July 10, 2012 Welcome To Summer! As we celebrated Independence Day and the days after in a record breaking heat wave we are appreciative of the cool front that has moved in. Who would think a cool front in the eighties would be so welcome? However, compared to temperatures in the hundreds it certainly is more than appreciated! The animal shelters we sponsor and the Port Edward management determined that the past Tuesday and Thursday Doggie Dine Out was too hot for the dogs and their owners, as well as the Dock Side staff, so outside dinning was closed during the heat wave. Hopefully Mother Nature will keep the temperatures pleasant so outside dinning can enjoyable for all of the visitors and pets. Each organization Port Edward hosts, a fifteen percent donation from the Dockside proceeds is presented to the various sponsors. To date, we have donated over $5,000. Please view our website or Facebook page for the latest Dockside dinning real-time posts of what is happening in and around the Port. EXTRA!! EXTRA!! EXTRA!! BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND. Starting this Wednesday and every Wednesday we will be serving the CAPE COD CLAMBAKE! This amazing dish features live from the tank Maine lobster, clams, mussels, sausage, red potatoes, fresh corn-on-cob and a slice of Key Lime pie for just $25.99. With our authentic decor of the lobster shacks of old Maine, Cape Cod, Nantucket, and the harbors of New England, save that plane ticket and enjoy our CAPE COD CLAMBAKE experience just minutes away at Port Edward. VILLAGE OF ALGONQUIN FOUNDING : A SHORT HISTORY It could have been called Cornishville Founder’s Festival. Let's go back in time a bit. The very first settlers moved into the area of what is known as Algonquin from West Virginia after the Black Hawk War of 1832. At the time, the village became known as Cornish Ferry and later Cornishville, named after Dr. Cornish. The doctor also ran a ferry across the Fox River (now the docks of Port Edward). In the 1850s when Cornish passed away the settlement renamed the village Osceola, only to learn there already was an Osceola in Southern Illinois. A prominent landholder, Samuel Edwards, was chosen to pick a new name for the village. He chose the name Algonquin - not after the Indian tribe of upper New York, but after a trading ship he had served on along the East Coast. In addition, Algonquin means "across the water" in an Indian language and Edwards felt that was appropriate since the settlement straddled the Fox River.

VILLAGE OF ALGONQUIN FOUNDING : A SHORT HISTORY

It could have been called Cornishville Founder’s Festival. Port Edward and Ed Wolowiec have been involved since the inception of Algonquin Founder's Days. Mayor Armstrong, Judge Jerry Armstrong and the Algonquin Business Men's Association conceived the idea and Ed Wolowiec was present at the historic meeting. Our participation now, as back then, is the complimentary pre-parade buffet for the dignitaries (especially in an election year). Edward's Stutz Bearcat is also featred in the annual parade and other functions. Furthermore, Ed Wolowiec has been the Parade Marshal twice. The whole Founder's week is a great time both for the community and for us at Port Edward. We love when many of our long-time guests and residents that have moved out of town come home to say hello and reminisce.

This Founder's Day we are featuring the Broken Arrow Band, which will be playing for your entertainment Dockside throughout the evening. Join us for dinner, cocktails and fireworks Sunday, July 29th for the closing of the Founder’s Day festival. It’s sure to be an evening with a bang (pun intended)

DID YOU KNOW…Between the trade winds of the Northern and Southern hemisphere lies an area of calm winds, close to the equator called the Doldrums. Since sailing vessels relied upon wind, a trip through the Doldrums was often long, hot and very boring. Another DID YOU KNOW...When lost or unsure of position in coastal waters, ships would release a caged crow. The crow would fly towards the closest land thus giving the vessel some sort of a navigational fix. The tallest lookout platform on a ship came to be known as the crow's nest. Enjoy the other DID YOU KNOW'S in the book.
