Some people think that a new year automatically signifies a time for change. For me, it couldn’t be more opposite. After the holidays, you go right back into the work slump. The days are shorter, the weather is still colder and although everything around you seems new, you may not be feeling that way.

If your resolution was to go to the gym more, however, the weath-er is a turn off, don’t sweat it. I think the term “spring cleaning” best justifies this. There is nothing that makes you feel better than warmer weather and longer days. You’ll also be inspired to go for that after work cocktail or get together with your friends instead of staying under the duvet.

I took the opportunity to clean out my closet and get rid of things I never wear and probably never will wear. I told myself to “get rid of the bad, keep the good and make room for the new.” This doesn’t just have to apply to your wardrobe but it can apply to unhealthy relationships and/or lifestyles. Take the time to figure out what you need to do to get to where you want to be and use the new season as a reason to do it!

Concerts are a highlight of the season. Everyone gets excited for them and then there’s talk of what happened for months after the show (it definitely feels like that if you didn't get a chance to see the show). For music lovers, the beer drinking, warm weather and live music from talented musicians is sheer bliss. And if you’re like me, you can't wait to put on a paisley printed, loose-fitted dress, with a leather, motorcycle jacket, and maybe even some rain boots— because you have to be prepared for anything! After much deliberation, these concerts we’ve decided to highlight, are highly anticipated this year. If these performers are coming to your city, or a city close enough for a road trip with your friends or even your significant other, don’t miss out!

After their highly anticipated Grammy performance, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae are going on tour together. If the Grammy’s taught us anything, it showed us that talented, young musicians do exist. As newbie’s to the industry, this tour is sure to draw out large crowds and provide much talk. Although there is no date in Toronto, you can check out the May 22nd date in Windsor, Ontario.

Within the past decade, the music industry has seen an influx of “rappers” and artists taking over the scene with catchy one-liners that make up about 75 per cent of the content in an entire song. Based on record sales, consumers seem to like their music the way they like their food: Fast, which often means a quick fix that sometimes compromises quality. The music industry has been spewing out music and artists like products on a conveyer belt. With the success of songs like, “Crank Dat” that went on to top charts and sell millions of ring tones, many artists (Ice T, Nas to name a few) took to media outlets to profess how Hip-Hop had lost its way.

Fast-forward to 2011 swag isn’t the only thing label execs look for rather, profound lyrics with the ability to convey a message are highly sought after. This is what music and lifestyle mogul, Jay-Z (Sean Carter) saw in North Carolina native, J.Cole.

The two met after Cole’s manager reached out to Carter with hopes of impressing someone with such clout in the industry. After the meeting, J.Cole’s life changed drastically. “My manager Mark played him this song I have called Lights Freeze and when Jermaine Lamarr Cole was born in Frankfurt, Germany and lived there for less than a year before moving to Fayetteville, North Carolina. While growing up with a career-oriented mother, he always had his eyes set on education, which he notes as instrumental in shaping his own career. Cole attended St. John’s University in New York on an academic scholarship. “School was always important, that came from my mom. I knew I was going to college, I knew I was going to graduate so that was a no brainer,” he says. “My kids are going to college, I know that for a fact.” This same drive and ambition led Cole to graduate magna cum laude. he heard it, he was instantly interested,” Cole recalls. He

became the first artist to sign a recording contract with Carter’s label, Roc Nation, which now boasts other young artists like Willow Smith.

After the success of his latest mixtape, Friday Night Lights, J.Cole began touring and making appearances and quickly moved to the forefront of the Hip-Hop lens. While his quick rise to success came as a startling surprise to him, so did the mentions and rumors on blogs that he was in a serious relationship and had become engaged. [Laughing] “No it’s not true. I’m not engaged. That’s another part of the game that I’m going to have to get used to, like I’m honored that they even wanna talk about me but on the other side I’m a little annoyed. But that’s something I’ll have to deal with if I want to be successful in the game. Hopefully I can ignore them [gossip blogs].”

