Commodore’s Report
The July 4 week is upon us
and some may consider
this as the midpoint of
summer even though the
calendar indicates that
summer just began June
20! With the 4th
falling on
a Wednesday this year,
the Social Committee has
scheduled snacks for
Tuesday, July 3 and Thurs-
day, July 5, which coin-
cides with the member-
ship meeting that begins
at 8:00 P.M. that evening.
Of course, please review
the following pages or the
social calendar or the
website for all of July’s
social events.
The pool has been used
extensively this past
month due to a number
of 90+ degree days.
Thanks to Eric and the
pool staff for keeping the
water clean and refresh-
ing! As a reminder, pool
rules and policies are
listed in the Yearbook &
Social Calendar and can
be found on pages 11 and
12. Please note that all
guests must be registered
and pay a fee of $3.00.
Also note that the $3.00
fee is required from a
guest who may be a
member from another
yacht club. The fee is
waived if the guest is a
visiting boater. Any ques-
tions can be directed to
the pool co-chairpersons,
the facilities manager or
the Commodore.
A quick review shows that
the Club was able to com-
plete a number of pro-
jects during the first six
months of 2012. Projects
completed were the kid’s
room improvements, the
ladies restroom renova-
tion, the pool deck expan-
sion, the pool fence in-
stallation, patching and
painting the pool, and
completing the parking
lot repairs. The Board ap-
preciates and thanks all
the members who have
assisted. Two additional
projects are scheduled for
this month: the installa-
tion of a storage cooler
behind the clubhouse ad-
jacent to the kitchen door
and the installation of a
water meter and back
flow prevention device.
As with the pool, the club-
house has been rather
busy as members and
guests enjoy the relaxed
atmosphere. When visit-
ing, please keep in mind
that sometimes it is diffi-
cult for the bartenders to
find the time to clean off
tables. So please consider
clearing off the tables,
including those on the
deck, when you leave so
that the table will be
ready for the next pa-
trons. Your assistance is
appreciated by the bar-
tenders.
Good luck to the junior
race team as they com-
pete in several races this
year, including the PCYC
North Coast Jr. Regatta to
be held Saturday, July 7
and the I-LYA Jr. Bay
Week held at Put-in-Bay,
July 15-19.
Hopefully, everyone is
enjoying the summer and

by, relax and enjoy! When
visiting, please drive slow
and keep an eye out for
the children.
I really don't think I am supposed to
write this article yet. It is still light out, it is
not close to midnight, my wife
(proofreader) is still on her way back
from Chicago, and I am more than 12
hours away from Tammy's deadline. I
have all my papers laid out on the deck
table preparing for the task, trying to
come up with ideas and not repeat what
I have already written about. The wind
just picked up and blew everything into
the yard. I think I'll wait till later in the
evening when it gets dark and the wind
will probably die down. Time to call
Geoff B. and go golfing or mow the yard
or make a milkshake.
I swam out to the crib yesterday. Actu-
ally I walked most of the way. Now is a
good time for you sailors and jet skiers to
inspect the actual location of the crib
while the water visibility is good. It is
very close to the surface and quite spread
out. Look for the seagulls or ask Cindy
Bolte for the exact location. Speaking of
jet skis- after one launches and then
drops the harness lift slings into the la-
goon contact John Folger. He is a master
at retrieving sunken lift slings. Also when
using the hoist make sure you know the
weight of your vessel. The hoists do have
weight limits!!
We are currently experimenting with
podding our waste containers, calculat-
ing our waste production, and assessing
our needs for the number of containers
and dumpsters and ideal placement loca-
tions. We have had some problems with
the blue containers. They blow over in
storms, the trash then disperses, one con-
tainer took a swim, the containers and
posts have been hit multiple times by
cars, they take up parking space, the ani-
mals love them, they smell, and they are
an eyesore. Our preliminary calculation
indicates we could save the Club $10,000
to $15,000 this year with some changes
from past practices. Any input is appreci-
ated. Just talk to any Flag Officer, Board
Member, or Club Manager if their name
begins with "Chuck".
