Water PollutionWhat do we mean by "waterpollution?"

How might motor boats affectwater pollution?

    Water pollution is the

contamination bodies of water(e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater).

Water pollution occurs whenpollutants are discharged

directly or indirectly into waterbodies without adequatetreatment to remove harmfulcompounds.

Propellers may disturb the lake orriver bottom directly, or indirectlythrough the wash or turbulencetheyproduce, especially in shallow

water. This may affect water clarityby increasing the amount ofsedimentparticles in the water ormay cause nutrients that are stored

in the sediments, such asphosphorus, tobecome availablefor algal growth. Waves created by

watercraft may contribute toshoreline erosion, whichcan cloudthe water.

Shoreline ErosionWhat do we mean byshoreline erosion

    How might boats affectshoreline erosion?

Shoreline erosion is a term that

refers to the process by whichsoil p articles located alongriverbanks orlakeshoresbecome detached andtransported by water currents or

    wave energy.

Boats produce a wake, which may

in turn create waves that propagateoutward until dissipated at theshoreline. Wave height and other

wave characteristics vary withspeed, type of watercraft, size ofengine, hull displacement, anddistance from shore. Propellerturbulence from boats operating innear shore areas may also erodeshorelines by destabilizing thebottom.

Aquatic WildlifeWhat do we mean by"aquatic wildlife?"

    How might boats affectaquatic wildlife?

    Aquatic wildlife refers to

animals that spend part or all oftheir life in aquaticenvironments, or dependuponthem for food or reproduction.Examples include waterfowl, shorebirds, herons, eagles, loons, turtles, frogs, and insaltwater systems includemanatees, seals, and dolphins.Fish will be addressed in aseparatesection.

Boats may have direct impacts on wildlifethrough contact with propellers or

disturbance of nests along theshorelineby excessive wave action. Disturbance bythe fast movement of watercraft or eventhe presence ofhumans near feedingground or breeding areas may preventcertain species, especially birds frombeingsuccessful. Noise or harassmentmay cause some wildlife to vacate nests,

leaving eggs or young vulnerabletopredators. Indirect effects may includedestruction of habitat or food source inlittoral areas, or impairedwater quality.

Noise PollutionWhat do we mean by NoisePollution?"

    How might boats affect NoisePollution?

    Noise pollution is excessive,

displeasing human, animal, ormachine-created environmentalnoise that disrupts the activityor balance of human or animallife

Boats engine produse a hugenoise. and secondly marine life

is extremely sensitive to noisepollution. Due to their extremereliance on underwater soundsfor basic life functions likesearching for food and mate

and an absence of anymechanism to safeguard themagainst it, underwater noisepollution disrupts marine life inmore serious ways.
