INTRODUCTION
During the report period (October 21, 1992-June 30, 1993) of the Pond Monitoring and Maintenance and Red Drum, Sciaenops oce77atus, Gut Evaluation project, work was performed at the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI) Fish Stock Enhancement Facil ity (SERF) and at Mote Marine Laboratory (MML). The project encompassed the following activities: 1) monitoring and maintenance of SERF ponds and tanks, by MML Staff Biologist, Diana Skapura and Biological Technician, Kathleen West; 2) stomach content evaluations of red drum, Sciaenops oce77atus, collected by Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI) personnel from Bishop Harbor, Tampa Bay and Vol usia County, Florida; and 3) red drum, Sciaenops oce77atus, gut passage experiments.

Mote Marine Laboratory personnel, Diana Skapura (Staff Biologist, Supervisor) and Kathleen West (Biological Technician) worked closely with FMRI staff to maintain and monitor finfish pond and tank systems at SERF. Ms. Skapura and Ms . West worked at SERF full-time and were responsible for numerous hatchery operations. Ms. Skapura was responsible for assisting in the coordination of red drum broodstock maintenance when the FMRI position was vacated. In addition, Ms. Skapura took part in personnel schedul ing and the delegation of daily job assignments for pond activities.
Ms. Skapura was on maternity leave from April 23-June 25, 1993, at which time Ms. West was responsible for the delegation of daily job assignments for pond activities, in addition to rendering SCUBA assistance. It was also during Ms . Skapura's maternity leave that Lisa Carter (Biological Technician stationed at MML) worked at SERF part-time to assist with the workload of daily activities. Ms. Skapura's, Ms. West's, and Ms. Carter's activities and responsibilities during the report period included the following:

2. Bishop Harbor, Tampa Bay and Vol usia County Red Drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, Gut Content Evaluations
Introduction
In an effort to enhance populations of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatu5, off Florida's coasts, FMRI released hatchery-produced red drum into Bishop Harbor, Tampa Bay on the west coast and Vol usia County on the east coast. To provide information on the survival and growth of the released red drum, their impact on feral red drum and prey species, habitat preference, movement and recruitment, stock assessment studies were performed by FMRI. Mote Marine laboratory was responsible for the evaluation of food predilection as determined by gut content analysis of nontagged and tagged red drum captured by FMRI. Identification of stomach content compositions and quantities provided information on food preference and the amount consumed.
Materials and Methods
Red drum captured by FMRI staff in Bishop Harbor, Tampa Bay and Vol usia County were preserved in 70 percent ethanol (ETOH) and transferred to MMl for examination. Prior to analysis, each fish was verified as a red drum, scanned for a coded wire tag, measured for total length (Tl) and standard length (Sl) to the nearest 0.1 mm and weighed to the nearest 0.01 g. If available, 20 red drum were processed from each collection and information provided by FMRI and data generated by MMl for each fi sh was recorded on a Red Drum Gut Ana lys is Form (Figure 1).
To evaluate a red drum gut, the carcass was placed in a petri dish or dissecting tray and kept moist with reverse osmosis (RO) water. Analysis began by exposing the abdominal cavity by removing a flap of muscle and skin tissue from the side by making an incision from the anus forward to the lower jaw, dorsal to the operculum, bacK to the anus. The gut (stomach and intestine) was eviscerated by making an incision anterior to the esophagus and another at the anus. The gut was weighed to the nearest 0.01 g and stomach fullness was defined on a scale of 0 = empty to 5 = distended.
The gut was incised along the length of the stomach and intestine. The items contained in the gut were removed with a fine point probe, placed in a petri dish and were examined using a dissecting microscope, identified to the lowest possible taxon and enumerated (Figure 1). The item(s) from taxa were weighed to the nearest 0.01 g, measured (if appropriate) and preserved in a vial containing 70 percent ETOH. Vial labels included the following information: identification of taxa; location (BH or VC) of capture; station; collection date; total length (mm) and wet weight (g) of fish. Gut data were entered into a

computer database {Paradox, Borland and Associates, 3.5 software}. A collection of representative specimens from each taxon was cataloged and is now referenced at MML for use in future identifications.
After analysis, the carcasses {excluding the gut} of tagged red drum were placed in 70 percent ETOH and returned to SERF. In March, a Red Drum Gut Analysis Custody Form {Figure 2} was developed at MML to increase efficiency of tracking samples. Thereafter, the form accompanied samples sent to MML and those returned to SERF.
Results
Red drum from Vol usia County, Florida, were collected for gut content analysis between October 1992 through May 1993 . Gut contents from 254 red drum, measuring in total length from 7 mm to 282 mm, were examined . Total and standard lengths {mm} and weight {g} are summarized below.

