My name is James Coleman, and I am in my second year at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. The two areas that inspire me most are real world sustainability and the application of technology in meaningful ways. I am a strong believer in the capacity of good design to improve the quality of people’s everyday lives. I am motivated by the opportunity to take on any worthwhile problem – independent of scale or medium – and I am an advocate for interdisciplinary problem solving. It is my belief that the only way to achieve truly innovative solutions is to work collaboratively with people of a variety of backgrounds and skills sets.

It is a machine for writing - a place of retreat for the creative professional, built around the creative process. For to the writer wishing to straighten out their thoughts the cabin is clean, minimal, and organized. From all areas of rest and utility the cabin invites the occupant to get lost in expansive forest views, and find spark for the imagination. Drawn open, the glass walls invite in the sound of the creek. When it comes time to work the writer finds them self in a deliberate workspace, guarded from behind by the works of other writers. Here the view is only forward.

This installation won the competition to be exhibited at Scotia Bank’s Nuit Blanche Art Festival on October 4, 2014. The project offered festival goers a new perspective on the city. Footage - captured from high above Toronto by our hexacopter drone - was projected onto the inside of an geodesic dome, 8 meters in diameter. A birds eye view was superimposed on the viewers skyward gaze providing a disorienting and immersive experience. The project took approximately 8 months to complete and was the joint effort of 16 students from the School of Architecture.

This infill project on St Clair Avenue in Toronto is all about letting the light in, and the views out. The ground floor invites in pedestrians with its restaurant space, and offers them a place of repose in the warmth of the southern sun. This building seeks to provide a “backyard” to both the residents and passers-by. The units seek to take advantage of orientation, offering up communal spaces to southern exposure. As you ascend the structure you gain access to views of Toronto and the lake. The lucky owner of the penthouse is able to enjoy these assets from the comfort of their soaker tub.

The idea is simple: if venues for urban sports - like skateboarding - are designed with the same care as buildings, then they will ennoble the practitioners and public appreciation will rise. Many city councils classify urban sports athletes as “undesirables”, and attempt to remove them from public places. To do this, land in sports complexes is designated to poorly designed facilities. By designing parks in tune with the urban fabric of cities, the spirit of urban sports will be embodied in the facilities provided for them.

Failaka Island Grotto embodies the belief that architecture can be a machine for habitation. The whole structure is designed for the purpose of cooling down its interior space. It captures the wind, accelerates and cools it, while drawing out the hot stale air from its interior. The falling water fills the air with water particles that exaggerate the evaporative cooling abilities of human skin. It is cool, it’s quiet, and it’s completely off the grid. It is architecture as A/C unit.

It is my dream to build structures that will make decisions about how best to utilize natural forces, maximizing comfort and efficiency with the help of technology.

Zeus is a mini weather station that will help buildings make decisions about how best to harness the sun and the wind.

WaterWindows is a concept for an evaporative cooling system that could help keep interior spaces cool. Failaka Island Grotto utilizes the same principles.
