Father Martin’s role as Chaplain began at our last regular meeting on Thursday July 5, 2018. Thank you Father Martin! Texas Facts Last month, in celebration of the Fourth of July, I gave you a few facts about our country and why we should all be proud to live in the United States. This month I want to give you a few facts about Texas that will highlight the fact that we live in a great state, in a great country. As I men- tioned before, I am not a native Texan but ‘I got here as quick as I could’. Here are a few reasons why. From www.eia.gov/state/data.php?sid=TX#EnergyIndicators Remember the GDP of the United States from last month’s message? It was $19 trillion. From the table above you can see that Texas’ GDP was $1.6 trillion in 2016. That GDP is larger than the GDP of most of the countries in the European Union. That’s the same EU (as members of NATO) that graciously allow the United States to pay 70% of the cost of NATO. But I digress. Texas is number 1 in the Land in Farms category with 130.2 million acres, third in Average Temperature and 35 th in Precipitation. So as you al- ready know, it is hot and dry in Texas (duh), but we still have the most farm acres. I know nothing about farming but that can’t be easy! Yesterday my thermometer hit 109! I can’t imagine what it must have been like in the middle of a field! The 13.8 million men and women in the Civilian Labor Force in Texas rank 25 th in Per Capita Income. That tells me that we aren’t here for the money and those farmers aren’t getting rich either. On the other hand, coming from a state that has a significant state income tax was like getting a raise just for moving to Texas. One more reason to live where we live. Texas Has Oil and we aren’t afraid to use it (from www.forbes.com - Sept 7, 2017) There were a total of 141 operable petroleum refineries in the United States as of January 1, 2017. Consider that 48 of the 58 PADD 3 refineries are located in the states of Texas (30) and Louisiana (18). Texas has 21.3% of all refineries in the United States and that is probably because Texas has a boat-load of oil. The numbers that follow are from 2013, and I believe that oil production has gone UP considerably in the past 18 months! I wonder why! Texas alone provided almost 35%, ac- cording to preliminary 2013 data released in EIA's March Petroleum Supply Monthly. Grand Knight’s Message - August 2018

Welcome Father John Martin I would like to welcome Father John Martin to our parish and thank him for agreeing to be Chaplain of Knights of Columbus Council 2045. Father Martin’s role as Chaplain began at our last regular meeting on Thursday July 5, 2018. Thank you Father Martin! This month I want to give you a few facts about Texas that will highlight the fact that we live in a great state, in a great country. As I men-tioned before, I am not a native Texan but ‘I got here as quick as I could’. Here are a few reasons why.

AUGUST ASSEMBLY NEWS

Continued from page 1:

It Sure Is Hot Out (from www. dallasnews.com - July 19, 2018) The Electric Reliability Council of Texas set a sixth electricity-usage record in the last four days. Between 4 and 5 p.m. Thursday, Texas aver-aged 73,259 megawatts. That topped the amount of electricity used an hour earlier and also in consecutive hours Wednesday afternoon. Those numbers all beat the August 2016 mark of 71,110. One megawatt is the amount needed to power about 200 Texas homes on a hot day, ac-cording to ERCOT. Military Bases (from (https://militarybases.com/texas) Texas is a favorite of the military with fifteen military bases in Texas. The Marines and Coast Guard are the only branches without bases in TX. Most bases cluster around San Antonio and Corpus Christi.

Texas Bullion Depository (from https://schiffgold.com – June 11, 2018)

