IT was smiles all round when the new children’s playground Livvi’s Place was officially opened at Westport Park in Port Macquarie on Tuesday.

Dozens of children helped countdown to the official ribbon cutting impatiently, keen to expe-rience all the exciting new play equipment tanta-lisingly just out of reach beyond the ribbon.

“Yay!” was the unanimous cheer when the ribbon was cut and they were allowed in.

And who can blame them?Designed to be all-inclusive, the playground

features so many inviting choices that the main problem is which one to try first.

The carousel was near the top of the list, but the water feature was also a big hit, as were the tree house, nature play, boat and new swings.

The result of more than two years of hard work, the playground was a joint project between Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, national char-ity Touched by Olivia and the local community.

Council contributed $130,000 towards the construction and obtained a further $50,000 in funding and the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation also generously donated $50,000.

Mayor Peter Besseling praised council staff for their hard work and dedication to the project. He also thanked the Touched By Olivia Founda-tion for their input, which included designing the space, painting and planting.

“Livvi’s Place removes barriers, improves health and happiness and most importantly, allows all children no matter what their ability, to have fun which is a great outcome,” the mayor said.

Touched by Olivia’s Bec Ho said they were thrilled to celebrate at such a beautiful spot with a great community.

THE WESTPORT CLUB'S

SUMMER is here – and if the weather forecast-ers are right an El Nino weather pattern is com-ing into play, so the current dry conditions will continue.

This means the Hastings water supplies will come under increasing pressure and serves as a constant reminder of the need to conserve water.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council staff manned a stand outside the Glasshouse on Mon-day - appropriately the first day of summer - to promote the water-conservation message and to remind residents that we are currently on level 3 water restrictions.

Staff talked to dozens of home owners about how to reduce their water consumption - handing out fridge magnets and other free water-saving devices such as hose nozzles. A raised planter-bed of drought-tolerant plants that can be pur-chased from Port Macquarie Landcare for only $1 a plant, was also part of the display.

According to Andrew Doig, group manager wa-ter and sewer at Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, the Port Macquarie area has received only half of its annual average rainfall so far this year.

“This lack of serious rain is being compound-ed because our data is showing people are using more water than normal,” he said.

“During November, Hastings residents having been using an average of 246 litres per person a day. In 2012 the average was 209 l/per person/day. This has prompted a renewed effort to re-mind the community to be aware of the need to

reduce the amount of water we are using.”The Hastings is currently on level 3 water

restrictions and the combined storage level in the Port Macquarie and Cowarra Dams has now fallen to 74 per cent. If this drops to 70 per cent, then level 4 water restrictions will kick in, which no one wants to see.

Under Level 3 restrictions, sprinklers and fixed hoses are banned. Residents are only per-mitted to use one hand-held hose for a maximum of one hour in two 30-minute sessions (6.30am-7am and 6pm-6.30pm) every second day of the week ‘odds and evens’ days matching your house number. (eg. odd house numbers can water on odd days of the month).

“With the summer holidays almost upon us, it is really important that local residents and holi-day-makers alike to embrace the save-water mes-sage,” Mr Doig said.

Council staff will be visiting motels and the council water mascot, Whizzy the Waterdrop, will be out and about over coming months pro-moting water conservation at the beach and hand-ing out water-saving tips, such as brushing (not washing) the sand off your feet or surfboard and electing not to have your towels and bed linen changed daily.

Whizzy’s main message is “Every drop counts!”

For more information about level 3 restric-tions phone 6581 8111 or visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au

TOP Australian television journalist Allison Langdon will be heading back to Wauchope later this week to catch up with her family, who live in King Creek.

And you are invited to say hello and hear some of the highlights of her amazing career and her insights into achieving success while remaining true to yourself.

Best known for her regular stories on 60 Minutes on Sunday nights – Allison will also be the guest speaker at the Hasting Co-op’s 98th birthday celebrations on Friday at the Depart-ment Store at 10am, which are open to the pub-lic.

For Allison, it’s all part of giving back to the community where she grew up.

“It’s such a close community in Wauchope - I always like giving back,” she said.

“I have such fond memories of growing up in Wauchope – the primary school and the high school. I think my childhood in Wauchope

helped me determine my path and what I did later in life.”

While she will talk about some of her most memorable stories, she also wants to talk about relationships, and the people she has worked with who have helped shape her outlook on work and life.

“I sat next to Peter Harvey in the newsroom for eight years. He was truly amazing and he has helped shape who I am,” she said.

She also hopes to inspire people and will be giving a talk to students at both her old schools.

“I think sometimes when we grow up outside one of the major cities we think some things are not possible,” Allison said.

