Heyburn State Park Master PlanHeyburn State Park has been a popular destination in Northern Idaho since its establishment in 1908. To service the increasing number of visitors to the park, there is need to expand and offer a wider range of services. This includes a new master plan for the Chatcolet Marina to accommodate relocated float homes from Hidden Bay, additional boat moorage for visitors, and a concessions and rental building. Residents and visitors alike can access rental gear for boating, fishing, or biking at the camp store which sits along the longest stretch of bike trail in North Idaho. This project embraces the original vernacular and traditions of the park while encouraging community.

Asbury Courtyard ApartmentsThe integrated living community is aimed at providing solutions for winter depression through the influence of arts and crafts traditions, the implementation of sunlight, and the notion of beyond. Sited in Moscow, Idaho, the complex is traditional in design, its bungalow style identifying with the existing neighborhood vernacular. Each of the six living units have parlor-style floor plans leading the users to look beyond, to discover spaces inside and out. From each unit, residents have access to semi-private sun decks for summer use with adjoining sun rooms for the winter months. Low planters and benches within the courtyard encourage lingering while a great central tree spreads towards the deep porches grounding and connecting residents. A main hall gathers residents within the complex, offering vaulted ceilings, a great fire place, meeting room and exercise room. This space is meant to provide warmth, light and inspiration to residents.

London Studio - Serpentine Pavilion CharretteThe Serpentine Gallery is a historic art gallery in Hyde Park, London. Each year, the Gallery selects an architect to design a pavilion for the green space in front of the building. The pavilion is designed, constructed and used to host charity events over the summer months before being auctioned off at the end of the year. As part of the London Studio, students in teams of four worked side by side with professionals on a one-day charrette to design their own Serpentine Pavilion. The Pavilion is designed to have minimal impact on the site while taking advantage of simple sustainable systems such as film photovoltaics, rammed earth floors and reclaimed hardwood. PFTE roof membrane over light-weight PVC construction directs and catch rainwater, while providing a flexible and adaptable space that is light-weight and easily transported. The Pavilion acts as a gateway to the Gallery, retaining views with the park and pedestrians.

Boise Performing Arts CenterThe 32,350 square-foot complex houses a 750-seat proscenium theater, a 180-seat black-box theater, a recording studio, several rehearsal rooms, and an amphitheater. To enter the complex, one transverses up the corridor to the entrance from either end of the block. From the corridor, patrons can access each program element separate from the rest of the complex. In accordance with Capitol City Development Corporation, streets along the site are lined with trees, use street scape dimensions and materials as recommended, and provide a pedestrian-friendly zone with storefronts and access along the busy arterial streets of Capitol and Front. To the south, current pedestrian corridors along Broad and 6th Streets extend the BoDo and the Basque Block to a corner development slated for future shopping, food and night life.The site is comprised of one large city block located at the intersection of Capitol Boulevard and Front Street. Currently a surface parking lot, it is in the midst of several downtown Boise landmarks: The Center on the Grove, BoDo, Regal Cinemas, Dunkely’s Music, Boise Weekly, University of Idaho Integrated Design Lab, Boise Art Glass, Office Depot, Hampton Suites, the old Boise Mission, the Bank of America and the Front Five are all within a block to the Performing Arts Center.

SUSTAINABILITY:

Designed to meet LEED Silver Certification and comply with Capitol City Development Corporation (CCDC Boise) streetscape plans, the complex uses rooftop photovoltaics to collect and store energy for on-site use and Green credits. The site is mostly xeriscaped but the few plantings are irrigated by grey water from the building and stored water from the high water table.

Legacy Crossing redevelopment planLegacy Crossing has been in the public eye of Moscow for several years, generating interest through its industrial history and controversial possibilities for development. In the design of this site, we wanted to preserve the existing sack warehouse, provide public transportation spaces, a flexible and protected plaza along Hello Walk, and maintin high living densities. The 6th Street Building shares an atrium space with the sack warehouse and provides public restrooms for the plaza. The Jackson Street Building has commercial programs at the first level, with apartments above and the option of a rooftop garden for resident use. The building along 6th and Jackson Streets terrace down from the historic silos to be greeted by integrated site features such as planters and swales. These site features help mitigate water retention by directing overflow to Paradise Creek. Designed to follow the City of Moscow’s Urban Redevelopment Agency’s guidelines and to create heart between the University of Idaho and downtown Moscow, Legacy Crossing can be a valuable asset to the community of Moscow.

VIEW LOOKING TO SACK WAREHOUSE: Preservation and renovation of the sack warehouse will help retain the site quality and provide new space for functions such as Moscow Farmer’s Market.

SITE SECTION THROUGH PLAZA: The existing silo and the renovated sack warehouse compliment each other while providing plaza edges and adaptable spaces within the plaza.

PLAZA: Celebrating the preserved silo structure and the industrial nature of the site while creating flexible spaces for public and private use such as art exhibitions and concerts.
