing six years ago and is growing ever since. This fascination is due to the universal con-cepts of Ayurveda which is based on the five elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. This master thesis project is an Ayurveda Health Care Centre, located in the 15th dis-trict of Vienna. It tries to apply the ayurvedic concept of the three “doshas” into architec-ture. This application takes place by using the qualities and characteristics of each do-sha to create different conditions and experi-ences in space. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, Kapha and can be described as ener-getic principles. Each is formed by two of five elements. The focus of the project lies on producing di-verse ambiences and different sensory per-ceptions with materials, program and space. By walking on the site one of the most strik-ing experiences was the change of sounds from a busy traffic noise to silence and birds twittering. Inspired by this experience the chosen program is arranged on the site. The building is structured in three parts relating to the three doshas and their qualities to al-low the experience of atmospheric special conditions.