“Well anything is. I had no connections in television or media and just worked hard. That is my main message. If you put your mind to it anything is possible. I hope if nothing else I might inspire a few kids to dream and aim high.”

THREE new Fisheries patrol vessels have been launched – the latest in the war against illegal fishing activity along the NSW coast.

Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams launched the three new vessels on Tuesday.

The three high-speed vessels will be based at Port Macquarie, Tuncurry and Batemans Bay and will enable Department of Primary Indus-tries’ fisheries officers to conduct patrols in off-shore, coastal and estuarine waterways.

“Here on the Mid North Coast, the purpose-built 6.1-metre vessel will be stationed in the Hastings fisheries district,” Ms Hodgkinson said at the Port Macquarie launch.

“This new vessel will patrol the waters of the north coast covering Port Macquarie, Laurieton and South West Rocks to detect and deter any-one engaged in illegal fishing activity.

“These vessels have been fitted with the lat-est state-of-the-art navigation technology for accurate recording of offence locations at sea and have many enhanced safety features.

“Each of the three vessels features a twin Suzuki 90-hp engine that is fuel efficient and provides high-speed capacity for ocean patrols.

“Fisheries officers will utilise the vessel in ocean trawl, ocean trap and line, rock lobster, ocean haul and recreational fisheries to conduct compliance checks and surveillance opera-tions.”

Be preparedTHE Port Macquarie Group of Dying with Dignity NSW has an important message this festive season – be prepared and pre-pare an Advance Care Directive.

As Christmas and New Year approach, the number of people travelling increases exponentially. Unfortunately, so too do those who are killed and injured on our roads.

I write in the hope of influencing peo-ple to prepare an Advance Care Directive (ACD) which documents your wishes and beliefs about your preferences for medical treatment in anticipation of a time when you are unable to express those preferences because of serious injury or illness.

Unfortunately many in the commu-nity think that ACDs are only for “when I am older”, or in a nursing home. It is my personal belief that all adults over 18 years of age should have an ACD which is up-dated every few years so that it maintains currency.

An ACD is a legal document, and medical institutions or professionals who disregard a patient’s ACD can be held le-gally accountable. Your ACD can cover is-sues such as:• What life-sustaining measures are unac-

ceptable to you and in what scenarios (temporarily or permanently lost capac-ity/function)

• What level of functioning is unacceptable to you

• Under what circumstances you refuse re-suscitation

• Your religious/cultural beliefs that may

affect your health care and medical treat-ment

• Do you want to be artificially fed and hy-drated

It is empowering to make a clear plan that simply states our wishes to enable those caring for us to follow them through when necessary. Talk about it with your family members so that everyone is aware of what you want. Your ACD can nominate a substitute decision maker to make treat-ment decisions on your behalf. Reflective discussion in a non-crisis situation can pre-pare all involved.

So this Christmas give yourself and your family one of the best presents ever - be prepared, and prepare an Advance Care Directive.

Protecting marine parksI AM calling on the Baird government to get serious about protecting our precious marine parks.

The Greens want to keep our estuaries and oceans healthy by reducing pollution and conserving marine species so we have plenty of fish in the sea for future genera-tions to enjoy.

The river, beach and ocean, including three estuaries – Harrington, Camden Ha-ven and Hastings - are very important for the Port Macquarie electorate. Our biggest

Thumbs UpTO the Independent newspaper. Over the last year or so since the new management took over the paper, I find myself increasingly enjoying reading it. The variety and quality of the articles improves by the issue. And although I have a limited knowledge of politics, it does seem to be truly independent. I have only just discovered the e-paper version which is similar to the digital versions of the major newspapers, but without the cost! Congratulations on a fine local and free publication!

Thumbs UpTO the staff at Hastings Co-op IGA in Port Macquarie for the ever-friendly personalised service. It is a pleasure to shop there.

Thumbs UpTO mortgage broker Glenda Woolston for making the whole process of buying a new house a pleasurable one.

Thumbs UpTO local wildlife group FAWNA and their volunteers. It was great to read the front page story about helping the Casino orphaned flying foxes the other week. The empathy and care on the volunteer’s face was obvious to see.

Thumbs UpTO Port Macquarie Hastings Council for the major clean-up of the reserve in Crestwood at the back of the houses on Jonas Absalom Drive. It looks much better with the lantana poisoned and some of the scrub tidied up.

Thumbs UpTO the contractors who fixed up the Rocks Ferry Road reserve in Wauchope after major flood dam-age. Had a lovely barbecue there on Sunday with friends and it was great to see so many other fami-lies doing the same thing. This is definitely the jewel in Wauchope’s crown.

