John Barry (1745-1803)A naval hero of the American Revolution. In placing Barry at the head ofthe Navy, George Washington stated he had special trust and confidence"in [Barry's] patriotism, valor, fidelity and abilities." Neither Washington, Barry's old friend, nor the Nation ever had reason to regretthe selection of Barry as head of the Navy. Barry played a vital role in establishing the earliest traditions of the Navy: faithful devotion to duty, honoring the flag, and vigilant protection of the rights of the sovereignUnited States. The Niagara Frontier was the scene of most of the military activity during the war and the major fortification in the region was Fort Niagara, located on the present-day New York side of the Niagara Riverwhere it empties into Lake Ontario. This fine engraving shows the fort from across the river in Newark (where Fort George was generally located and now present-day Niagara-On-The-Lake). It thus provided readers of The Port Folio with an image of what would be the most important American stronghold on this significant front of the war

Jacob Jennings Brown (1775-1828) When the War of 1812 began, Jacob Brown was a brigadier general in the New York militia. Though he opposed the war, he organized the defenses in the Great Lakes region. He defeated the British at the Battleof Sackett's Harbor on May 29, 1813. The next year his army captured Fort Erie on Ontario. He was wounded twice at the Battle of Lundy's Lane, one of the bloodiest of the war for both sides. His successes in thenorthwest made him a national hero. After the war, the Army was cut and in 1821, he was the only major-general in the service.
