Sponsored by Bill, Ella, Mary-Anne & Mick W hen I was very young I pleaded with my parents for a pet dog. They were not animal lovers and couldn’t understand why I so desperately wanted a dog. Initially to appease me they gave me a squeaky toy dog, which I took everywhere, when I played with him in the bath I would fill him up with water and squirt water everywhere and so I named him puddles. Of course I was not satisfied with a toy and eventually wore them down and they took me to a place that was probably the old days equivalent of a puppy farm. There were pens of puppies to choose from. I was told to choose a male so they wouldn’t have to pay for desexing. The puppy was sold to us as a cross cocker spaniel/black and tan terrier. Of course I named him “Puddles”. He quickly grew into a dog that very much resembled a kelpie cross. He was my responsibility, as no one else in the family had any interest in dogs. Imagine a five year old girl raising a dog of that type with no idea and no assistance in a suburban backyard. I took him out for walks - he dragged me everywhere and regularly got away from me. I wrestled with him in the yard and he ripped my clothing and nipped a lot. He bit the neighbours children when they touched my things. If my father went to smack me the dog bit him. He cleared our five foot fences with ease and terrorised the neighbours. He barked a lot at night and the neighbours complained. He chased the postman and I can remember the green grocer trying to deliver to our house and running around the front yard with “Puddsy” nipping at his heels. He fought with other male dogs in the street. My mother in her wisdom thought that it was a good idea to let the dog out for a run around sunset and then he would come home for dinner and he got into all sorts of scrapes on these outings. I often think that it was a shame that my parents didn’t choose a breed that I could’ve managed better by myself, but then imagine if he had been a Rottweiler. In spite of all this I thought he was the greatest dog ever, I could never see any harm in him. He was my best friend. He lived a long and happy life, his behaviour never improved he just slowed down as he aged. I think I learned a lot about dog behaviour from him - the hard way. As an adult dog owner I am much more responsible and in control. Since then I have had several dogs and they have all been great dogs in different ways. I have found that when I have a new puppy if I take them everywhere when they are young I don’t have many social problems. These days you will see me at dog training with Diva, my little black and white spaniel cross. Diva by name and Diva by nature, she’s a little princess. About a year ago Diva developed epilepsy. She fitted for a long time until the vet medicated her to stop. The vet advised us that this was very worrying and would most probably have caused some brain damage. She has made a very good recovery and I don’t see much difference in her except occasionally, especially when she is tired she seems just a little bit wonky. She is on daily medication which seems to have her under control, she has had a couple of minor episodes in the last couple of months, but nothing major. We also have our daughter’s black lab Strider living with us. After the usual 2 years of mayhem and destruction that is common for labs he has become a much loved part of our clan. He and Diva are constant companions. I hope to be able to do some obedience training with him before too long. An elderly man on a Mo-ped, looking about 90 years old, pulls up next to a doctor at a street light.

The old man looks over at the sleek shiny car and asks, “What kind of car ya got there, sonny?” The doctor replies, “A Ferrari GTO. It cost half a million dollars!” “That’s a lot of money,” says the old man. “Why does it cost so much?” “Because this car can do up to 220 miles an hour!” states the doctor proudly. The Mo-ped driver asks, “Mind if I take a look inside?” “No problem,” replies the doctor.. So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. Then, sitting back on his Mo-ped, the old man says, “That’s a pretty nice car, all right… but I’ll stick with my Mo-ped!” Just then the light changes, so the doctor decides to show the old man just what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 150 mph. Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer ! He slows down to see what it could be and suddenly WHOOOOSSSHHH! Something whips by him going much faster!

“What on earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?” the doctor asks himself. He presses harder on the accelerator and takes the Ferrari up to 180 mph. Then, up ahead of him, he sees that it’s the old man on the Mo-ped! Amazed that the Mo-ped could pass his Ferrari, he gives it more gas and passes the Mo-ped at 200 mph and he’s feeling pretty good until he looks in his mirror and sees the old man gaining on him AGAIN! Astounded by the speed of this old guy, he floors the gas pedal and takes the Ferrari all the way up to 220 mph. Not ten seconds later, he sees the Mo-ped bearing down on him again! The Ferrari is flat out, and there’s nothing he can do ! Suddenly, the Mo-ped plows into the back of his Ferrari, demolishing the rear end. The doctor stops and jumps out and unbelievably the old man is still alive. He runs up to the banged-up old guy and says, “I’m a doctor.... Is there anything I can do for you ?” The old man whispers, “Unhook my suspenders from your side view mirror!”

The SoldierLastweekIwasinMelbourneattendingaconference.

While I was in the airport, returning home, I heard several people behind me beginning to clap and cheer. I immediately turned around and witnessed one of the greatest acts of patriotism Ihaveeverseen.Movingthroughtheterminal was a group of soldiers in their uniforms, as they began heading to their gate everyone (well almost everyone) was abruptly to their feet with their hands waving and cheering. When I saw the soldiers,probably30-40ofthem,beingapplauded and cheered for, it hit me. I’m not alone. I’m not the only red blooded Australianwhostilllovesthiscountryandsupports our troops and their families. Of course I immediately stopped and began clapping for these young unsung heroes who are putting their lives on the line everyday for us so we can go to school, work, and enjoy our home without fear or reprisal. Just when I thought I could not be more proud of my country or of our service men and women a young girl, not more than 6 or 7 years old, ran up to one of the male soldiers. He knelt down and said ‘hi,’ the little girl then asked him if he would give something to her daddy for her. The young soldier didn’t look any older than maybe 22 himself, said he would try and what did she want to give to her daddy. Suddenly the little girl grabbed the neck of this soldier, gave him the biggest hug she could muster and then kissed him on the cheek. The mother of the little girl, who said her daughters name was Courtney, told the young soldier that her husband was a Corporal and had

beeninAfghanistanfor5monthsnow.Asthe mum was explaining how much her daughter, Courtney, missed her father, the young soldier began to tear up. When this temporarily single mum was done explaining her situation all of the soldiers huddled together for a brief second. Then one of the other servicemen pulled out a military looking walkie-talkie.

