Being a parent with children of disabilities is a tough job Most people may believe it is difficult because of the medical and education concerns but there is more to it than that I find that the most difficult part of being a parent to children with disabilities is the unknown There are many unknowns

especially if you have children with autism Although more and more research is being released on autism every day itrsquos still the case that no one can provide you with a clear path or direction for your child

When I received the diagnosis for my first son it was hard emotionally (of course) but I felt weak because even if I provided my son with the best educational opportunities and the best treatment no one could tell me what to expect as he grew older If I did not know what to expect how

could I plan I am a planner The unknown was very difficult to deal with Would he catch up with his peers on an intellectual level Will he be able to appropriately interact in social settings Will he able to go to gain employment Will he have the opportunity to go to college

Worrying while it can be warranted can also be wasteful

Focus on today and love your children no matter what

At the beginning I worried quite a bit Although worrying can be warranted it also can be wasteful

If I only worried about tomorrow I was not doing my best because today was slipping away No one can be the perfect parent even if you try your hardest to be All you can do is do your best To do my best I had to change my mindset and learn to be flexible Although I will not know what to expect ultimately does it matter My sons are my sons and I will love them no matter what My number one priority is that they are happy Even if I do not have a clear direction of where we are going the most important thing is that we are together on this journey (regardless of where we end up)

A road trip through the many and varied Florida school districts

As much as I try to connect each education article to the overall theme for the month I am afraid that this article may be a stretch for ldquoCars of your Dreamsrdquo So here comes the stretch this article is based on a road trip which took place

in a car that I really like To be specific this car took my wife our three dogs and myself on a six-hour road trip from our house in South Florida to our new residence in Floridarsquos capital city When I worked for Broward Schools part of my job required driving from school to school which took me from Deerfield Beach High School in the Northeast to Everglades High School in the Southwest As I drove from school to school I would observe the surrounding neighborhoods and imagine what life was like for the communities each school serves For many reasons doing this helped me better support schools So naturally as I drove toward my new job with the Florida Department of Education I stated imagining what life and schools were like in each county that I drove through Hence the idea for this article was born

While it would take thousands of words to write about each public school district in Florida I can provide an overview in a few hundred words Florida has approximately 4200 public schools

over 2500000 students and 74 school districts The 74 school districts are compromised of a district for each of Floridarsquos 67 counties each of the four laboratory schools is a district and the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind the Okeechobee Youth Development Center and Florida Virtual School are each their own district Each laboratory school is associated with one of the following universities Florida Atlantic University Florida A amp M University Florida State University and the University of Florida

Florida has some of the largest school districts in the nation based on the number of students served In order of size Miami-Dade Public Schools Broward County Public Schools Hillsborough County Public Schools Orange County Public Schools and the School District

of Palm Beach County are ranked in the top fifteen largest

Florida has over 2500000 students fourteen of these have

fewer students in the entire district than Westons

Cypress Bay High School

school districts in the nation In South Florida Miami-Dade Public Schools serves about 314000 students Broward County Public Schools serves about 250000 students and the School District of Palm Beach County serves about 175000 students Some districts on the smaller end of the spectrum each serving between 900 and 1500 students include Jefferson County School District Liberty County School District and Franklin County School District I found about fourteen school districts that have fewer students in the entire district than Cypress Bay High School located in Weston Each of these districts and schools has its own social cultural political and economic needs It is interesting to think about the size and scope of the public school system in Florida and with the car of your dreams you can travel through each one

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBOT) is a mode of therapy in which the patient breathes 100 oxygen (O2) at pressures greater than normal atmospheric (sea level) pressure The patient is exposed to the same kind of pressure a SCUBA diver would experience at similar depths

How can Oxygen (O2) be a drug The elevated pressure and increased percentage (100) within the hyperbaric chamber results in a 10-15 fold oxygen increase in blood absorption which help new blood vessels grow and helps the bodyrsquos own defenses fight infections that it normally could not