Of these, 12.6 percent had empty guts {Table I} . Prey organisms most frequently encountered in the guts were in order of occurrence: I} polychaetes; 2} amphipods; 3} Corophium sp.; and, 4} Tanaidacea. The crustaceans were found in various stages of decomposition. When whole items were not available, identification was made by examining claws, rostrums and swimmerettes. Crustaceans identified to genus included Alpheus heterochaelis, Callinectes sp. and Corophium sp.
Fish were the second most abundant food item {Table I} {Figure 3} although most fish were decomposed and only scales, otoliths and vertebrae remained. The only fish which could be identified was a chain pipefish, Syngnathus louisianae {a. 4%} • A total of 11. 1 percent of the guts contained i terns grouped ina category designated as "Miscellaneous" {plant material, sand and marine debris}, which could not be identified, or were not placed in the fish or crustacean groups but incl uded insect parts, pl ant matter {bark, wood and undigested seagrass}, mud, bivalves, and polychaete parts. Seventy-eight percent of the fish guts analyzed contained some food item which was labeled as "unidentified" {Appendix I}.
Red drum from Bishop Harbor, Tampa Bay, were collected between September 1992 and May 1993. Gut contents from 421 red drum, which measured 23 mm to 282 mm TL, were examined. Length and weight measurements are summarized below.

Few red drum (5.7%) had empty guts (Table 2). Most of the red drum (26.6%) contained items categorized as "Miscellaneous", and included unidentified items, sand, mud, plant material (Tha7assia, algae and bark, twigs), insect parts, polychaete parts and mollusks. A total of 76.7 percent of the guts analyzed contained some type of food item which was labeled "unidentified". Red drum contained arthropod parts including snapping shrimp, grass shrimp, penaeid shrimp, tanaids, blue crabs, mud crabs, mysids (32.9% of guts contained) and amphipods (44.9% of guts contained). Crustaceans were from the order Tannaidacea or the families Alpheidae, Ampeliscidae, Corophiidae, Mysidae, Palaemonidae, Paratanaidae, Penaeidae, Portunidae and Xanthidae. Crustaceans identified to genus included A7pheus heterochae7is, Ampe7isca sp. (10.9% of the guts contained), Ca77inectes sp., Corophium sp., Leptoche7ia sp., Pa7aemonetes sp., and Penaeus sp. In addition, 11.2 percent of the fish guts cont~ined polychaetes.
Only 3.1 percent of the red drum contained fish parts. Most of the fish had been digested and only otoliths, scales and spines remained. One species which could be identified was Anchoa sp. (Appendix II) .
In addition, some red drum from Vol usia County and Bishop Harbor were improperly preserved, and the gut contents were so deteriorated as to preclude evaluation. Samples in this condition were noted.
Discussion
Crustaceans were abundant in all sizes of red drum examined from both Volusia County and Bishop Harbor (Figure 3 and Figure 4). Fish remains were also found in all sizes of red drum but were predominant in red drum from Vol usia County. These findings generally agree with previous studies by Pearson (1929), Gunter (1945), and Boothbay and Avault (1971). Peters and McMichael (1987) found amphipods to be the most abundant crustacean in juvenile red drum 30 mm to 75 mm, which agreed with our results. It is possible that unidentifiable organic matter which occurred frequently may have been the remains of digested fish, especially when crustacean remains were not evident. Additional items, such as plant material, mud, sand and bark were not considered food items and were perhaps inadvertently consumed. The red drum appeared to be indiscriminate feeders since most of the fish contained a combination of two or more types of food items. This agreed with observations made by Boothbay and Avault (1971) from red drum captured in a coastal marsh area in southeastern Louisiana.
3. Red Drum, Sciaenops oce71atus, Food Passage Experiments
Introduction
Currently no published data are available concerning the rate of digestion and food passage in fingerling red drum. This along with data on the amount of food found in a gut would be useful in estimating daily food consumption. These studies could provide additional information on their digestive physiology, behavior and energy requirements.

The purpose of this study was to determine the average time for a food item to pass through the digestive system of a fingerling red drum. This was tested in a preliminary trial and during three experiments. No attempts were made to estimate the influences of abiotic factors, such as temperature.
Materials and Methods
A preliminary trial and the three experiments were conducted in October and November 1992. Phase II (114-218 mm TL) red drum obtained from SERF were used. Aquaria (32-1iter) containing five fish each were positioned on water tables. Black plastic grate (2.5 cm in height) covered the aquarium bottoms which prevented fish from consuming beads off the bottom of an aquarium. Aeration was provided by a 2-\" fused glass airstone positioned 5.0 cm from the back panel. Parameters included a 12:12 photoperiod; temperature of 22.0°C ± 1.0°C; and salinity 33 ppt. Temperature (OC), salinity (ppt), pH, nitrite (mg/1), ammonia (mg/1) and dissolved oxygen (ppm) were recorded daily.
Originally, two methods for use in estimating food passage time were considered. The first was to use 10 micron, latex Microbeads® purchased by FMRI from Po1ysciences, Inc, and the second was to use 2 mm glass beads. The larger glass beads (2 mm) were selected for use in these experiments, because their larger size made them more visible than microbeads and they were cost-effective.
A preliminary trial was conducted to determine the period of time required for digestion (ingestion to excretion). Shrimp was selected as the food item to transport beads to the red drum. Orange and b1 ue gl ass beads (2 nvn) were inserted into 6 mm sections of peeled shrimp. In each of the experiments a mixture of 850 m1 trout chow, 60 m1 water and 120 medium shrimp was used as the food i tern to transfer the beads. The trout chow, water and shrimp were homogenized in a food processor, kneaded into a dough and formed into 7 mm diameter balls, each containing one glass bead.
Prior to the preliminary trial the fish were fed a diet of shrimp to satiation daily. At the start of the trial, fish in two aquaria (10 red drum) were fed 12 pieces of beaded shrimp. The aquaria bottoms were observed hourly and the number of beads and time found were recorded.
Experiment I was conducted to validate the results from the preliminary trial. Seven aquaria (35 fish) were used. During acclimation, a red tide bloom occurred in New Pass, Sarasota, resulting in the shut down of the Laboratory's incoming sea-water system. To compensate for this and to prevent poor water quality, the fish were fed each fifth day for two weeks instead of daily. The experiment began by p 1 aci ng fi fteen beaded ba 11 sin each aquari urn. Based on preliminary trial results and to examine fish at various stages of digestion they were terminated at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, and 24 hours post-feeding.
The data from Experiment II were used to compare gut passage times of fed versus starved red drum. Sixteen aquaria, each containing five red drum were labeled "starved" or "satiated". The satiated group of fish were fed daily for five days; the starved group was not fed. The experiment began at the time both groups were fed beaded food. At 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24 and 48 hours post-feeding five fish from each group were collected and examined.

