Pontotoc High School
The February 27th Career Café was hosted by the following Pontotoc Ridge Career and Technology Center Programs – Drafting, Welding and Construction.
Drafting instructor, Barry Reeder represented the Drafting program. Study in Drafting allows each student to produce workable drawings on the drawing board and with the computer. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be qualified for an entry-level drafting or related position or may pursue post-secondary education. Skills developed through the course of study assist students in meeting requirements for the ADDA certification.
The Welding program instructor is Chad Whisenant. This course focuses on the NCCER Learning Series Core and Shielded Metal Arc Welding. Students will also be exposed to Gas Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, and Flux Core Arc Welding, as well as learning Oxyfuel Cutting fundamentals. Students will leave the class with a firm foundation of knowledge in the areas of employability skills, safety, and basic tool knowledge. Proper equipment setup, safety measures, and correct welding techniques will be covered.
Construction Instructor, Roger Dillard, represented his program. Construction:Carpentry is designed as a program for preparation to enter the field of Construction. The Construction:Carpentry program includes an introduction to the basic carpentry processes. The purpose of the course is to prepare students to continue study in a post-secondary construction program (Residential Carpentry) or to begin work at the entry level in a carpentry occupation. Program units are written to the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification standards.
Many thanks go to these instructors for representing their programs so well. The March 6th Career Café will be hosted by the Pontotoc Police Department and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks.
Pennies for Patients Pennies for Patients is probably the oldest service project PHS currently participates in. This fundraiser has been around at least 10 years and donations are generally well into the hundreds of dollars range. One way this happens is by setting goals. If each of the 50 boxes that were distributed collects at least $10, PHS will donate at least $500 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society that helps children with childhood cancer. 100% of the money collected will be donated in the name of Pontotoc High School. The fundraiser is called Pennies for Patients, but of course all "real" money can be donated. Pontotoc has a rich tradition of "Service." Help continue to facilitate the gift of giving.

The Greatest Showman premiered in theaters in December of 2016. The movie is the story of P.T. Barnum and his unforgettable rags to riches story. The movie is not just a story about the circus, but it is also a story of love, adversity, and ambition. Come and join us under the big top, as we turn the junior high auditorium into a freak show filled circus. Whether it be a bearded lady, the world’s heaviest man, or Napoleon himself, you never know what you will see under the big top. Donations will also be accepted.

Ross wins Pontotoc Jr High Spelling Bee
This past Tuesday the Pontotoc Junior High spelling bee, a preliminary to the Pontotoc City Bee, was held in the PJHS media center. With both students from seventh and eighth grade participating, this year seventh grader Benji Ross was the one to take the title of Pontotoc Junior High Spelling Bee Champion. This year’s second place winner was Ben Jones with Tyler Wilburn coming in third. They, as well as seven others, will go on to participate in the City Bee which combines the talents of PJHS with those of PMS. The Pontotoc City Bee is scheduled to take place April 1 in the PJHS auditorium. We wish all our participants luck!

Countdown to D.C.!
Our group of students and teachers enrolled to travel to Washington, D.C. over Spring Break will be boarding the
plane in
9 days!
It's Time For Schedule Requests!
All current 6th and 7th grade students received a 2019-2020 Course Request Worksheet and a copy of the 2019-2020 PJHS Course Descriptions. Students should complete this worksheet with their parents and return it to their 1st period
teacher by March 8. It is important to note that some classes taken at PJHS do count for High School credit. This means that the student's final grade in the course will be calculated into their overall High School GPA and be placed
on their transcript. These classes are marked with an (*) in the Course Descriptions.
It is important to note that just because you request a certain elective/course does not mean that you will be enrolled in that course, nor does it mean that you will be enrolled in a certain class period. 8th grade students are usually
scheduled first, followed by 7th grade.
If there are any questions, please contact Kelsie Cruse - 7th/8th School Counselor by email at [email protected]

*PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES ON FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 2019 FROM 8-3*
Aerodynamics in Science
To continue our study on aerodynamics, Ms. Teague’s classes
had a chance to make Tumble Gliders. We discussed terms
like lift, drag, thrust, and weight. We have discussed the
Wright Brothers and how they created the first
airplane. We previously made small paper rockets
and now the tumble gliders to show how all the
terms (lift, drag, thrust, and weight) work together to
make airplanes, rockets, or tumble gliders fly.

FUN Theory
Fifth grade UFO students examined the question, "Can we change human
behavior for the better by making it fun to do?" This was a question
posed by Volks Wagon, which launched an international competition for
people to think of innovative ways to make mundane tasks more
enjoyable. Following that model, students asked questions like, "Can we
get students to walk on the right side of the hallway by making it fun to
do?" and "Can we get more kids to clean their rooms by making to fun
to do?" Then they created products as fun solutions to present to the
class. Students used thinking skills, creativity skills, and communication
skills in this FUN unit called Fun Theory.

Walk Like an Egyptian Third and fourth grade UFO classes at DT Cox have been working hard on their Egyptian unit, which will culminate with our Egyptian Festival at the end of March. Students have created papier mache funeral masks and learned about the mummification process by mummifying an apple slice and placing in their cartouche (an Egyptian jar for holding organs removed from the body). Students have also learned the process of drawing like an Egyptian, which they demonstrated in their Tin Foil Art and their Egyptian Profiles. Students enjoyed learning how to play Ceega and Senet, one of the oldest board games, actually found in King Tut's tomb. This unit has been a fun and educational experience for our UFO students as we've learned about ancient Egyptian culture.

PES Celebrates Read Across
America
Our students and teachers enjoyed many activities to celebrate reading! Students and teachers enjoyed dressing up each day in different Dr. Seuss themed dress up days. Classrooms invited special guests to read their favorite book. Dr. Seuss reminds us all "The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn the more places
you will go."

Black History Month First Grade has been studying Black History all of February. To wrap up our study, we took a trip to the Union County
Heritage Museum to see what life was like long ago and the rich heritage of our area.