Why does the therapy take so long TIME is our dose The deeper you go and longer you stay the more oxygen is absorbed into your tissues It takes time to get to the pressure and only then does your treatment time begin after you finish we have to decompress back to the surface

What does it feel likeAfter the door closes you will hear gas hissing like a lot of wind and feel pressure on your ears The patient must ldquoclearrdquo this pressure by holding their nose and blowing air back through the nose or swallowing some water or tilting your head back Just like a SCUBA diver or the same sensation you feel on an airplane prior to take off Once you reach the max pressure you will no longer have to clear your ears and may now relax watch TV a movie or even go to sleep

Are there any side effectsSome patients experience changes in eyesight If your eyesight changes for the better or gets worse not to worry this too will return to pre-treatment levels around 3-4 weeks after your treatments end Please keep all glasses or contact prescriptions the same

Will I get claustrophobicOur Sechrist 41rdquo chambers are the largest single person chambers made in the world They are constructed in the USA of thick clear 15rdquo acrylic with 3rdquo steel plates and piping that have a pressure capability of 66 feet of sea water Do not worry water is not used in our chambers since they are compressed with 100 oxygen The constant flow of oxygen gives the patient O2 to breathe cools the chamber and removes exhaled byproducts of respiration Once on the bottom we can control the flow to make it warmer or cooler you get to decide So please tell us if you are hot or cold and we will adjust accordingly

No electronics are allowed in the chamber Please leave them at home or silence them off vibrate while you are in the chamber Tasteful movies are allowed and we ask your respect for others when making your choice

What if I want to get out of the chamberYou are the boss if at any time you wish to come out of the chamber tell the staff immediately and you will be removed However it does take a few minutes to get you out so please talk to staff while we bring you out and understand your safety is our main concern

How many treatments will I need Everyone heals differently and the standard course is 20 treatments or one month we then reassess your progress and decide how best to proceed some take 60

your cityW Franklin Sheen (1864 - 1917) is credited with giving Pompano Beach its name He settled early in the West Palm Beach area and was a surveyor who also was involved in real estate transactions The story goes that while Sheen was doing survey work in the area he had a dinner of pompano with one of the local families and not wanting to forget the tasty fishs name and where he had it wrote pompano on his map Subsequently this was taken to be the settlements name

In this photograph Sheen is seen on his wedding day with his bride Jessie Griffin Sheen She was 13 years his junior and survived him by 45 years Both Franklin and Jessie are buried in West Palm Beach

A passion for the classicsCars They are a necessary evil in our communities With no public transit system to speak of South Floridians canrsquot realistically jump onto a tram or subway as a mode of getting from point A to point B It is for that reason I zip through the neighborhoods in my trusty Honda CRV without a care in the world Car of my dreams I would have to say no but when I think about vehicleshellipI canrsquot be pinned down

Itrsquos an appreciation thing Ferrari Lamborghini Maseratihellip names that may be thrown around when discussing dream cars Just a tad out of my price range and none would be my preference An acquaintance just purchased a Maserati last week and I took a moment to witness him climb in and rev up the engine in his new toy Was it impressive well of coursehellipbut could I spend that much on a new vehicle I donrsquot see it

A few months ago I attended a car show up in Daytona and my friend and I started that old Ford versus Chevy debate By the end of the afternoon I was thoroughly confused So many cool rat rods Bel Airs and vintage pickup trucks to look at If I only had a one-bedroom house with a six car garage everything would sort itself out

And then I recently learned about this marvelous car auction show Barrett Jackson Irsquom hooked While new vehicles and technology may appeal to some Irsquove got to tip my proverbial hat to most all vehicles born before oh say 1970

What makes old vehicles so interesting to me is their character They are bursting at the seams with character and a uniqueness that cannot be matched with cars being manufactured now All too often when a new model vehicle comes out the comment ldquoit looks just like (insert any other car here)rdquo follows the unveiling

I am by no means a vintage car aficionado But if you ask me to describe a 1934 Ford Coupe or a 1957 Chevy Bel Air a plethora of descriptive adjectives will start to flow Classic cars have those distinct chrome grills flared wheel wells and never duplicated angles And the older they get the more precious and valued they become

