GUEST ACCOMODATIONS

There are several options for accommodation at the resort and all are close to the lake. Two 2 bedroom cabins as well as one 1 bedroom cabin and 8 motel/apartment units are included. The motel/apartment units are built for year round comfort. All of the accommodations are self-contained with complete kitchens, dining area, full bathrooms and electric heat. Bedrooms have queen and single beds and all bedding and linen is supplied (except for beach towels). Television is only available in the motel/apartment units. There is access to fire pits on the beach for barbecuing and campfires.

The resort has campsites, RV and motor home spaces with water and power hookups along the beach, and a sanitary damp station is on site. Complete hookups and pull through sites are available only 40 metres away from the beach. There are coin-operated laundry facilities, a hot shower, a covered outdoor kitchen area and a fish cleaning area.

Boat rentals and fishing tackles are available and there is a concrete boat launching ramp.

Detailed InformationLocation The resort is situated on the southwest shore

of Canim Lake, near the south end of the lake, approximately 35 km east of 100 Mile House. Access from 100 Mile House to the resort as follows: 1.6 km north on Hwy 97 to the Canim-Hendrix Lake Road then 17 km north and east to the small community of Forest Grove then 14 km due east on the Canim Lake Road, and finally 4 km north-east to the resort. The roads are all paved, of good contraction and well maintained throughout the year. Access to the resort is quite easy.

There is a post office and general store within 2 km of the resort. There is an elementary school at forest grove. 100 Mile House is the major trading centre, providing full shopping facilities and all other basic services.

Surrounding properties include seasonal and year round waterfront houses, plus vast areas of Crown land.

The lot is 3.41 acre with 650’ of lakefront, gently sloping downwards from the road to the waterfront-all level throughout. There is a small creek running from south to north, the tree cover is quite dense, consisting of large fir, spruce, some cedar and birch. The ground cover is light.

There is an excellent sandy beach with easy access.

DIRECTIONS

From Vancouver travel through the Fraser Canyon on Highway 1 to Hope and Cache Creek, and then on Highway 97 to Clinton and 100 Mile House. Go through 100 Mile House turn east and about 3 km north of 100 Mile House and the paved road continues for 40 km through Forest Grove before reaching Canim Lake. Follow the signs to Canim Lake. About 6 hours.

From Alberta, take Yellowhead Highway 5 through Valemount and Clearwater, turn on Highway 24 at Little Fort go through 100 Mile House and follow the signs to Canim Lake as above. About 2 hours from Clearwater.

Fly from Vancouver International Airport to Williams Lake and rent a car, the flight is about 1 hour and the drive is about 2 hours.

AREA DATA and RECREATION

Canim Lake This 37 km long lake is one of the most popular lakes found in the Cariboo Chilcotin region. It is set on an area of picturesque contours, rolling green hills, expansive meadows and numerous water sport activities. The lake reaches a comfortable temperature of 21ºC. During the summer months, it is advisable to take in some of the sights found

in the area, such as volcanic cones near Spanish Creek.

Canim FallsLocated at the east end of Canim Lake in Wells Gray Provincial Park, Canim Falls can be reached by following the trail that starts from the logging road that parallels the south side of Canim Lake. Deception Falls and Mahood Falls are other magnificent waterfalls to see in the area.

Fishing Canim Lake is serious angling country in summer, offering some of the finest freshwater fly-fishing in British Columbia. Canim Lake is the angling centre of a region famed for the size of its char, or laker, as the fish are referred to locally. Anglers look for kokanee, rainbow, lake trout up to 25 lbs, or ling cod. Ice fishing season on Canim Lake runs from mid December to mid March, offering rainbow trout, lake trout, kokanee and burbot (freshwater ling cod).

The fall is a myriad of colours as the Cariboo goes through the time of year better known as Indian summer. The crisp mornings are invigorating and as a result some of the best fishing can be done at this time of year. The transformation of colours is not only evident in the leaves turning colours, but also in the phenomenal sunsets seen in the early evening.

The winter months also provide the outdoor enthusiast with many activities such as dog sledding adventure, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, skating, snowmobiling, ice fishing and sleigh rides.

Although Canim Lake offers rural solitude, it also provides for some of the urban necessities: a country store + coffee shop 2 km down the road from the resort, a nice walk along the lake, or a ½

hour drive into 100 Mile House.

HISTORY

Canim Lake is the traditional territory of the Secwepemc (Shuswap) First Nations Band. The Native people of Canim Lake and their ancestors are a part of what is known as the Lake Division of the Shuswap Tribe within the Interior Salish Nations in BC. Canim Lake region is made up of six parcels of designated reserve land totaling 2,029 hectares that were originally set aside for the band by the Reilly Commission in 1887.

Archaeological evidence of ancient habitation in the Soda Creek region of the Cariboo during the summer of 1995 was carbon dated at approximately 4,300 years old.

The name Canim appropriately means canoe in the Chinook language.