They started playing with the device and talkingbackandforthonit.Afterabout10-15secondsofthis,theyoungsoldierwalked back over to Courtney, bent down and said this to her, ‘I spoke to your daddy and he told me to give this to you.’ He then hugged this little girl that he had just metandgaveheraKissonthecheek.

He finished by saying ‘Your daddy told me to tell you that he loves you more than anything and he is coming home very soon.’ The mum at this point was crying almost uncontrollably and as the young soldier stood to his feet he saluted Courtney and her mum. I was standing no more than 6 feet away as this entire event unfolded.

Asthesoldiersbegantoleave, headingtowards their gate, people resumed their applause.

AsIstoodthereapplaudingandlookedaround, there were very few dry eyes, including my own.

That young soldier in one last act of moment turned around and blew a kiss to Courtney with a tear rolling down his cheek. We need to remember everyday all of our soldiers and their families and

The Mystery Mutt

Quote Of The MonthThe most affectionate creature in the world is a wet dog.

Ambrose Bierce 1842-1914

memBers’ GUessinG competition no. 13

The breed emerged in England in the mid 1700’s and it seems likely, given its characteristics, that it is linked to ancient

herders,includingtheBergamasco,theBeardedCollie,theBriardandtheArmant.InEnglandinthe18thcentury,taxexemptionwas granted to drover dogs, which helped drive the herds to market. To mark these dogs, their tails were docked. This dog was excellent at this job because of their eagerness and weather-resistant coats. However no one in these days groomed the dogs and they were sheared annually along with the sheep. These dogs are distinctive the world over with their long, shaggy coats covering thickset bodies. Their eyes appear to be totally covered but their vision is never impaired. From behind, their walk is a bear-likerollandwhentrottingshoweffortlessextensionwithapowerfuldrivefromthehindquarters.

These dogs are cheerful extroverts and make superb family companions. They have lovely natures but can be excitable and rough when playing, therefore care must be taken when young children are involved. They will join in every possible activity with enthusiasm. They are fearless and make excellent guard dogs, especially with their resonant bark which is sufficient to frighten off any intruder.Theywillhowever,getonwellwithotheranimalsanddogs.Beingassocialastheyare,visitors will be warmly welcomed.

This is an intelligent breed who needs firm handling during training to overcome their strong wills. However, they do want to please their handler. Early training is imperative to control the breed’s boisterous behaviour.

We had a great time at Norah head, the best caravan park we have ever been in,

although I as usual had my little drama’s. I am beginningtothinkmydaughterMary-Anneisright saying I am a disaster waiting to happen?

1st day an hour after we got there, went down to a big rocky beach where we could take the dogs. When a gush of water came in I Tried to elegantly jump on a rock so not to wet my shoes. I fell flat on my face down between rocks mmm...4brokennails,3cutsonmyhand2onmy arm both knees bleeding and a very bruised ego mmm.

Next day, new day, new start. We went on the oceanbeachatBudgewoiwheredogscango off leash no rocks so safe enough… even for me.AbigwavecameinandIsawBillrunningbackwards so he would not get his feet wet so I did too mmm... landed flat on my back, well you should have heard him.

On the serious side of it I wanted to check out that dog off leash beach as I ran a story on it a few months back. It is brilliant, our dogs and many others had a ball. The only bit that I didn’t like was from the car park to the beach just about50meterslovelywalk.Thereare2binsateach end of that walkway and every day we went there, people had left their dogs poo at thesideofthewalkway.Mostlikelylocalpeoplebut why can they not see that is the reason we loose more and more of our beaches to take our best friends to. The Mystery Mutt

Quote Of The MonthThe most affectionate creature in the world is a wet dog.

These dogs are cheerful extroverts and make superb family companions. They have lovely natures but can be excitable and rough when playing, therefore care must be taken when young children are involved. They will join in every possible activity with enthusiasm. This is an intelligent breed who needs firm handling during training to overcome their strong wills. However, they do want to please their handler. Early training is imperative to control the breed’s boisterous behaviour.

Dog Of The Month? If this photo shows your dog and you claim it at the

When I was very young I pleaded with my parents for a pet dog. They were not animal lovers and couldn’t

understand why I so desperately wanted a dog. I often think that it was a shame that my parents

didn’t choose a breed that I could’ve managed better by myself, but then imagine if he had been a Rottweiler. In spite of all this I thought he was the greatest dog ever, I could never see any harm in him. He was my best friend. He lived a long and happy life, his behaviour never improved he just slowed down as he aged. I think I learned a lot about dog behaviour from him - the hard way. As an adult dog owner I am much more responsible and in control.Since then I have had several dogs and they have all been great dogs in different ways.
