locals understand from having been at Battle Rock Park many times but for out of towners this should be quite a treat.

The Snack ShopBy Evan Kramer

On the road again with Rick and Evan with our destination this time being the little unincorporated town of Orick along Highway 101 in Humboldt County. I had tried out the Snack Shop in Orick earlier this summer and it is what I call a “keeper”. This means go back for more and I wanted to introduce Rick to the small hamburger stand adjacent to Orick’s video and junk store. The Snack Shack has no bathrooms and only a few picnic tables to eat your food on, but what they do have is an excellent cheeseburger. They use good quality meat and cook all food to order. The Snack Shack has a sign welcoming bikers but the day we were there it was just us and several other Oregonians arriving in cars and trucks.

Sad to say but Cliff and Jackie Pierce who own the Snack Shack have sold it after running it for 14 years and will vacate the business after October 31 of this year. Cliff said they want to move to the Southern Oregon Coast so I will forward him some real estate information. He thinks the Snack Shack has been in Orrick since the mid 1950’s. It is attached to the video and odds and ends store but is an independent business unto itself.

We did a little exploring after eating and found the Orrick Inn just to the south of the Snack Shack. This building was built in 1922 and is in very poor condition but is now being restored though the process should take quite a while. It’s a potentially beautiful two story wooden building and just needs a loving hand or hands. The residential neighborhood in back of the Snack Shack yielded up a working 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk in someone’s front yard and this one was working and being used.

Orick has plenty of traffic going through it on Highway 101 or the Redwood Highway. The town has quite a few

wood carving shops to beckon tourists and a few other restaurants including the Palm and the Lumberjack and an out of business movie theater with apartments on the second level. Highway 101 is one lane in each direction with a continuous left turn lane and adequate areas for bicycles on the side. It is not an incorporated city so has no police department, city hall nor a school though it does have a fire department. Orick is an interesting place with a lot of history including once being the home to several timber mills and dairies. Now it is home to the oversized Redwood National Parks building known as the South Operations Center or SOC.

After eating and ogling cars and abandoned gas stations we drove north back to the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and instead of taking Highway 101 as we did going south we took the Newton B. Drury scenic parkway and drove through Prairie Creek Redwood State Park, home to several large stands of redwood trees

Pacific High Golf ScrambleThe Third Annual Pacific High School Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, August 28, at Bandon Crossings Golf Course. The scramble will begin with a 1:00pm Shotgun start with a dinner and awards ceremony to follow, also at Bandon Crossings Golf Course.

For the past three years, Pacific High School has used this scramble as the main fundraising event for athletic teams throughout the school year. All proceeds from this event benefit all sports programs at Pacific. Currently the sports that benefit from your donation are soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, track and golf. We have been able to provide our athletics with fundamental equipment needs, transportation, and uniforms with the proceeds from the scramble tournament. These items could not have been purchased or funded without your support.

and miles of hiking trails. When we got to the end of by Drury Bypass instead of heading to Highway 101 we veered to the left and took the Coastal Drive and continued to an overlook above the south side of the Klamath River. Neither of us had even seen where the Klamath River enters the ocean so that was our second goal of the day. We then drove down alongside the river to where Highway 169 used to cross the Klamath at the Douglas Memorial Bridge but this concrete span bridge was destroyed in the 1964 flood. all that is left is a 50 foot section on the west side. This is now a viewing deck but at least the two symbols of Klamath – the Grizzlies still stand sentinel on the river. From there it is a short hop to Highway 101 and we went on the other side of the highway to check out the Golden Bear’s Casino which is no longer in business. We don’t know the history of the casino and it never included a hotel or was very large but it was promoted by a huge sign visible for distances on 101 but on Sunday the casino parking lot was empty and weeds grew at the entrance.

We also wanted to see the settlement of Requa, as it is known now, though when it was a large Yurok village it was known a Req-woi. For a brief period it became a major cannery town but eventually commercial fishing of salmon was outlawed. Today one of the main historical elements left is the Requa Inn but this is the Klamath River and fishing is still a major activity on this river. The boat launch area was busy although the fishing boats stayed within the Klamath lagoon in back of the dunes. There is an even better view of the mouth of the Klamath River from the Requa overlook but this time of year it doesn’t look so intimidating.

