For the past three months, nine facilitators trained by artist Judy Chicago and Judy’ husband, photographic artist Donald Woodman have been working with 70 participants at various studios in the Colony and in Claremont to create works that embody their visions of the future. These include both individual and collaborative works. There was a rigorous selection process for both the facilitators and the participating artists. Their media include painting, sculpture, digital art, instillations, and performing art. Now, Envisioning the Future will culminate in a number of exhibitions and performances from January 10 through February 29, 2004. Venues re located throughout the Arts Colony, as shown in the box at left. Other venues include the Millard Sheets Gallery and sites in Claremont.
In the best tradition of classical art (and PVAA’s pioneering effort last year), the project will feature a “Salon des Refuses”, the “On the Edge” exhibition at the SoHo’s sister gallery, the 57 Underground Gallery. .Matt Jackson, facilitator for the digital media group, will curate the “Salon”. Students of the Cal Poly Art Department will also present “Parallel Projects” at various locations on the main Cal Poly campus. Visit the project’s website at http://www.envisioningthefuture.org/index.htm for additional information, or contact director Cheryl Bookout at (909)203-9699.