CHRISTOPHER Pyne is wrong. We don’t have a dysfunc-tional parliament, we have democracy in action.Democracy gives a representative of an electorate the right to exercise their conscience, and with the courage of their convictions speak out for what they believe is right. What we have now are representatives who follow the dictates of a few, unable to step out of line for fear of be-ing dis-endorsed, in some cases not even allowed a con-science vote on such issues as euthanasia or gay mar-riage.

The politician who stands out as having the fire to stand up for his convictions was Don Chipp, whose alternate party survived for years on his premise, “Keep the bas-tards honest”.

Britain, the home of democ-racy, is now encouraging people from all walks of life to stand up and be counted. In fact, the Westminster establishment has just been given a wake-up calling, having lost a “safe” seat by a big majority to an independent party.

No doubt I will be shot down in flames by alternate views, but that’s okay – that’s democracy.

By the way, whose name is on the plaque at the fourth pod of the base hospital, the politician who secured the funding or the present incumbent?

Patricia ByattWauchope

TO the person who wrote in giving the Independent a thumbs down for publishing trivial thumbs ups and thumbs downs. I love reading the column and it always puts a smile on my face. If you don’t like it, here’s an idea – don’t read it!

industry is tourism and the pristine cleanli-ness of our waters is a number one priority. Tourism here also depends on local high-quality fish in the restaurants and it stands to reason that this is a place for fishing.

We need the public to co-operate with keeping the waterways clean – after a day on the beach or on the river, take your rub-bish home with you, or better still, take more than your rubbish home with you. Yes, Clean Up Australia Day every day. Otherwise fish and birds are dying from mistaking plastic debris for food.

The Greens support marine parks be-cause they offer many short and long-term benefits to fishers, local residents, holiday makers, tourism operators, small business and the marine environment.

The best place to fish is next to a marine park. Why is that? Because inside the park the fish are safe to breed and grow in size and decent numbers.

It has been 18 months since the Liberal National government allowed recreational fishing in no-take sanctuary zones. This en-dangers our marine ecology and threatens

the sustainability of key industries such as tourism and commercial fishing. Science supports protected sanctuary zones and 93 per cent of people in NSW also support ma-rine sanctuaries.

The Greens call on Premier Baird to put science and overwhelming community opinion for no-take sanctuary zones before short term political deals with the Shooters and Fisher’s Party and immediately revoke the amnesty.

WESTPORT Park is set to explode this Saturday, December 6, from 6pm to 9pm with one of the biggest Christmas Carols events ever held in the Port/Hastings region.

An estimated 6000 people attended the two separate carols events in 2013 which have com-bined for this year’s massive celebrations.

“Based on community buzz and website activ-ity, we’re expecting anywhere between 7500 to 10,000 people,” a spokesperson for the organiser said.

“Our media partners - StarFM, 2MCFM, NBN and the Port Macquarie Independent - have played a huge role in getting the word out about this year’s event.”

In excess of $50,000 in prizes and giveaways including 2500 fun cards have been donated by more than 20 local and national sponsors who

have generously backed the annual event spear-headed by Grace Church and Coastside Church.

Children from across the region are participat-ing in a colouring-in competition, which will give three lucky winners from different age groups a $50 cash-for-Christmas prize.

In the first two weeks of November parents registered more than 2200 children for free fun cards valued at $15.50 each via the event website, portmacquariecarols.com

Carols, live music, jumping castles, ice cream, soft drinks and pizza will keep the kids enter-tained for hours. The fun will be capped off with a fireworks display around 9pm.

Prizes include free movies for a year from Ma-jestic Cinemas and a very generous commission-free home sale from Wiseberry Real Estate.

NSW will lose one seat in a planned redistribu-tion of federal electoral boundaries – but whether local seat Lyne’s boundaries will be impacted is unknown at this stage.

The acting electoral commissioner, Tom Rog-ers, announced the redistribution on Monday.

The redistribution was triggered following a determination on November 13 2014 of the num-ber of members of the House of Representatives each state and territory will be entitled to at the next federal general election.

“Based on population changes, it was deter-mined NSW would lose one seat, decreasing its entitlement to 47 House of Representatives seats at the next federal election,” Mr Rogers said.

The enrolment quota for the redistribution will be determined by dividing the number of electors enrolled in NSW by 47, which is the number of House of Representative seats that NSW will be entitled to at the next federal election.

An independent committee will be appointed to undertake the redistribution in NSW and the committee will be supported by a small secretariat of staff from the AEC.

The redistribution process provides opportuni-ties for individuals and organisations to propose where the electoral division boundaries could be located, or the name of an electoral division.

Members of the public will be invited to sub-mit their suggestions about the redistribution dur-ing April. Guidelines are available to assist peo-ple or organisations interested in submitting their suggestions.