There is an excellent book that covers this region from the Jedediah Smith Redwoods down to Orick called “Redwood National and State Parks Tales, Trails and Auto Tours by Jerry and Gisella Rohde with illustrations by Larry Eifert and if you love the redwoods like I do and enjoy hiking in them and auto touring this book is a must. Best touring book I’ve ever read.

School Board MeetingThe Port Orford Langlois School Board meets on Monday, August 9, 7:00pm, in the library room at Pacific High School. All school board meetings will now be held at Pacific.

Search and Rescue SuccessfulOn 7-28-2010 at approximately 5:13 p.m., 73 year old William Cox was located and rescued. Mr. Cox was found near the end of Forest Service Spur Road 393, off of the main 5210 road in the sixes area. He was found about a half mile away from the point he was last seen on Sunday the 25th. Mr. Cox was found in an extremely dense and steep patch of forest near a camp spot he had carved out sometime Monday.

Mr. Cox was located by a search team comprised largely of family members assigned to re-search that area. It had been searched on Tuesday by family members and SAR teams but due to the steep terrain it was deemed we needed to try again. Once located, Mr. Cox was carried out on a stokes-litter to the nearest clearing where a U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to, and a USCG rescue swimmer was lowered into the clearing and Mr. Cox was secured and evacuated to a hospital to North Bend for medical care.

CORSAR (California-Oregon Search & Rescue) Searchers from Curry, Coos, Del Norte, Douglas, Josephine, and Jackson Counties participated in the 3-day search for Mr. Cox, including five separate K9 teams. Special thanks to the K9 teams and SAR members for providing key indicators that ultimately

proved correct in pointing to the area where Cox was found.

Family members and friends of Mr. Cox participated each day and were invaluable to the search effort, providing detailed information about the South Fork Smith River drainage area. They were there from the start and never gave up hope of finding Mr. Cox alive.

Hundreds of volunteer hours were spent by search teams combing some of the steepest and unforgiving terrain in Curry County. It is also some of most beautiful country in Curry County and explains why Mr. Cox and his party were there in the first place. Members of other SAR teams stated it was the roughest area they had ever been in.

Sheriff John Bishop would like to remind everyone who travels or recreates in our County to plan carefully before entering these wild and scenic areas and bring all necessary gear to survive for extended periods of time should mishap occur. Portable radios and global positioning systems (GPS) should be carried into these remote regions for emergency situations. If stranded or lost stay together with other party members and stay close to water so that you can stay hydrated.

In steep drainages like these the best travel areas are usually at the very top and very bottom, so if it is dangerously difficult to climb out, as it was for Mr.

Cox in this situation, the best thing to do is stay down at the bottom where search teams will have the best chance to travel and find you. The water sources may also provide the only spots visible from the air in densely forested areas like this one.

Lack of water became a serious problem for Mr. Cox. In his attempt to climb out of the drainage he traveled well away from the abundant water below then ran out when he was he became stuck. When located, Mr. Cox was dehydrated and very weak, the lack of water was a huge threat to his survival.

Sheriff Bishop wants to thank everyone that assisted in this search. There many members who put their lives on hold and risked injury to look for Mr. Cox. The core members of Curry County SAR deserve a lot of credit for this very difficult search. The Curry County Search & Rescue Team is always looking for fit and able volunteers with time to devote to search and rescue operations. If interested, please contact Lt. John Ward at 541-247-3320 or 541-247-3242.

Senior Center NewsWell, we did it again ... our monthly Senior Center meeting on Tuesday July 27. There were a few more of us in attendance, but not enough. I don’t know if the good weather had more of you out playing soccer or if some of you went back into the Witness Protection Program but we missed you and you missed a good meeting and a great lunch by Wendy Thomas.