The Texas Bullion Depository officially opened for business this week. The creation of the facility represents a power-shift away from the federal government and sets the foundation to undermine the Federal Reserve’s monopoly on money. Wind Power Generation (from https://m.chron.com – December 4, 2017) When a 155-megawatt wind farm in West Texas began commercial operation this month, it helped push the state's wind power capacity even higher, to more 20,000 megawatts, surpassing 19,800 megawatts of capacity from coal-fired power plants, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which oversees 90 percent of the state's grid. Texas Power Grid (from www.texastribune.org) There are three grids in the Lower 48 states: The Eastern Interconnection, the Western Interconnection - and Texas. The separation of the Texas grid from the rest of the country has its origins in the evolution of electric utilities early last century. The other 47 continental states rely on 2 elec-tric grids but Texas has its own. Whatever the origins of the Texas grid may have been, it sounds more like a good plan than a history lesson to me. So the next time the ‘talking heads’ hand-out insults to those of us that live in ‘fly-over country’, consider these facts: Texas has the oil, the refiner-ies, the military bases, the gold bullion, wind power generation, the farm land, the electric grid, first-class universities, pro second amendment laws and a $1.6 trillion GDP. So when the aliens land and try to take over the planet, where else would you rather be? The point is: You are in the right place. Thank you, Richard Janeski – Grand Knight

Let’s all remember that school starts again in August, so we need to be careful in those

School Zones and keep our kids safe.

Aug. 2, Assembly Meeting, 6:45 PM. Followed by Council meeting. Aug. 6, The Transfiguration of the Lord Aug. 15, The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sept. 8, 4th Degree Exemplification for the Diocese of Dallas Oct. 6, 4th Degree Exemplification for the Diocese of Ft Worth

Council 2045 Officer Installation The officers for fraternal year 2018-2019 were installed on Saturday June 30, 2018. The ceremony was hosted by Mon-signor Charles King Council 4771 in Denton, and officiated by our District Deputy Terry Sullivan (pictured in center above). I want to thank Grand Knight Johnny Guajardo and the members of Council 4771 for their hospitality.

Our Next Meeting Is Thursday August 2, 2018 – Also On August 2, 136 Years Ago (from www.texasdaybyday.com) On this day in 1882, the commissioners of Pecos County officially appointed Roy Bean justice of the peace. He retained the post, with short interruptions, until he retired vol-untarily in 1902. As he gained fame for being an eccentric and original interpreter of the law, the Kentucky native became known as the "Law West of the Pecos." For ex-ample, when a man carrying forty dollars and a pistol fell off a bridge, Bean fined the corpse forty dollars for carrying a concealed weapon. The forty dollars covered the man's funeral expenses. Bean died in his saloon on March 16, 1903, of lung and heart ailments and was buried in the Del Rio cemetery. His shrewdness, audacity, unscrupu-lousness, and humor, aided by his knack for self-dramatization, made him an enduring part of American folklore. RJ - I’ll bet if Judge Roy Bean had to go through the current confirmation process there would have been more than one person falling off a bridge.

The Pitfalls of Replacing Coverage You know the old saying, “the grass seems greener on the other side of the fence,” but we all know that it rarely is. The same holds true when it comes to replacing your existing Knights of Columbus life insurance with coverage of-fered by another company. Perceptions are deceiving. A move to the “greener” grass on the other side of the fence might seem like a good one, but it can leave you with less green in your wallet — in some cases, a lot less. That’s why it pays to remember another old adage, “Read the fine print.” There are many reasons to keep your existing coverage in force, whether that coverage is with the Knights of Columbus or with an-other company. I’ll focus on the potential pitfalls of replacing coverage here — pitfalls that an agent trying to convince you that the grass actually is greener might neglect to mention. First, all life insurance contracts contain a contestability period, which allows the insurer to contest claims made for a period — typi-cally two years — after the contract is issued. Chances are this is no longer an issue with your current coverage. Second, it’s unlikely that you can obtain the same amount of coverage, for the same premium, that you were able to obtain with your existing contract. The two factors that determine how much you’ll need to pay for life insurance coverage are age and health. Cer-tainly, you’re older now than you were when you took out your current coverage. There’s no way around that. And you have to ask yourself, has your health changed during that time? Is your blood pressure the same? Your cholesterol? Have you gained weight? All these factors can affect the amount of coverage you’ll get for your premium dollar. If someone encourages you to replace — or worse, drop — your existing coverage, please call me. I’ll show you how your existing coverage is working for you and why replacement is rarely in your best interest. Art Kelly (see contact information on the back of the KnightLife)