An indicative timetable for the federal redistri-bution process in NSW is available at aec.gov.au/Electorates/Redistributions/2014/nsw/index.htm.

Further information about redistributions can be found at aec.gov.au/redistribution

Federal redistributions are also commencing in Western Australia and the ACT.

DELVE into the fascinating stories behind some of Australia’s most iconic photographs in Behind the Truth, a travelling photographic display at the Port Macquarie Library until Thursday, Decem-ber 11.

The display features 10 iconic images from the State Library of NSW’s unrivalled collec-tions that question the role of truth in photogra-phy.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council library manager Jim Maguire said the photographs on display capture Australian history in different ways across a variety of settings.

“One of the photos in the display is the iconic ‘Southern Sun in Sydney’ which celebrates the

arrival in Sydney of pioneer aviatrix Amy John-son, the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia,” Mr Maguire said.

“However, her plane The Jason, which features in the background of the image, crashed in Brisbane and she arrived in the Southern Sun with Charles Ulm, so the photograph is actually a montage of three images.”

Another photograph featured in the display is ‘Sunbaker’ by renowned Australian photogra-pher Max Dupain.

The display enables the public to get up close to some of Australia’s most famous images caught on film.

INSIDE COUNCIL

REBUILDING and strengthening financial sus-tainability has been the cornerstone of this council’s financial strategy from the day we took office in September of 2012.

Last month’s release of council’s annual re-port and financial statements confirms council has made significant strides in this area. Coun-cil ended the year with a budget surplus of $1.8 million, which is a great achievement. Further-more, after four months of the current financial year we remain on track to again end up in a balanced or even slight surplus position.

However, notwithstanding these excellent results, a dark cloud looms in the months and years ahead – one that is facing virtually every regional council in NSW and certainly every council on the North Coast of NSW.

We all have substantial infrastructure assets to be maintained and in some cases replaced (especially roads and bridges but also water and sewer infrastructure) and for councils such as ours, who are also expanding strongly, these needs come on top of the demand for increased infrastructure to service our growing population.

Council has seen this threat coming for some time and the main way that we are re-sponding - apart from working to secure state and federal government funding opportunities - is very much focused on being the best we can be. We are balancing our budgets, reporting detailed quarterly updates and working hard on several key programs involving significant change and organisational efficiency. These have been commented upon previously and include:

• A new innovative (category-based) purchasing strategy

• A review of each and every service that council performs

• A program to review and re-assess every asset that council owns and/or has respon-sibility for

• A review of council’s IT and commu-nications strategy and, in particular, the application of that strategy to process improvements and clearer, action-oriented reporting

Along with many other councils in NSW, PMHC is advanced in preparing our docu-mented analysis of how we will be “Fit For the Future” to move ahead in the 21st century. However, it’s already clear that while we are more advanced than most in our prepa-rations in general and our financial and efficiency initiatives in particular, the key missing element is access to increased sources of funds to address infrastructure replacement and replen-ishment. In all other respects, PMHC is likely to be shown to be relatively strong, progressive, professional and, indeed, “Fit For the Future.”

As I have noted in earlier reports to the community through this column, it is already clear that our council is a leaner and meaner organisation and, in particular, our financial management has broken free from its rigid past and is making great strides towards innovation and leadership.

HASTINGS employers and job seekers now have access to a local and affordable job-matching service.

The brainchild of Eather Recruitment, Quick-staff.com.au is an innovative job-matching ser-vice specifically tailored for the hospitality, tour-ism and retail industries.

For $10 – a fraction of the cost of posting on seek.com.au – employers can post a position-va-cant ad, Not only that, but the system will auto-matically search the CVs of registered job-seek-ers and forward the best match for their criteria.

Quickstaff.com.au. has been up and running for only a month, but already has over 2500 job seekers registered.

On Tuesday, staff from Eather Recruitment and software developers DNX Solutions, who developed the site for Eather Recruitment, met with Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Wil-liams at Mrs Williams’ office in Port Macquarie to unveil the new job website.

“This is a first for me – a cyber-space ribbon-cutting – I have always done it the traditional way,” Mrs Williams said with a laugh, as she clicked a mouse to cut the ribbon on the com-puter screen.

Eather Recruitment’s general manager, Ivana Agapiou, said the response to the soft launch had been overwhelmingly positive, and she was keen to hear more feedback now the site had been of-ficially launched.

“If it is successful as early indications are, we plan to expand it to other industries in the fu-ture,” she said.

Ms Agapiou stressed that – while quickstaff.com.au is expected to become extremely popular - it complements rather than replaces Eather Re-cruitment & Labour Hire’s other services.

“We are still offering all our other services as per normal,” she said.

