PORTERS FINISH GREAT SEASON CONFERENCE, REGIONAL, SECTIONAL CHAMPS
2013 will be remembered as one
of the most successful seasons in
recent memory. The Porters
completed the season with a 32
and 8 record and several cham-
pionships. It was a season that
saw the team struggle early,
become stronger and end as one
of the top 8 teams in Class 4A
baseball in Illinois.
After 17 games the Porters had a
very average 11-6 record overall.
After 3 SWSC games the Porters
were 1-2 and struggling. Then
things turned around and they
finished by winning 21 of their
next 23 games. During this
stretch, the Porters won 10 of 11
conference games to share the
SWSC Blue conference title with
Joliet West. Later, the Porters
would collect regional and sec-
tional titles for the first time
since 2005.
Not only did the team play good
baseball during this stretch, they
dominated their opponents. This
was the result of timely hitting,
great pitching and solid defense.
During the 23 game stretch Lock-
port pitchers threw 11 shutouts
and held opponents to 2 runs or
less in 18 games. In addition, they
committed 1 or no errors in 14
games. The offense, not to be out-
done, outscored opponents 144-33
and collected 190 hits and aver-
aged almost 6 runs and 8 hits per
game. It was an all around
outstanding TEAM effort by
everyone.
Post season play saw the Porters
roll thru the T.F. North Regional
eliminating Marist 9-1 and defen-
ding 3A State Champion Marion
Catholic 3-0. In the Providence
sectional, Lockport defeated the
host Celtics 2-1 in dramatic
fashion with LF Ron Sessler
knocking in the winning run in the
bottom of the 7th and then beat
SWSC rival L-Way East 10-0 in 5
innings. This led the Porters to
their 1st Super-Sectional since
2005 and pitted the No. 2 Porters
against top-ranked Mt. Carmel. In
an exciting game the Porters

Speed/Conditioning Coach
Lockport Porters Varsity
CCooaacchheess CCoorrnneerr:: TThhee Truth Behind Speed Training Speed is a major part of all sports,
baseball included. It can be found in all
parts of the game- running the bases,
chasing down a ball, or coming off the
mound to field a bunt. “Speed kills” or
“courtesy kills” are popular
expressions here in our baseball pro-
gram. Every coach understands the
importance of speed in their sport, but
some are unsure how to train for it.
Here is the truth I have found about
speed training.
There is so much research out there
on speed training and everyone claims
to be an expert. The most important
element is to understand the role speed
plays in your sport and what goals you
are trying to reach with your training.
It has been found that athletes from
the age of 12-14 respond best to speed
training. During this time, their Central
Nervous System (CNS) and muscle
fibers are still developing and can be
molded to have a major impact on their
development and speed potential if
they are coached properly. This is the
best time to train to increase stride
frequency. One of the best things you
can do at this age is introduce your
athlete to as many different sports and
activities as possible. This will help
develop coordination, balance, body
awareness, and speed.
Unfortunately for high school
coaches, our athletes are already over
the age of 14. Once an athlete gets
older and their CNS matures, it
becomes more difficult to improve
stride frequency compared to stride
length. Some of the elements I try to
focus on with our athletes are:
increasing their relative strength,
flexibility, and mobility. Improvement
in these areas lead us to being able
to increase our acceleration.
Besides not knowing exactly how
to train speed, one of the common
mistakes a coach can make is over-
coaching, especially when it comes
to technique. This really only
applies to non-track athletes where
perfect sprinting technique is not as
crucial. As a coach you must under-
stand how different each of your
athletes is physically. There cannot
be a “one size fits all” approach for
teaching technique.
You also want to make sure you
do not use too many cues while
working with your athletes. Give
one cue at a time and let the athlete
fix it. “Fix one thing at a time and
you’ll have an 85% success rate.
Try fixing two things and it drops to
37%. Try fixing three things and
you’re screwed!” (Buddy Morris,
Strength & Conditioning Coach at
Pitt).
While playing their sport, athletes
must react to an unpredictable
environment and real game-time
situations. This is why it is so
important for an athlete to be very
agile. Increasing agility is a crucial
element to improve your speed. The
best ways to increase agility over
time is to (1) get stronger, (2)
improve ability to accelerate, (3)
improve ability to decelerate, (4)
increasing sporting age (time
playing your sport), and (5)
incorporate chaotic drills to simu-
late unpredictable game-time situ-
ations.
There is so much else that goes
into speed training, and I am still
learning and just scratching the
surface. It is important to
understand that every sport, every
athlete, and every age level is
different, so the best approach to
speed training is going to vary.
With proper coaching and
determination, your athletes will be
on their way to becoming faster
than ever.