Interestingly enough this brings me to a comparison of cars and people Ageism age-defying anti-aging Why is it that we try so hard to stay young in America rather than celebrating the value and appeal of aging gracefully The stories that come with those years lived can be amazing if we only take the time to listen to them

So the next time you decide to walk through one of those car shows take the time to not only appreciate the care and passion that went into the vehicle but also take a moment to introduce yourself and spend a moment with the owner who has restored it or protected it for all these years I guarantee the person is just as unique and interesting if you get to know them

Build Something Solid

How many people want to work for the rest of their lives Irsquom sure yoursquore not jumping at the chance to say yes Building something solid takes a ton of thinking dreaming mapping and committing If you follow these steps yoursquore well on your way to ldquoliving the dreamrdquo so to speak Keep in mind that everyone has a different idea (definition) of what a dream business is and what ldquoliving the dreamrdquo means Working less and traveling more with my family is what Irsquom working towards If I understand the goal or end result all I have to do is map out a vision (strategy) that backs into my goal What is the end result for you Do you want to sell your business Do you want to be a franchise Do you want to work from your beach house in Malibu How are you working towards that end result or goal to build something solid

Everything Takes Time

Whenever we turn on the TV read the paper or scroll through our social media feeds we see what appears to be ldquoinstant celebrity successrdquo from Bethany Frankel to Oprah What we donrsquot see is the failure the sacrifice the loss the thinking the dreaming and the hard work Building your dream business (or life) takes time So either buckle up and enjoy the journey or start looking for a 9 to 5 with a great salary 401k and vacation time

When did you know without a doubt that you wanted to act write host and produce

Well its funny As a little girl I always used to put on shows using my siblings and cousins I used to daydream about it As I became older I focused on business In fact all my internships in college were in Georgetown Washington DC at brokerage firms Then one day a man waved me over while I was walking home from the gym I thought he needed directions It was BB King He and his crew asked me to join him for dinner He told me when I graduated I should move to Los Angeles and pursue acting It was wild Then two weeks later I stopped to grab a slice of pizza on the way home from class and noticed there was a huge line The owner grabbed me and brought me to the front and said Youre with Will Smith and his crew right I said no and then a man walked up and said but you should be Will was in DC for work and they said the same thing - Move to LA when you graduate and heres our info You should be an actress I began trying to conceive of leaving behind a prestigious career to move to LA to become an actress and thought gosh this is nuts right A week later the manager at the brokerage firm I was working at called me into his office I was prepared to get a job offer What I wasnt prepared for was him telling me Nicole have you ever thought of being an actress I know it sounds weird but think about it This all happened in the same month By that point I began to realize maybe this was part of my path

What inspires you as an entertainer

I love roles where you see strong powerful women It doesnt matter what sector they work in Weve seen them as attorneys FBI agents lawyers business people heck we even see them as mothers but I love to see them and am excited to see more and more of them And candidly if they happen to play these roles with great style Im really pulled in

When did you realize you had reached your goals as an entertainer

Well Last year my word for the year was RECEIVE I pushed myself to receive every opportunity in front of me (that wasnt ethically questionable) I cannot believe what an amazing year 2015 was for me I havent reached my goals as an entertainer yet but Ive reached a mindset thats bringing me there and making the journey fascinating

What was your favorite role to date and why

In regards to acting roles Ill keep you posted Theres some amazing things in the works When it comes to hosting Ive interviewed so many interesting people This past year Id have to say Gary Busey and Tito Ortiz really stand out Clearly other people really liked the Tito Ortiz interview as well because Im covering some of the MMAs this year How awesome is that

What do you most enjoy about your career

There are so many things I truly love about my career I feel so blessed I wake up excited about my work I feel stimulated by it Its always new Personally I need to feel like Im always growing and not stagnant For me this vertical easily allows that Theres a constant flush of new people new concepts even emotions to explore
