Smederevo (Serbian Cyrillic: Смедерево, is a city on the right bank of the rkm 1116 of the Danube river, about 45 kilometres (28 miles) downstream of the capital Belgrade.

The city has a population of 64,105, and 108,209 people live in its administrative area.

The City was founded in the 1st century BC by Roman Empire, called Vinceia.

The modern city traces its roots back to the late Medieval in the 15th century when the fortified city of Smederevo was the capital of the last independent Serbian state before the Ottoman conquest.

Smederevo city is one of the largest cities – fortress not only in Serbia but in Europe. The fortress was built in the form of irregular triangle. Each side has its length over 500m and internal space inside the walls is more then 10 hectares.Smederevo city built a serbian despot Djuradj Brankovic in year 1430.The history of Smederevo as a military fortress is completed. As defined by the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region and the Tourism Development Strategy of the Republic of Serbia, the Republic of Serbia is fully focused on evaluating tourist destinations on the Danube, the Sava and the Tisa rivers;

In order to enlarge the scope of tourism offer, a network of passenger terminals open to international traffic has been determined. Along with Belgrade and Novi Sad this network of passenger terminals also predicts:

The Danube River : Apatin, Backa Palanka, Sremski Karlovci, Smederevo (at the current 'Old Port' site), Kostolac, Veliko Gradiste, Golubac, Lepenski Vir, Kladovo and Negotin;

The Sava River : Sremska Mitrovica and Sabac

The Tisa River : Kaniza, Senta, Becej and Titel.

BASIS FOR CONSIDERATION OF INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER TERMINAL CAPACITY IN SMEDEREVO:

The immediate vicinity of Belgrade and the Archaeological Park Viminacium.

VILLA "Golden Hill", better known as a summer house Obrenovic dynasty, is located at 4 kilometers from the center of town Plavinac (old road Smederevo-Belgrade).

The famous royal wineyards in Smederevo.

Connection of international highway E75, E70, as well as the nearby international airport „Nikola Tesla“, and „Kovin Airport“.

Port has the possibility to become the main factor of linking the City as the first gate to the touristic market

The Old Port is in the center of the town, close to a protected historical site – the Smederevo Fortress. After an assessment of the site, only an international passenger terminal is planned to be built.The handling equipment from the Old Port will be re-located to the New Port site.

BASIS FOR CONSIDERATION INTERNATIONAL CARGO TERMINAL SMEDEREVO

Port has the possibility to become the main factor of linking the City of Smederevo with other cities of the Danube countries.

The aim is to become Smederevo as one of the stops on the fairway of the Danube from the Black Sea and the river Rhine and the North Sea under a new changed circumstances, primarily technological and organizational modern and at the new location.

Planed area has good connections with the main road and rail highways.

THE INVESTMENT IN INTERNATIONAL CARGO TERMINAL GENERALLY REFERS TO INVESTMENTS IN:

A priority is to invest in the construction of an operational railway track on the New Port quay and in its connection to the siding within the Steel Plant complex.

Expanding the port area and building new terminals for dangerous goods, general cargo, bulk cargo and containers.

The investment required for the port infrastructure is estimated at 22.9 million euros, and for the superstructure at 34.3 million euros.
