PORT LINCOLN CELLAR FOLK CLUB Issue 45 March 2013 Port Lincoln Cellar Folk Club “A PLACE WHERE FRIENDS MEET - AND NEW FRIENDS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME!” Flag Raising Ceremony The annual Flag Raising ceremony provides a brief history of Port Lincoln’s discovery and settlement interspersed with entertaining interludes by local groups of performers. The ceremony, which recounts the arrival on March 19 th 1839 of the first permanent European settlers on Eyre Peninsula is held on the Sunday nearest to the original landing date. For many years the Port Lincoln Caledonian Society has, with the help of various community groups, presented the ceremony at the First Landing Place at the mouth of Happy Valley. Increasingly in recent years, members of the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum have provided welcome assistance in staging the event and contributing to the program, and for the last two years because of inclement weather on the day, the ceremony has been held inside the Museum. This year the ceremony will be presented jointly by the Caledonian Society and the Maritime Museum and from now on we intend to hold the event inside the Museum each year to ensure certainty for the location of the venue and to avoid the need for last minute re- scheduling should the weather be unfavourable on the day. The event this year will be held on Sunday 17 th March beginning with a musical interlude from 10:00am and the ceremony starting at 10:30am will again include a symbolic re-enactment of the flag raising by the current Caledonian Scholarship holders, Molly Wright and Chelsea Nisbet, a guard of honour of Navy Cadets piped on by Honorary Piper Past Chief Ron Ross and a reading of the discovery and settlement of Port Lincoln by representatives from the Cadets and the Scouts plus our scholarship holders. MC for the occasion will be President of the museum, Mr Max Sims and guest speakers will be Mayor of Port Lincoln, Mr Bruce Green and Member for Flinders, Mr Peter Treloar. Again this year we are pleased to include entertainment provided by local groups “Boston Bay Jazz”, Port Lincoln “Sing Australia” choir and “Nelson’s Blood”. At the conclusion of the ceremony everyone is invited to inspect the Museum and enjoy a sausage sizzle on the verandah of the Museum, perhaps while enjoying an encore performance from “Nelson’s Blood”. Cellar Snippets By Linda Bick, President

The star attraction of the February CFC was definitely Ross Challinger’s super-duper lagerphone. Made from a native bush branch (sssh, we won’t tell the Greenies) he lovingly sanded, stained and varnished it, put in a dividing screw to make it more portable and added the bottle tops, but the piece de resistance was the addition of a horn and bell.

Ross says that it was a special left-handed one but he can make right or left handed versions so put in your orders now!

Being close to Valentine’s Day the night called for a love theme and a few relevant songs were sung, some romantic but others more about love’s disillusionment! We had some more travelling guests visiting the Cellar and the photographer from the Port Lincoln Times captured pictures of our smiling faces for the Community Corner.

Nelson’s Blood and Paul Hodgson suffered for their art in 30+ degree full sun while singing for the wedding of Polly and Brad….. at the Axel Stenross old wharf. The bride was to arrive on the quay by tinny while her groom and guests waited there. They waited and waited and waited while we sang and sang and sang…. When she finally arrived (and we had nearly melted) it was to the sound of us singing a very heartfelt ‘Polly, row the boat ashore, … Hallelujah!!!!”. However, we were assured that our long drawn out repertoire was appreciated.

I have been waving the CFC flag at the Frances Folk Gathering (near Bordertown) winning the woodwind competition with my tune “Pole Polka” played on the whistle, and being a judge for one of the vocal competitions. I also took part in “Mixed Grill” where groups of six musos,

unknown to each other, get together to write a song and perform it the next day. There are certain requirements attached - which include bribing the judges, and a lot of fun is had by all.

On the way back I stopped off in Adelaide to catch some Fringe Shows including seeing the one and only Vin Garbutt at the Gov. When I’ve watched it I will put his DVD in the Cellar Library.

As it is now Mad March, which includes St Patricks Day, the theme for the March CFC session this time is Irish so I hope you will all bring along your shamrocks, not to mention the Irish whisky and cream.

See you at the Cellar

Linda

Cath has a spare ticket for the Seekers Concert in Adelaide

"Hi, I have a ticket for the Seekers on 26th May with the cellar folks, but I am now going to Scotland on 15th May , if anyone is interested in this ticket, I am open to offers, it cost me $129, but will take an offer - Cheers Catherine