While being placed under scrutiny of gossip blogs and sites, Cole notes how instrumental online media has been in catapulting his career in a way he couldn’t have on his own. “They’ve [blogs] been very important. I remember when Twodopeboys.com put my Come up mixtape on their website. I was at school and I Googled my name and saw that they put it up there with a poster. From there I thanked them and kept sending them stuff. They put The warm up on there and this is all before I even got signed,” Cole says. “I would put up a song and I would get 6-10 comments and be so happy; now it’s funny there’s 1100 comments on Friday Night Lights. They’ve been very important (not just twodopeboys) but all these blogs were helpful in building my name, spreading the word and everything.” This is the case for many artists, as online media and video sharing sites make it possible for anyone with a computer to hear and “like” your music, mixtape or whatever your craft. Last summer, Cole headlined his first major tour without even having an album out. “Its nuts. Los Angeles was sold out. The big cities are always cool but it’s incredible to go to the small cities and see people come out because I don’t have an album out. It’s a cool experience to see my fanbase on tour.” While he’s come a long way since 2007, J.Cole is readying himself for an artist’s dream, the release of his debut album, which he describes as an evolution from his mixtapes. “All my music hits the soul in some way, right now I’m trying to create a balance because I have songs that are really emotional –kinda personal and heartfelt– so I’m trying to balance that out so it’s not too heavy. I don’t want it to be a mood album so I’m trying to balance that with some aggressive songs, fun songs. It’s sounding incredible. I don’t wanna go crazy with the rap features either.” Though he knows who he is as an artist, Cole is still navigating his way through the fashion scene. When asked about his personal style, Cole is takes a deep breath and laughs: “When I was in college, I used to care but then I got super broke so I couldn’t think about clothes because I had to pay rent. My personal style is still evolving but I love Jordans, jeans and jackets. If I throw on a nice jacket with sneakers, that’s me. Mind you that’s within the last year because I used to wear straight t-shirts and polo’s.” With his critically acclaimed mixtapes, features and not to mention an album that is sure to get rave reviews, Cole’s humility, wit and intelligence allow him to shine brightly in such a heavily saturated industry.

Sleeping with the enemyUnderstanding the dynamics of a re-lationship is important. Understand-ing the dynamics of arelationship where you’re not only lovers, but rivals, is something com-pletely different. It’s riskybusiness.

As tempting as it may be to run home and tell your other half about the ex-citing stuff that goes onwithin the corridors of your office, there are some things you should keep to yourself.

You’d love to cuddle on the couch over a glass of wine and talk about that brilliant businessstrategy you and your boss came up with; or complain about how they’re forcing you to develop alame new product.

But stop! Is this more than random couch talk? Could this be “giving an advantage to yourcompetitors?”

You’re not aloneHuman resource specialist, Patricia Cubellis, says this type of conflict is fairly common. “It’s anatural flow of things, especially in small industries,” she said.

The first thing she advises couples to do is to know what your company considers as the good, the bad and the ugly. “Ask for a copy of your compa-ny’s confidentiality agreement,” says Cubellis.

This document may be also called “business conduct standards.” It’s usu-ally not that long, ranging from one to fifteen pages. Reading it is something you should do, although you may not enjoy it. Because, as Patricia explains; in this case, ignorance isn’t bliss. ¨If an incident happens— depending on how severe the damage is— you could get anything ranging from a verbal warning, to a temporary suspension. ¨But if the damage is too great, your job is on the line.

Your contract could be terminated. And with that, your reputation ruined. ¨Basically, make sure you don’t do an-ything that they consider damaging to them,” added Cubellis.

Come dinner time, how do you sit across the table with the person whose workplace you were thinking of crushing for a third of your day?

“Now you’re 9 to 5 enemies.”

Do the job in your personal lifeIt’s hard to restrain yourself from talk-ing about the nits and bits of your day with your significant other. After all, sharing your life with them is the point of any relationship. But how do you deal with this situation? It’s not like you’re going to wear a muzzle after work, and Cubellis agrees: “Make sure that whatever you do disclose, is not going to get to the hands of the wrong people.”

Another piece of advice? If you’re not sure of what to do next, err on the side of caution. “If it’snot publicly disclosed, keep it to your-self,” explained Cubellis. Because even if your loved one is avault, we all can slip.