For more information visit quickstaff.com.au or contact Eather Recruitment, which is located in the Northpoint building, 3/2 Murray Street, Port Macquarie ph 6583 8222, email [email protected]

WOMEN’S magazines are bringing joy to Port Macquarie residents in a way their publishers never thought possible.

The Port Macquarie Pink Ladies are trans-forming endless glossy magazine pages into stunning Christmas trees in their pursuit of extra funds for medical equipment at Port Macquarie Base Hospital.

Volunteer Chris Tait described the process of folding, gluing and decorating the Christmas trees as labour-intensive but added it was worth every minute to see the delight the trees brought to others.

The key requirements for a one-of-a-kind, Pink Ladies’ Christmas tree include up to six women’s magazines, a spare five or six hours to fold each and every page into a triangle, a hot-glue gun, four metres of tinsel and, of course, the all-important star tree-topper.

If all of that sounds like too much work, then the Pink Ladies will happily sell you one for $20, with every cent to go towards the hospital volunteers’ fundraising for medical equipment.

The Christmas trees are available for sale on the ground-floor level of the hospital.

LAKE Cathie’s new public school is almost finished and ready to open its doors – but they would like your help with one more major fundraiser.

The school is running a book drive outside Lake Cathie Woolworths on Saturday, December 6 between 8am and 2.30pm. Books from $3 will be available to purchase and donate to the school library.

School principal Jock Garven urged everyone to support the book drive by buying up big and said the purchase price of each book would include a spe-cially designed commemorative book-plate that would be placed inside each book donated.

“The names of all book purchasers will become part of community history as the new books will be read by thou-sands of students who pass through the doors of our library into the future,” Mr Garven said.

Books are also available for the public to purchase as great Christmas presents too. Scho-lastic Book Clubs have supplied a great range of quality books for the event, and the Teachers Mutual Bank has also made a generous donation towards the success of the day.

The Lake Cathie-Bonny Hills Lions Club will run a barbecue throughout the book drive day to support the P&C.

The school will continue to accept enrol-ments for 2015, especially during the orienta-tion program in January. The school will be open from Monday to Friday, January 5-9, for fami-lies to visit the school and see for themselves what is available. Orientation days will be held on January 7 and 20.

For information regarding enrolment at Lake Cathie Public School, call 6586 8060 or 0421 281 111.

Hanged if you do THERE I was, doing nothing in particular except thinking about my next holiday in the Pacific, with palm trees swaying in the breeze, clear blue water and saxon-haired maidens wearing almost nothing on the golden beaches.

Then a grandmother (my wife hates news re-ports that talk about grandmothers) walked up to me and said if I had done something terribly wrong would I be hanged or hung.

My first reaction was to say I hadn’t done anything terribly wrong for days, but I felt she wanted a different type of answer. I promised I would get back to her eventually.

People often want a precise explanation of some of our language quirks, and sometimes it is not possible to give a clear explanation.

Hanged and hung is a good example. We say a person is hanged but a picture is hung.

“Why is it so?” as the professor once said.If you put it down to usage, you would not be

too far from the truth. In almost every case the word would be hung,

but usage has determined that in the case of a person the word is hanged. A picture would be hung. You might have hung Christmas decora-tions. You might even have hung your head in shame if you had done something terribly wrong.

You could tell that grandmother the chances of suffering the extreme punishment are fairly slim these days in Australia, but no doubt she would find another country and persist with the question.

I discovered the woman in question had had a recent argument with her husband. He had told her of the distinction between hanged and hung, but she did not believe him and decided to ask me instead, thereby losing me another friend.

You could blame lawyers for the word hanged. They love hanging people out to dry.

The late Stephen Murray-Smith said hanged had hung around “probably” because of the legal profession’s conservatism. He used as an exam-ple “I’ll be hanged if I will”.

Actually, some lawyers are my best friends. They will do anything to help you – just remem-

ber to pay them.My big dictionary said hanged meant put to

death by hanging by the neck. It goes back to 1330 with a quote saying “Edrik was hanged on the toure”. Hung meant suspended, but the earli-est reference I could find for this word went back only to 1663.

It appears the correct word was hanged, but hung came into vogue much later. Think of simi-lar words, such as walked and talked. What are the chances that in years to come we might talk about people who “runned” instead of “ran”, but don’t take bets yet.

A person who has suffered death from hang-ing is a hangee. The executioner is a hanger.

Incidentally, Albert Pierrepoint is alleged to have hanged at least 400 people in Britain. Some people said more than 600. Then he became a publican.

A person who has had too much to drink is hungover. My big dictionary has found hun-dreds of expressions such as hang on, hang off (Shakespeare used this expression), hangdown and hangdog.

I like hangable, the term for one who should be hanged -- or a husband who comes home late for tea.