Instead of one guest speaker this month we had a number of members present “mini-topics” such as nutrition and certain tax problems in the new Health

Care Act. These are interesting subjects for all ages.

Now, things to look forward to. Sunday August 8 is our Community Breakfast (that means everybody is invited!) from 8:00am to noon featuring Sonja’s Finest French Toast, link sausages, waffles, mixed-up eggs, coffee, tea and orange juice all for the low, low $6 per adult and $3 per little person.

Then on Saturday August14 at Humbug Mountain from 11am to 3 pm will be our annual picnic. Call the Center for details.

And then on Sunday August 22nd we can all go to the Sprague Theater in Bandon to see the 1pm matinee presentation of My Fair Lady. Tickets are $10 in advance, reservations are required and car - pooling from the Center is available.

And still more “then”. On Tuesday August 31st will be our next member meeting and luncheon.

Sandwiched in among all of these fun things don’t forget to stop in on Tuesday mornings to have your blood pressure taken.

Finally -- last -- our Rummage Sale is on Saturday and Sunday of the Labor Day Weekend. We need lots of good Rummage and some help. Please call Rosie at 541-332-1230 to donate either or both.

Whew – The End

Letter to the Editor,Rebuttal to Ted Burdett

Mr. Burdett, our readers will decide which of us had the facts, before voicing an opinion. I’m wondering sir, if you really read any of the articles written over the past month, or the report by an outside accounting firm. Based on your comments, I’m not really sure. What I am sure of, Mr. Burdett, many of our readers have, and they know the facts better than you. Please, don’t listen to other people, do your homework. Go back and re-read the articles slowly, the truth is there.

Let’s take if from the top. The fact that Ms. Brock and 5 other counties are not following the Oregon Revised Statues doesn’t make it right. It means that no one is reading the Standard Operation Procedures, (Sop’s), that govern the way any department is to be run. Why is our county and state in the poor financial condition they’re in? Is it possible not everyone is on the same page? We are talking about our survival sir, our ability to pay our bills. You would understand this concept if you owned a business and responsible for the livelihood of others. I did, and I do.

That’s the one point we can both agree, a formal education is not always the

answer. I know; I barely finished high school. On the other hand, I’m a retired business consultant and paralegal with over 30 years experience. I was a bonded and insured registered advisor. I developed and sold 6 businesses in my 50 year career, 3 of which are still alive today. Success depended on my ability to read and understand the principals of each business whether they were to be successful or prone to fail.

But here’s where we disagree. You’re telling the citizens of this county that Ms. Brock meets the qualifications set forth by the state and the County. There are no state or county qualifications. Unless you’re referring to paying the required amount or money to get on the ballot and the gathering of names, then yes, she qualified. Does that mean you would hire Ms. Brock to manage your money? You say you’re educated, and an educator, and yet you want me to believe you don’t know the difference between education and experience. I’m not sure if the educated and uneducated citizens of our community will agree with you sir. Once again, we are talking about money, our money.

Have someone read my letter to you again sir. The complaint wasn’t just aimed at Ms. Brock. It included the commissioners, past and present for not adhering to the ORS, a must in any profession. And just for the record. Mr.

City Council MeetingThe Port Orford City Council meets on Thursday, August 5, 3:30pm, in the city hall council chambers.

The Common Good, Inc. What great support Shoes for Kids is having this year. They have managed to raise enough money to continue the good work the team does for the youth of our area. Now it’s time to work on The Common Good, Inc. Emergency Food Pantry. Once again our shelves are emptying and donations are low. Here’s what we need in the way of canned goods:

SoupsPork & Beans, & ChiliVegetables & FruitsCanned Meats & FishPasta Sauces

Waddle did not recruit me for the CCBC. Mr. Gary Doran, the ex mayor of Port Orford did, in the latter part of 08. I had already agreed to take Gary’s place when Mr. Waddle called me the early part of 09. My resume was accepted by all 3 commissioners. I often joke with Gary, that I’m still waiting to get even.