In Experiment III a comparison was made of gut passage times of fed versus starved red drum but with different collection times from Experiment II. Six aquaria each containing five red drum were designated either starved or satiated. Five days prior to the experiment, the satiated group was fed dailyand the other group was starved. The experiment began at the time fish were fed beaded food. At 8, 16 and 24 hours post-feeding five from each group were collected and examined.
Several collection methods were attempted to determine the optimum procedure which would keep fish from regurgitating the beaded food; however, some variation in methods existed between Experiments I, II and III. At post-feeding collection times, red drum from the designated aquarium were euthanized in a basin containing 50 ml of Trance® (commercial compound) and 4 liters of seawater (ratio of 1:80). In Experiment I, fish collecte_d between 1-6 hours post-feeding were euthanized, measured (TL) and their guts were removed and preserved (70% ETOH). Fish from the 12 and 24 hour collections were frozen and eviscerated the following day. In Experiments II and III, after the fish were euthanized, an incision was made into the peritoneum from the anus to the pectoral girdle to allow ETOH to enter the abdominal cavity and preserve the gut. The whole fish was then preserved (70% ETOH) in a labelled jar for processing at a later date.
A Food Passage Analysis Form (Figure 5) was completed for each fish, including the data: feeding and collection times; wet weight (g), standard length (mm), and total length (mrn). The abdominal cavity was exposed and the gut was removed. Tota 1 gut 1 ength (mrn) (esophagus to anus), stomach 1 ength (mm) (esophagus to pyloric caeca) and intestine length (mm) (pyloric caeca to the anus) were recorded. The presence of beads (observed through the semitransparent wall of the gut) and the distance (mm) of each bead from the pyloric caeca or anus was recorded.
Results
In the preliminary trial, the first beads were observed in the aquaria after three hours post-feeding. By 24 hours post-feeding, 87.6 percent of the beads had been recovered indicating that food passage should be completed within 24 hours post-feeding. In Experiment I, most beads were found in the stomach of red drum at 24 hours post-feeding (last collection). This indicated that food passage took longer than 24 hours.
In Experiments II and II I, the number of beads found in the stomach/intestines of satiated versus starved red drum at 8, 16, and 24 hours post-feeding were as follows:

The results demonstrated that bead passage was not dependent on whether the fish had been starved or satiated.
It was noted that in the preliminary trial and in Experiments I, II and III, a statistical analysis (F-Test) of the data showed that red drum total lengths (Figure 6a) and weights (Figure 6b) correlated significantly (.01 level) with gut length. In addition, fish size (TL) showed no correlation (.07) to the number of beads in the gut.
Discussion
Red drum gut passage time could not be positively determined from the data. Gut passage patterns are likely to be complex and are affected by many variables (Jobling, 1986). This was demonstrated by the conflicting food passage times between the preliminary trial and Experiment I, which was attributed to the varying amounts of food consumed during acclimation. Experiments II and III were performed to test if food passage was slower in fi sh whi ch had been starved versus those which had been satiated prior to feeding them the beads. No positive correlations could be drawn from the results obtained. Further investigations are needed to make these determinations.
To determine the time required for food passage in fingerling red drum, further studies are needed concerning food types. Studies have shown that gut passage may vary with different nutritional and textural parameters (Jobling, 1986). Nutrient rich foods tend to move slower than low nutrition foods through the digestive tract (Jobling, 1986). In addition, indigestible components are the last to be emptied from the stomach (Pandain, 1967; Kionka, 1972; Gannon, 1976).
In MML experiments, the passage time for a indigestible and non-caloric component (glass bead) rather than the digestible food matter (shrimp and trout chow) was examined. More meaningful data may have resulted if the passage time of natural food items marked with a coloring agent had been examined.