AUSTRALIAN Bureau of Statistics figures re-leased late last month show that residential con-struction became a key source of growth for sev-eral state economies during 2013/14, according to the Housing Industry Association.

HIA Economist Diwa Hopkins said the 2013/14 financial year recorded a strong and widespread recovery in residential construction, with six out the eight states and territories enjoy-ing increasing activity.

“These 2013/14 results follow quite a weak year for residential construction in 2012/13, when seven of the eight states and territories re-corded declining levels of activity,” Ms Hopkins said.

“Furthermore, where there were declines, closer inspection shows that in these instances the overall situation remains healthy. In Victoria, the decline in dwelling investment was a margin-al 0.1 per cent, with activity still at a near-record level. In the ACT, the decline was a non-trivial 9.0 per cent, but this is still more than 20 per cent higher than the average level during the 2000s.

“The results also show the important role that new home building and home renovating activity is starting to have for state economies.

“In previous years residential construction had been a drag on overall state economic activ-ity. In 2013/14, activity in residential construc-tion contributed to overall growth. In New South Wales, for example, where gross state product grew by 2.1 per cent, 0.2 percentage points of this were directly attributable to residential con-struction, Similar developments are evident in Queensland, Western Australia and Northern Territory.”

Ms Hopkins suggest that low and stable inter-est rate settings are having the desired effect on the housing market and demand for new home building. The latest HIA Economics forecasts [to be released this week] suggest that residential construction will experience further growth in 2014/15.

“There will still be quite a way to go if we are to make material progress in addressing en-trenched housing shortages. Policy makers need to understand that supply side constraints can only be held at bay by low interest rates for so long,” Ms Hopkins said.

Choosing the right builder

Choosing the right builder can help take the stress out of your project

MAKING updates and changes to your home is stressful enough, without having to worry about cowboy builders ruining your experience. A few simple questions before you hire someone could save you a lot of heartache.

A good builder takes away a lot of the po-tential for frustration and can turn your dream home experience into a bottomless money pit. We’ve all heard stories about dodgy builders who skip corners, shirk responsibility and are generally a pain to deal with.

But if you’ve never dealt with a builder be-fore how do you know where to start? Get the job done right the first time and help identify a potential cowboy builder by asking the follow-ing 10 questions.1. Are you a licensed builder? This is the first question you need to ask. Only ever work with licensed tradesmen. It may seem like an obvious point to reinforce but people ei-ther don’t ask or go with an unlicensed builder to save money. The results can be disastrous. Each state allows you to run a search on builders to check their licence, a simple Google search for ‘check a builder’s licence’ will get you started, please do it.2. Do you have Home Indemnity Insurance? You need to make sure your builder issues you a Certificate of Currency for Home Indemnity Insurance before you pay them anything. This covers you for financial loss should the builder die, become insolvent or do a runner.3. Are there any current or past building dis-

putes underway with the relevant building commission in your state? This will let you know about the builder’s gen-eral reliability and professionalism as well as the overall quality of their work.4. Have you ever been declared bankrupt? If your builder went belly-up at some point, it may mean a quick eject button on your project should they not have the financial wherewithal to finish the job. A bankrupt company may pull the plug without warning leaving you stuck with a half built house and searching for a builder willing to complete the job.5. Do you work in the same area I’ll be build-ing?It seems simple, yet many people don’t ask this question. Your builder may not be interested in building somewhere where they have to travel. The builder may also have to hire sub-contrac-tors he’s not familiar with and these people may not be up to standard.6. How long will the building maintenance period last?A builder agrees to perform building mainte-nance for a period of time after the property is handed over to you. Most experts recommend a six-month maintenance period for residential units and 12 to 18 months for commercial prop-erties.7. Who supervises the property construction? This is important because the construction supervisor is the guy who keeps everyone honest. When a supervisor is onsite, higher qual-

ity work is performed. Look into this person’s track record including their past experiences and duration at current employer.8. What about your trade base and its long-term employment?A consistent and reliable trade base is essential to making certain the job will be high quality come what may.9. Can we view your recently finished pro-jects?This is absolutely a no-brainer. You must be able to look at the builders’ recently completed work. This way you can see for yourself if the builder is doing the type of job you want for your home.

Check out the quality of products used and the work completed. If possible, speak to the builders’ clients and get references. This way you can get feedback about customer experience and satisfaction. You’ll be surprised about how forthcoming people are with details.10. What other projects will you be involved with while working on my house? You don’t want the builder to be biting off more than they can chew. The more they can concen-trate on your job, the fewer mistakes they will make and not to mention your project will be done faster. And finally . . . Remember, building a new home is a huge fi-nancial and emotional investment. Please take the extra time to do a thorough check on any prospective builder, their workmanship, refer-ences and credentials.