Phil Colozzi

Letter to the EditorContinued from Page 6

We have chosen not to do a food drive, but let our citizen’s drop off what they can. The Common Good, Inc. is open Wednesdays from 10-12 and 1-3. There are also drop off sites for canned food at the local churches, Port Orford Senior Center and Sterling Bank. Please make sure your food item is date friendly. Because of the tight food situation

statewide, we can only give out one emergency food box per client family per month. Any cash donations can be dropped off at Chetco Federal Credit Union, Sterling Bank and The Common Good, Inc., PO Box 564, Port Orford OR 97465.

Thank You for maintaining the high quality of clothing & misc. donations this summer. We have had very little garbage and very happy clients. We should start thinking about winter and collecting those warm fuzzy items. We are also in need of non-food pantry items such as paper towels, toilet paper and plastic grocery bags. The Common Good, Inc. is a non-profit, totally volunteer managed, equal opportunity provider. We may be running low on food, but we will share what we have. Thank You for your support.

Letter to the Editor,A recent Letter to the Editor from Mr. Ted Burdett did anything BUT “get a few things out in the clear “. He seems to be attempting some type of defense for a “Treasurer Izzy Brock”. He says “let’s take a look at the issues”, but he never does it. Instead, he mounts an at-tack on a Mr. Waddle, a Mr. Rhoades, and a Mr. Colozzi. He wastes valuable time and space attempting to link sex-ual harassment charges, interpretation

of laws, construction permits, elitism, and the importance of college degrees to form a defense of the alleged malfea-sance of the County Treasurer.

If he wishes to attempt to defend he might start with listing the charges and then answering them in some sort of or-der. Casting aspersions and innuendos only muddies the waters and weakens his position. He states that Mr. Colozzi wipes Mr. Waddle’s nose, but would

he like anyone to suggest what it is he might do for Treasurer Brock?

He states that no less than 5 counties in Oregon use the same treasury practices. Are there only 5 counties in Oregon? What do the other counties do? Are they wrong and the 5 right? or vice versa?

What does the competency of 99% of the people of Curry County have to do with anything? And on, and on, and on.

Congratulations Mr. Burdett, on being selected the Oregon Teacher of the Year by the Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars ... but what does that have to do with Treasurer Brock?

With respect to your comments regard-ing the anatomy of horses and common sense, I have reread your entire paper twice and must admit that you, sir, are the essence of that lesson.

Respectfully

Jim Hajek

Redfish Rocks Teamby Briana Goodwin

As you are most likely aware, the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve & Marine Protected Area (MPA) was established in July 2009, and the regulations will take effect on June 30, 2011. The purpose of the Reserve is to provide an additional tool to help protect, sustain, or restore the nearshore marine ecosystem, its habitats, and species.

To oversee the implementation and success of the Reserve & MPA the Redfish Rocks Community Team was formed through an open application process. The Team is made of a diverse group of citizens, including fishermen, business owners, and elected officials. The purpose of the Community Team is to collaborate and develop recommendations for Redfish Rocks, considering biological and socioeconomic information and to serve as liaisons to the community on matters regarding Redfish Rocks. Each member of the Community Team is on at least one of four (4) Work Groups as described below:

The Biological Science Working Group will begin collecting scientific data this summer and is developing a long term monitoring plan for Redfish Rocks.

The Socioeconomic Working Group is dedicated to identifying and

implementing new business and tourism opportunities that may arise from the implementation of the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve.

The Outreach & Education Working Group seeks to promote an understanding of and support for Redfish Rocks and the scientific work focused on the Reserve and MPA.

The Enforcement & Compliance Working Group is creating strategies to make it easier to comply with the regulations for Redfish Rocks.

The meetings of the Redfish Rocks Community Team are open to the public and are held the first Monday of every month at 6:00 pm at City Hall. You are cordially invited to attend any of these meetings and to serve as a member on one of the Working Groups.

If you have any questions or would like to get involved, please contact Briana Goodwin, Community Team Staff, at (541) 332-0627 or [email protected]. You can also visit our page on the State’s website: www.oregonocean.info/redfishrocks.