We are extremely proud of all of our players who further their education after they leave our program. This group above will become even
bigger as ten 2013 Porters go on to play at the collegiate level; Ted Snidanko (Purdue U.), Evan Martens (Southern Illinois U.-Edwardsville),
Derek Bangert (Heartland Community College), Thomas Smith (Northwest Missouri State U.), Jeff Pattison, Ron Sessler and Nick
Lindemann (Joliet Junior College), Doug Matthews (Dominican University), Connor Ryan and Eric Duzan (Prairie State College). In

completed his freshman season for the
Flyers with a 1-1 record pitching in 8
games and starting 2. In 17 IP, he had an
11.12 ERA.

started 40 of the 44 games he played and
finished with a .284 BA with 22 RBI. He
was among the leaders in SLG.% (.331)
and OB % (.340). He was also perfect in
the SB dept. going 8 for 8.

Porter Baseball “Senior Moments”
Eric Duzan……………………………………….P The Porters knew coming into the season that Eric would be one of their main weapons on the mound.
They knew they would have to depend on him to come through and indeed he did. Eric finished the
season 8-1 with an unbelievable ERA of 0.66. Over 52 2/3 IP Eric gave up only 5 earned runs and
had a K-BB ration of 52-18. In 7 starts of over 5 innings he shut out his opponents 6 times. He now
ranks 2nd
for ERA in the Porter record book. Eric will be attending Prairie State College in the fall.
Derek Bangert………………………………….C-DH “D Bang” or “Big Bang” was counted on to provide the Porters with exactly that….bang!. He
certainly came through as Derek finished the 2013 season with a .377 BA and was selected All-State
for the 2nd
consecutive season. Of his 40 hits this season, “Bang” had 19 for extra bases including 9
homeruns with 44 RBI. Defensively, Derek had 33 assists as a catcher ranking among the leaders in
the Porter record book. Derek will be attending Heartland Community College in Bloomington, Il.
this fall.
Doug Matthews…………………………………….3B “Dougie” returned to the hot corner for the Porters and was needed for steady defense and consistent
hitting in the middle of the batting order. Doug accomplished both for the Porters. 2013 saw Doug
bat .304 with 13 extra-base hits including 7 2B’s and 3 homeruns. He also had 23 RBI. Anyone who
attended Porter games also saw Doug “flash the leather” at 3B with his trademark “run through”
throws to 1B. He had 65 assists. Doug will attend Dominican University in River Forest, Il. in the
fall.
Jeff Milas……………………………………….OF “Milo” was one of the four outstanding senior outfielders returning to the Porters this season. The
group developed a reputation for its solid defense and Jeff was a major part of that. He was flawless
in the field handling all of his chances. Offensively, Jeff will be remembered for his clutch pinch hits
throughout the season. Especially memorable was his HR at Sandburg that put the Eagles away in a
crucial conference game. His post season pinch AB’s were huge including his big pinch hit RBI
single in the regional game vs. Marist and the big RBI SAC fly vs. Marian. He will attend NIU.
Jeff Pattison……………………………………….OF “Patti” was another of the four outstanding senior outfielders the Porters depended upon this season.
The defensive reputation the OF had was in part based on Jeff ‘s strong arm and at times acrobatic
catches in RF. He was flawless as well in the field handling all 41 chances. Offensively, Jeff
finished 2013 with a .310 BA. He had 31 hits in 100 AB’s and 17 RBI. On the base path, Jeff was
one of the Porters “speedsters” and had 9 SB’s. Jeff will continue his baseball, playing for Coach
Wayne King at Joliet Junior College.
Jeff Duschene……………………………………….2B One of the Porters “3 Jeffs”, “Dusch” made the coaches realize what they had at 2B last year during
the summer season. His solid defense, timely hitting and aggressiveness on the bases became a
trademark of how hard Jeff would play. Those same qualities came through during the 13’ season.
Jeff hit .302 and although hitting at the bottom of the order most of the year, he had 22 RBI indicative
of his clutch performance. He was very solid at 2B and finished with 85 assists (6th
in Porter Record
book) and a .930 fielding %. Jeff will be attending Joliet Junior College in the fall.