WITH interest rates sitting at record lows, and set to stay this way for the short term, an in-creasing number of borrowers are opting to fix their mortgage, causing demand for this loan type to hit an eight-month high.

That’s according to home loan expert Mort-gage Choice, who says recent data reveals fixed rate home loans accounted for 26.64 per cent of all loans written in October – up from 25.45 per cent recorded the month before.

Mortgage Choice spokesperson Jessica Darnbrough said with further cuts to the of-ficial cash rate in the coming months unlikely, borrowers seem intent on fixing their mort-gage while rates are low.

“No doubt borrowers’ appetite for fixed-rate loans has also been provoked by the ongo-ing competition for business among Australia’s lenders who continue to offer sharp pricing, sig-nificant mortgage discounts and other borrower incentives,” Ms Darnbrough said.

“It is pleasing to see that borrowers are tak-ing advantage of the current home loan market by actively responding to lender incentives and making informed home loan choices.”

Overall, fixed rates were particularly popu-lar in Queensland, with this loan type account-ing for 31.25 per cent of all loans written in this state in October – 3.51 per cent up on the month prior.

Despite a 1.19 per cent drop in demand month on month, variable rate home loans continue to prove most popular with borrow-ers overall, accounting for 73.36 per cent of all loans approved in October.

EXPECTANT mothers at Port Macquarie Base Hospital now have access to a revolutionary airbed - thanks to the Hastings Maternity Coali-tion.

The not-for-profit community group has fun-draised throughout the year, intent on buying a HoverTech pump - one of the Maternity Unit’s wish-list priorities.

This week, the Maternity Coalition presented nurse unit manager Sandra Eadie with $2000, making the wish a reality.

The pump will be used to inflate the Maternity Unit’s HoverJack air patient lift and HoverMatt transfer mattress. Both pieces of equipment use cushions of air to move patients easily, without staff lifting or straining, and with greater comfort for patients.

The group’s president, Leah Zvirzdinas, said the donation would be welcomed by patients and staff.

“It is with great pleasure that the Hastings Maternity Coalition has been able to contribute

$2000 to this essential equipment,” Ms Zvirzdi-nas said.

“The HoverMatt is a revolutionary transfer system. When inflated, it conforms to a patient’s body shape and they float on a cushion of air. The mattress absorbs 90 per cent of the patient’s weight, making it more comfortable for the per-son using it and much safer for staff when mov-ing patients.”

The pump will also be used with Maternity’s recently acquired HoverJack air patient lift.

It uses the same technology as the HoverMatt, but instead of moving patients laterally, the Hov-erJack lifts patients from floor level to a bed or stretcher height.

Mrs Eadie said the technology minimised risk of injury to mums, their unborn or new-born ba-bies and staff.

“We really are very fortunate to have the Ma-ternity Coalition working as hard as they do to help us offer the best care possible to pregnant women,” Mrs Eadie said.

Volunteers graduate with big smiles and plenty of compassion

Elizabeth Crampton has spent a lifetime look-ing after others – from remote Aboriginal com-munities in Western Australia to St Vincent de Paul’s Daughters of Charity in Israel.

So when the former nurse and midwife re-tired, it wasn’t surprising she discovered the Mid North Coast Local Health District’s Pallia-tive Care Volunteer program.

Ms Crampton was one of six people to grad-uate from a two-day training course for Pallia-tive Care Volunteers.

The five women and one man have diverse backgrounds, from health care and occupational therapy to small business and administration.

However, Palliative Care Volunteer Coordi-nator Judy Thomson said they all had one thing in common – compassion for local patients,

their carers and families.“Our volunteers are so important,” Ms

Thomson said. “They provide a wonderful ser-vice and are very much appreciated by health staff and the community.

“They really are wonderful, caring people.”The graduates were teamed up with exist-

ing volunteers and will continue to be mentored over the coming weeks as they put the theory of their training course into practice.

Ms Crampton moved to Port Macquarie in 2011 to be closer to family and discovered the Palliative Care Service.

“Volunteers are terribly important for the support of families and carers during what can be such a deeply emotional and draining time for them,” Ms Crampton said.

There are so many stand-out shows it is hard to single one out, but The Australian Ballet and the Bangarra Dance Theatre would have to rank right up there.

Others include Circus Oz, ERTHTM Di-nosaur Zoo, Macy Gray, Lior, Melbourne In-ternational Comedy Festival, London Haydn Quartet, The 26-Storey Treehouse and Bell Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Glasshouse performing arts program manag-er Belinda Gibson said this is the Glasshouse’s sixth annual theatre program.

“I think this is our best yet,” Ms Gibson said. “Next year is shaping up to be a huge year of entertainment. We have a stellar line-up of 21 touring productions, with over 30 shows.

