Fireworks & ConcertsJuly 4, 2012 – The annual Riverside Summer Concert Series kicks off on July 4, 2012 with a FREE public concert and fireworks display at Marina Park. This popular summer concert series brings an exciting lineup of family friendly bands that provide lively music as well as a variety of delicious food vendors.

The Justin Klump Band will be opening the festivities at 6:00 p.m. with music that will get your feet tapping. Performing on acoustic guitar, Justin is an exciting folk-rock singer-songwriter based in Portland, Ore. He will bring his entire crew down to the port to entertain the crowd.

Big Night Out, a twelve-piece rock, pop, and funk, cover band, is the headliner that begins at 8:30 p.m. Their All-Star Horn Section, directed by former KC & The Sunshine Band lead trumpet player, Conte Bennett, delivers a tightly focused, dynamite punch and sizzle sound. Lead male vocalist Jeff Beatty, an outstanding artist specializing in Motown hits, was the lead singer for 5 Guy’s Named Moe for many years. With a never-ending wave of recognizable favorites, Big Night Out gives audience members a reason to get up and dance. Two male and three female singers cover classic and current hits side

by side with a mix that appeals to an entire audience.

At 10 p.m., immediately following Big Night Out’s performance, the annual fireworks

display begins! Sponsored by the City of Washougal, the fireworks are visible high above the Columbia River, so bring your low back chairs and enjoy the best, family friendly fireworks show north of Portland!

August 17, 2012 – The Riverside Concert Series continues with a Friday evening

performance by a band nominated for the 2012 Portland Music Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Country Music. This popular group,

“Flexor T” from the Pacific Northwest puts on a country/rock/Vegas style show with high-energy dancers and lots of fun for the audience. This show looks as good as it sounds! You will hear country music from the 1970’s to current, classic rock from the 70’s and 80’s, plus original material.

Flexor T was formed in 2010 when Brian Pelky (5 Guys Named Moe) and Joe Becker (KGW-TV Sports) put their heads together to form a new country/rock band. Shortly thereafter, they were introduced to Rebecca Brown, a powerful country and blues singer who has sung with the likes of Body & Soul & Jaybird Koder. Combine Rebecca’s amazing stage presence, vocals and dance talent with a lineup of musicians and dancers with stage experience, and you get a show stopping, Vegas style country band!

New Art DisplayA revolving art display is now in place in the port lobby with original work from Camas photographer Mitch Hammontree. Officially beginning in April 2012, the port now hosts a rotating showcase of work from local artists. Come down to the port to see the artwork or submit a request to showcase your own. The submission process is easy and open to all residents of Southwest Washington with plans to feature artwork from local schools, painters, photographers and more. The art display wall consists of 5 floating shelves along the north wall that allows participants to proudly display their creations for up to three months. Going DigitalIt’s a trend happening across America as business executives and elected officials swap paper for tablet computers, smartphones and laptops. Recently, our own commissioners followed suit and traded in their paper binders for Apple iPads®, embracing the digital realm with services via the network cloud. This change speeds delivery of documents, reduces paper usage and makes available new ways to digitally interact with port constituents. The use of these tools will enable the port to be more efficient with time and resources.

Want to know more about the Port?Last year the port installed an LCD screen in the lobby to present a variety of presentations. Our goal is to educate the visiting public about the port and to feature the many opportunities we have to offer for businesses and recreation enthusiasts. We began with a history lesson on the port, a showcase of commissioners that have served from 1935 forward. Next, was a pictorial story of the 2005 Capt. Clark Park dedication, followed by slides of port properties and staff members over many years. Another presentation with animated graphics takes you through a virtual tour of the port’s website. The current presentation features the three parks owned by the port: Capt. Clark Park, Parker’s Landing, and Marina Park. The staff is busily creating new presentations as the port progresses forward so be sure and stop by our lobby to see the ‘latest attractions.’

Big River DistributorsA welcome sign of economic growth in the port’s industrial park is the addition of new tenants like Big River Distributors. In January, the company leased warehouse and office space in Bldg. 8 for their beer and wine storage and distribution center. Big River Distributors is owned by Cliff Samodurov and Adam Corey two local entrepreneurs who are excited to be doing business in their hometown. We look forward to helping with additional space as their business grows.

2012 Community ReportProviding a snapshot of current financial accounting, the port’s annual business report to the community discloses in detail how property taxes are used to invest in projects to bring jobs to the community. The focus of this year’s report is the abundance of recreational activities promoted by the port as part of its mission to enhance the quality of life for our community. Emergency Drill – planned at Grove Field Airport for June

In 2011, a practice drill involving a staged hazardous materials spill was conducted in a structure at the Industrial Park as part of the port’s pro-active safety program. This year, a mock emergency drill will be carried out at Grove Field Airport and involves East County Fire & Rescue, Camas Fire and Police, and Clark County Sheriff’s Office, as well as pilots at the airport. This exercise will have port’s maintenance staff on site, while other staff practice communication procedures with emergency personnel and resources from their base at the port’s main office. Results of this second drill will be shared in the July issue of The Port News.

Steigerwald Commerce Center UpdateIn 2008, as the current Industrial Park was nearing maximum build-out, the port commission initiated plans to develop 120+ acres of land to the east, now known as the Steigerwald Commerce Center.

In February 2010, Draft Development Standards for Steigerwald Commerce Center were completed.

In March 2010, groundwater monitoring was initiated to determine the exact location of wetlands over the entire site. During this process, the port learned that the Gibbons Creek diversion structure designed and installed by the Army Corps of Engineers has failed to accomplish the intended goal of conveying excess stormwater runoff to Steigerwald Lake and, instead, the excess is being processed through the port’s pump station. The Corps is working on a solution; however, it has recently determined that the excess runoff being diverted through the pump station does not negatively impact the station’s ability to handle additional runoff created by future development.

With these assurances, the port has begun work on preliminary engineering and construction services with the consulting firm of MacKay & Sposito, Inc. A draft site plan has been developed with proposed streets and various lot sizes which illustrates potential maximum flexibility for future tenants’ needs. Next steps will include discussions with the City of Washougal and development of a Master Plan and Development Agreement.

$1.5 Million Earmarked for PortEarly in 2012, the port submitted a future infrastructure project to be considered as part of the state’s budget for a grant under the “Jobs Bond Package.” In April, the port was notified that the capital budget had been approved and included a $1.5 million grant for the Phase I development of the Steigerwald Commerce Center. “Thanks to the support of legislators from the 18th District as well as surrounding districts,” said Executive Director Ripp, “the port’s economic development efforts will materialize into tangible, market-ready, job-producing results that much sooner.”

“The port’s goal to market a range of smaller, mid-size and larger lots will enable us to offer something that’s not available elsewhere in Clark County,” said David Ripp, port executive director. “We’d like to be putting a shovel in the ground on Phase 1 by August, so the process must keep moving forward.”