Another project- we are changing the
concrete in the back of the clubhouse in
order to eliminate access problems with
the three back doors. You will find it
much easier to move tables and chairs
out the back door and food into the
kitchen. This will also allow us to add a
pad for a cold storage cooler. Due to an
increase in alcohol consumption we cur-
rently have to cool items off site.
We are currently working out design
issues with our water meter project, com-
pleting the concrete project, fixing water
leaks when we can temporarily turn off
the dock water, working on Internet con-
nectivity, fixing irrigation lines, staining
82 picnic tables ( thanks to Paul Thatcher
and
crew), and as-
sorted other pro-
jects. Sean Kelly,
Doug Shealy, Eric
Reynolds, and
Duane Snyder
have taken the
lead in the con-
crete project, Glo-
ria Denos on the
mower, Ed Markel
on irrigation and
parking lines, the phantom window
washer, and a great job by the flower
committee. This is not a complete list of
volunteers.
I am looking for someone to paint the
corn hole boards made by Gary Rasmus-
sen last year and am also looking for four
cleats to mount onto the beach yardarm
for the halyards. My wife just got home
and the chore list is mounting. I guess
this article will still be an after midnight
project. Finally, we are trying to improve
the grass in the infield, and we do have a
parking issue on busy weekends, but we
would appreciate it if members would
park in any available asphalt parking
space before parking in the grass in the
infield.
PCYC Memories: In the 60's the only
place to swim was the lake. Our fathers
fabricated a set of stairs for us kids to get
down over the rocks and to the waters
edge. However, then we had to deal
with the muck and seaweed which we
could not see in the murky water. It
really scared us when the seaweed
would wrap its long slimy strands around
our tiny little legs and we never knew if
we would ever stop sinking into the
gooey mess. For the fortunate among us,
our Dads would carry us across the quag-
mire to the first sandbar. They eventually
actually built a wooden dock from the
rocks to the first sandbar. I guess our par-
ents did not like walking through the
elements either. Unfortunately, the
storms took their toll on the dock and it's
life was short lived.
In the 70's there were no night ferries
to Put-In-Bay. If you wanted to get to
Frosty's at night you had to
know Ken Hershey, John
Bolte, or me. I tried to see if I
could keep up with Ken on
the number of trips to the
Bay. Back then our 18ft in-
board/outboard only had a
12 gallon gas tank, I used six
gallons going over and
back, and gas was $1.35/
gallon. That turned out to
be an impossible task. We
would go every night the waves were
two feet or less but I never was able to
keep up with Ken. You also had to be
careful which set of Red and Green har-
bor lights you used to return home or
you could end up in Gene Bolte's living
room. Gene figured at least John would
find his way home. We had quite a few
interesting excursions. That was before
GPS and the power plant which now can
be used as a landmark. On one foggy
trip my compass malfunctioned, the stars
were out of position, and with no radio
or phone, I ended up at sand beach. I
always carried two compasses after that.
The weather has been great, enjoy
your club, and if you see grass in a park-
ing lot crack, kick it or pick it.
Rear Commodore,
Michael Hablitzel

On June 15th – 17th 13 boats and 43 folks cruised to the Toledo Yacht Club (TYC) for a very good time. TYC bent over backwards for us with a cookout on Friday evening and fine dining on Satur-day. In between, several folks went to the new casino to attempt to win enough money to cover the gas cost for the trip!
June was a very busy month for PCYC water events. After the Memorial Day Weekend dinghy run to Lagoon Saloon in which approximately 45 people using 7 dinghies and small boats made their way up the river, we had the Hands on Boating for Women event on June 9th coupled with the Port Clinton Power Squadron course “Partners Command” pre-sented by Executive Officer Joyce Jagucki. We had 14 women boaters participate which was followed by on the water in-structions by Captains Gill Root and Mike Mulligan, after which T-
Coming up is the Cruise Out to Middle Bass Island Yacht Club on July 20th – 22nd, which will be a fun event. In addition to the Fri-day night “Docktail” party and the Saturday morning “Bloody Mary Brunch”, we are having a BYOS Saturday event just like the ones at PCYC. Please bring your own steaks and a dish to share with everyone. As of this writing, 17 boats have signed up for the run to Middle Bass.
As you can see, this is a very fun time for all at PCYC! Enjoy your club and have a safe 4th!