“From what began as a small selection of pri-marily drama productions in 2009, the commu-nity can now enjoy an incredibly diverse range of shows traversing Grammy Award winners to classical music, ballet, contemporary dance, circus, children’s theatre, shadow puppetry, mu-sicals – and in 2015 we even have dinosaurs!

“It just goes to show that our community does have a great desire for quality entertain-

ment and are adventurous enough to try some-thing new.”

The Glasshouse launched its 2015 program at an exclusive Glasshouse Member event last Thursday night. Members were treated to an ex-clusive show preview, following which Glass-house 2015 memberships were placed on sale - enabling patrons to enjoy an exclusive prior-ity buying period until Wednesday, January 7 – when the general public can purchase tickets.

Ms Gibson said becoming a Glasshouse member was a win-win situation.

“You save on your tickets and be the first to secure the best seats in the house to a wide range of shows,” Ms Gibson said.

“Glasshouse shows frequently sell out – re-sulting in understandable disappointment – but the reality is we can only secure so many shows, so don’t wait too long. In fact, when The Aus-tralian Ballet presented The Dancers Company in 2011 it sold out in a week and was the fastest-selling show in the history of The Australian Ballet – anywhere, ever.”

FANCY a night at the ballet this weekend?

Swan Lake is on at the Glass-house on Saturday at 2pm and 7pm.

The Wauchope & Port Macqua-rie Performing Arts production is a rare chance to see Wauchope-born dancer Brendan Bradshaw in action.

Brendan has spent the past 12 years dancing on the world’s most famous stages as a leading dancer at the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

But now he has just returned to his home town to dance the principal role of Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake.

Brendan began dancing at the age of six under the guidance of current WPMPA teacher Francessca O’Donnell. He then trained with The Australian Ballet School graduating with the Graeme Murphy Award for Excellence in Contemporary Dance.

Brendan joined the Royal New Zealand Ballet in 2004, where he was well received as both a perform-

er and choreogra-pher. He danced a variety of soloist and principal roles, including Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Jose in Carmen, and the Prince in Swan Lake, the Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.

After over 10 years he left RNZB early 2014 return-ing to Australia to join Queensland Ballet for their Ro-meo and Juliet sea-son and Melbourne City Ballet for their Placebo season as both a performer and choreographer.

His work Inner had its Australian premier as part of their choreogra-phers showcase.

Tickets cost $35, concession $30, child or youth $25 and WPMPA family member $25.

NEW BOSCH WASHING MACHINE WOULD you like to win a five-star water-efficient Bosch wash-ing machine valued at $1000? If so, make sure you enter Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s Summer Water Saving promo-tion.

All you have to do is tell us your best water-saving tip. Council’s group manager water and sewer Andrew Doig

said the Summer Water Saving promotion was a great way to get everyone thinking about saving water.

“It’s important we take responsibility for the amount of water we use as a community, given water is a resource we all share,” Mr Doig said.

“By getting people to share their water saving tips - through social media as well - we’re able to exchange knowledge and information about the many different ways we can make small changes at home that collectively has a big impact for our region.”

You can also post your water-saving tip on facebook.com/pmhc2444 - to receive a free water saving pack for your home. Entries now open and close January 23.

For more information visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au - entries can be made online or at one of council’s branch offices.

THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s race 10 of the spring series was sailed in a reasonably strong but challenging north-easter with a run in tide keeping the water flat. Once again, lots of large jellyfish were a constant problem.

There was a larger catamaran fleet this week, and Frank O’Rourke in his new arrow cat Dino won ahead of Jack Corthals on Harpic, who won the start and was leading until he ran aground and capsized. Tony Kuhn on Stella still couldn’t catch Harpic, and Grady McNee on Princess finished be-hind Stella. Jason McGlashin on Green Machine retired with a damaged hull, and Dave Winter on Spica retired after a jellyfish hit which broke his rudder hold-down line. On handicap, Dino still took the win, with the minor placings reversed – Princess, Stella, then Harpic.

The monohull fleet was rather depleted this week with a number of people away. The ever-

consistent Warren Sykes and Braden Kaul on Blues Brothers sailed a great race to finish ahead of the other finisher, Terry Howard on Ratz. Paul Rob-ertson sailed with his dad Duncan on Flembouy-ant, but the north-easter was a bit much for the aging Duncan. Rob Barwick on the foiling moth Magic retired, mainly out of frustration from constant jellyfish hits – quite a problem when you are up and foiling. Blues Brothers also fin-ished ahead of Ratz on handicap.

Next Sunday are races 11-15 of the sprint series starting at mid-day. Terry Howard is rostered on duty.