Legislators Urge ProtectionsRepresentatives Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Mike Thompson (D-CA) today sent a letter to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA) administrator, Jane Lubchenco, asking the agency to make changes to a forthcoming West Coast fishing plan to protect fishermen and coastal communities. DeFazio and Thompson believe if the fishing plan goes forward as designed, fishing families and coastal communities in southern Oregon and northern California could be negatively impacted.

The new fishing plan is being designed by the Pacific Fishery Management Council but must be approved by Dr. Lubchenco’s agency before being implemented by January, 2011. The plan calls for “rationalizing” the West Coast trawl groundfishery, which consists of over 90 species such as Pacific cod, whiting, and rockfish. The rationalization of the trawl fishery, commonly called a “catch share” program, would establish a system by which fishing privileges are given to businesses and individuals as private rights, who are then allowed to trade, buy, or sell these rights as they see fit. Proponents of the fishing plan say a catch share program would improve efficiency and overcapacity of the West Coast groundfishery. DeFazio and Thompson argue a catch share program could lead to market consolidation,

Fifth ThursdaysThe Rotary club meets weekly on Thursday noon for regular meetings, but when there is a fifth Thursday in the month, Rotarians do something purely for fun and enjoy each others’ fellowship. Since July had five Thursdays, fellowship even planner Karen Auborn invited the club to enjoy the Oregon Coast Lab Band’s Concert in the Park on Sunday. A number of Rotarians joined members of the Point Orford Heritage Society, who sponsored the event, as well as locals and visitors, on the lawn of the Heads Park by the museum. Past Fifth Thursday club events have included golf outings, a bowling trip, an evening at the Game Park, progressive dinners, etc. Photos www.FaceBook.com/PortOrfordRotary.

manipulation, and the loss of fishing jobs.

“This is just another attempt by misguided environmental groups to use a ‘market-based’ solution to solve an ecological challenge-overfishing and bycatch in this case,” DeFazio said. “Just as I opposed a cap-and-trade system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fought deregulation of the energy sector in the west, I am not convinced catch shares are the silver bullet proponents make them out to be. Before moving forward, we should make sure we have done everything we can to protect Oregon fishing families and coastal communities. I’m not convinced NOAA has done that.”

“As currently proposed, this catch share program not only causes undue stress on our groundfish fishermen and their families, but the added costs, including those for fisheries observers, could cripple the infrastructure of the entire fishing industry along California and Oregon,” said Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA).

If NOAA is unable or unwilling to address the concerns DeFazio and

Thompson raise in their letter, they’ve asked Dr. Lubchenco to remand the plan back to the Pacific Fishery Management Council with a directive to make changes. Final rules and regulations for the West Coast catch share program could be finished as early as August. The final plan would go into effect in January 2011.

Back by popular demand-- Sir ReadAlot on Saturday August 14 at 1pm in the Port Orford Community Center. Rickie Birran uses the dramatic arts to encourage, enlighten, and entertain. This is a wonderful program that everyone in the family will enjoy. It’s funny and fun, and for those who love literature, it’s a special treat.

Letter to the editor,If anyone thinks that the effort to reauthorize the Secure Rural Schools and Communities Self-Determination Act (federal forest, counties and schools and O&C ) funding is not a top priority for Curry County here is a success story. War Veteran William Cox went off the trail on Sixes River because of an over weight back pack to get around a log pile. He became lost. Thanks to the efforts of the Curry County Sheriff Department and Curry County Search and Rescue he was found after several nights out. Curry County Search and Rescue is funded by donations and the Secure Rural Schools and Communities funding that 39 states are working to get reauthorized in 2012. Without this funding Curry County Search and Rescue will not have funds for sustained searches. Volunteers and 22,000 citizens of Curry County do not have enough money to keep our county government services going when 70% of our lands are federal owned and when we have the highest percentage of state parks on our coast. This is why I will continue to work for this funding! William Cox will be voting in the next election.

Have a great summer!

Lucie La Bonte