Let’s face it. You’re sort of walking on a minefield here. What’s even harder is that the minefield isin your own quarters.

The trust issueAlthough you would have a normal tendency to think about it, the first thing you’ve got to engravein your mind is that this is not about trust.

The second step is to engrave it in your better half ’s mind.

Your silence may come across to them as exactly that: a lack of trust.

If the issue comes up, have a chat and explain. The key is to understand that you’re not keepingsecrets from each other— you’re being professional.

And in the end, it’s not about keep-ing your job— it’s also about keeping your relationship.

Is jeopardizing your relationship for bringing more than just work home at 5pm, worth it? Endingup unemployed, with a tarnished reputation and a broken relationship is the real penalty here.

If it hurts your job, it will hurt your relationship. Save both by keeping your lips sealed!

Braving Spring Style

Still, there are no excuses for men to be fearful of fashion. Even though they’ll never admit to their sartorial uncertainties (i.e. if they can mix checks and stripes, if a pair of jeans makes theirass look fat), it’s inevitable they won’t leave the house naked.

For men who aren’t afraid of a change of clothing, there are plenty of options for those whodon’t mind braving the racks for spring.

For a modern touch, throw out the baggy jeans and find something slimmer; less fabric begets a leaner silhouette. Make the length shorter, cuff them, and don’t wear socks to show off that sexy ankle; the new erogenous zone. A white shirt (poplin, polo), black or navy jacket (fitted to the body) and a pair of loafers complete the look.

Men become ferocious animals when confronted with physically demanding challenges, but when it comes to matters of style, they’re scared and retreat with their tails between their legs.

There’s nothing wrong with black and white. They’re always in style and eve-ryone looks good in them, no matter what their age or size. For those looking for an after six look, add a touch of denim – another perennial classic.

This casual neutral mixes and matches with anything. To get more out of the colour, think of the desert sand and dunes. A little tan goes a long way.

In fact, colour is scientifically proven to raise feel-good endorphins (and who doesn’t want to be happy?). Whether it’s on a stripe, check, or small pattern, colour doesn’t have to kill corneas – not everyone feels comfortable in neon.

Retailers dedicate whole sections of their stores to khaki. It’s a popular pick for many men- simple and easy.

Instead of picking up a typical pair of chinos, use the colour on a loose top made of linen or cotton. Throw on a long scarf and wrap it around the neck and shoulders. Imagine Lawrence of Arabia for today – a rakish man taking on the world – with leather accents and a pair of comfortable sandals.

Wearing bright colours isn’t as painful as it seems.

A little yellow, orange or pink on top or on the bottom is a good start, and balance it with a neutral (white, black, cream). Day or night, colour can make any man feel good about himself and nothing looks better than a smartly-dressed man with a smile on his face.

With the high number of mid-size options available on the auto market today, the Buick Regal is the only one to offer modern technology and a stylish design aesthetic that will grab the attention of many.

The 2011 Charger is an original breed of sports car – one designed with four doors, instead of two.

Chrysler decided to go retro when designing their Charger with a body that pays homage to the iconic 1968-70 models with strong character lines and 3D scallops. The look is par-ticularly striking from the rear thanks to an outline of 164 LEDs.

Inside, the scooped shape of the dash is a modern twist on the old style, especially given the option of a bright, crisp LCD screen that operates the navigation, audio system and a Bluetooth-equipped phone. The 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated direct-injection gasoline engine with 160 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque can be bolted to a five-speed manual or dual-clutch transmission. The independent suspension results in one of the most well-planted compacts in the segment, and the optional handling package begs the car to sling around a set of twisty roads.

The fun-to-fling compact car segment is a small one, but the Ford Focus proves that no matter what the size, there is an option that’s zippy for the budget-conscious.

There's no mistaking the Ford Focus for a yawn-inducing commuter from the outside. The designers graced both the four-door and five-door body styles with menacing looks, ready to take on the competition. Inside, easy-to-read gauges are supplemented by a small LCD screen nestled between the tachometer and the speedometer. Having ergonomic HVAC controls and comfy seating is a plus.

The Ford Focus brings a level of sophistication, comfort and handling to the market and is a compact car made for those who want more than basic transportation from their vehicles.