for spots on the summer team. They
went through drills and also played
three games where they competed
against each other. Evaluations
were made by the summer coaching
staff and 28 positions were filled.
The summer roster can be seen on

Update
2013 Spring weather. In 2013
those two words brought
shivers to many who are
involved in baseball at Flink
Field. The especially long
period of cold and wet
weather played havoc with
the schedule but especially
the field.
However, due to the hard
work and dedication of the
maintenance staff and the
Porter team and coaches we
played a full schedule of 35
regular season games.
The coaches and players
greatly appreciate the time
and commitment of the
maintenance staff and
would like to extend a giant
thank you to these guys!!!
We couldn’t have done it
without you.

a paver pathway was put in

hope to complete that

tradition of committing several
games per season for special
causes or events. This season the
Porters helped raise almost $8,000
for pediatric cancer research
during their “Make Your Mark”
day in April vs. Minooka. They
continued in May with 3 more
“special days”. On May 12th they
doubled up by hosting 2 special
games. In the morning, they
dedicated the game vs. Stevenson
for “Military Appreciation Day”
honoring all who have and are
serving in the armed forces. Later
that night, they continued their
Finish of Great Season cont’d
(cont’d)
tradition of honoring the
program’s tradition by hosting
members of the 1992 Porters
whose season saw them placing 4th
in the IHSA State Tournament.
92’ players and coaches were
honored at home plate and given a
sign commemorating their season
that was later placed on the LF
fence.
We could go on and on about this
group of players. How all of the
seniors will go on to college, how
the 2013 team made places for
themselves in the Porter Baseball
Record Book (see website under
HISTORY) or how the new seniors
and juniors will begin their
journey this summer to uphold the
tradition of great baseball at
LTHS. We quite frankly don’t
have the space. What we will say
about these great young men is
THANK YOU. Thank you for
giving us the privilege of working
with you and knowing you. Good
luck in the future!

“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion of their commitment to excellence, regardless of their
chosen field of endeavor”
Coach Hall and 92’ Porters Revisit Flink Field The 34-7 1992 Porters were among the 4 remaining teams in the Class AA IHSA State Tournament. They got there the
old-fashioned way…they earned it. Another Porter baseball team that earned all of their titles is the 2013 squad. On
May 11th, the 2013 Porters honored their 92’ counterparts with special ceremonies and festivities before the game against
Naperville Central. In the picture above, you can see Coach Hall (in maroon jacket back row middle) surrounded by his
former team and coaches along with the 2013 team and coaches. They are holding the commemorative sign that is now
hanging in the row of honor on the left field fence along with the sign from the 97’ 2nd
Place team honored last season.
When finished, signs honoring state tournament teams from 1963, 1984, 1992, 1997, 1998 and 2005 will hang on that
wall. The wall will serve as a reminder of the fine tradition of baseball excellence at LTHS.
