Disappointing loss for Polo boys in OvertimeSubmitted Article

The Polo Panther basketball teams hosted the DeKalb Tigers last Thursday evening at Polo High School. The Polo boys worked hard the entire game to beat the strong DeKalb team.  DeKalb came out aggressive and was up 8 on Polo, with a score of 12-4 early in the game.  Polo battled back and tied up the score 15-15 with 5:58 on the clock in the second quarter when junior Mason Misel sank two free throws.  Polo gained the lead late in the second quarter for the first time.  A low scoring game between the two well matched teams ended in a tie 36-36 at the final buzzer.  In overtime the DeKalb team ended up stealing the win from Polo with a final score of 43-38.  Parker Smith led the Panthers with 19 points and 9 rebounds, Jack Pile added 14 points and 4 rebounds, Drew Williams 12, Justin Thompson 3 and 5 rebounds and Mason Misel 2 with 5 rebounds.  Coach Rains had this to say after the game, “I felt that with better execution we might have had a different outcome.  We are still learning and hopefully soon we will get the desired results. A disappointing loss in overtime.”     The Polo girls came out strong and beat the Tigers 55-21. Four Polo players scored for their team in this high scoring game for Polo.  Senior Maria Rains led her team with 16 points and 5 rebounds, junior Danielle Allen added 15 points and 5 rebounds to push her team to a victory, Sidney Copeland added 9, and Brooke Jones 6.  Coach Keith stated, “We came out and played extremely well against a good DeKalb team.  The girls endured some tough practices over break and their attention to detail really showed in the DeKalb game.  I was very proud of all their efforts on that night!  It was a big win that we hope to continue to build on.”

Sophomore Parker Smith #10 led his team with 19 points.

Excelsior Springs Area Career Center Holds Mock Interviews

Submitted ArticleOn Tuesday, January 14, representatives from the

business and industry sectors stepped in to interview seniors and interested juniors in their respective career and technical programs during a mock interview at Excelsior Springs Area Career Center (ESACC). Liz Smith, ESACC Career Services Coordinator, and Stacy Holtzclaw, ESACC English IV instructor, set up this event to help prepare students for lifetime interviewing skills.

Although the Career Center has held student job interviews for many years, this is only the second year that representatives from students’ program areas were the ones to interview the students. This practice serves students better because they have individuals that ask technical and skill questions along with the general interviewing questions. Even if high school students do not have much job experience, they need to be prepared to answer interview questions. This opportunity gave students the chance to see how they would perform in a real interview without an actual job on the line.

Students were scored on their professionalism, which included professional dress, their resume, and their responses to their interview questions. They prepared for the interview in English IV class, which is integrated technical English offered at the Career Center, where they discussed all aspects of job preparation and prepared responses for interview questions. All seniors were required to participate in the interview and received a grade for it in their English class. Garret Syler, President of Syler Construction, interviewed students in the afternoon Carpentry/Construction Technology class. Garret stated, “I’m glad to be a part of the mock interviews at Excelsior Springs Career Center. It’s an inspiration to see such promising students; it gives us great hope for the future. “

The top student from each judge will go on to a second round of interviews to be held on Thursday, January 23. This time, all interviewers will face a panel of five judges. The top three candidates will go on to compete at the District SkillsUSA contest in February. Randy Barnes, Carpentry and Construction Technology instructor, stated, “The benefit that the students receive from practicing real life interviews with actual business and industry professionals is immeasurable.”

The Career Center hopes to continue this partnership with local communities by partnering with business and industry members to offer job shadowing and internship opportunities to students. If you are interested in partnering with the Excelsior Springs Area Career Center or would like to find out more information, please contact Liz Smith at (816) 630-9240 ext. 6 or [email protected].

YMCA Youth Basketball Season: Preparing Future Panther Players

By: Aimee Walker

Once again parents within the Polo community have come together to make a YMCA youth basketball team for girls grades third through fourth. This will give the children an opportunity to expand and improve their basketball abilities. The coaches this year are Debby Misel and Wally Aubrey. There are two Polo teams, the black and white teams. Debby coaches the girls white team, while Wally coaches the girls black team.

The youth players started out the season with a game in Chillicothe, Missouri on Saturday January 11th. The Polo black team played against the Polo white team. Debby’s team lost a hard fought game with an ending score of eight to twelve. All of the girls had a great learning experience and had fun at the Chillicothe YMCA playing basketball with their friends.

This organization is a great opportunity to get a head start on becoming a Panther athlete and definitely helps them get an understanding of teamwork, dedication, and having fun while being active with their friends. Being involved on the team will give them the chance to broaden their knowledge and skill of basketball. The teams will have a game every Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. for the next six weeks. If you get the chance, come out and support these future Panther basketball players!

GUESS THE PANTHER!!

Elementary

This Panther is in third grade. Her teacher is Mrs. Dixon. She loves the movie Frozen and the show Jessie. In school she loves to learn about math. As a matter of fact, she just passed her two and three multiplication tables. When our Panther grows up, she wants to be a teacher just like her mom. HINT, her mom is a teacher here at Polo. In her free time, this Panther loves to be a cheerleader and hangout with her little brother Duncan. Can you guess who this Panther is?

Middle School

This Panther is an 8th grader. She has a four sibling enrolled here at Polo. Her activities include cheering, softball, track, and basketball. Her best friend is Drake Burton. This Panther dreams of becoming a math teacher because math is her favorite subject. Her best quality is that she will tell the truth even if it is not wanted. Who is this Panther?

High School

This Panther is a senior! Her best friend is Cati Boruch. More importantly her brodette is Ms. Arth. After graduation, her plan is to go to cosmetology school and learn how to do hair and nails. Her favorite movie is The Notebook. Her celebrity crush is Jason Statham; who can blame her! The last hint

ASK ALLIHow do I make friends? Be yourself. If they don’t like you for you, they

shouldn’t be your friend. Treat others how you want to be treated. This is

easier said than done, but just do the best to be the better person. Join clubs or sports. People normally with the same interest normally ‘’click’’.

Ask questions. Don’t be annoying and ask a lot of questions but find out similar interest and talk about them. This make talking to them easier and you both will have something to talk about.

How do I ask out a girl?

Make sure they like you. Asking out a girl may be a little awkward if she doesn’t like you.

Figure out things that she is interested and talk to her.

Make sure you smell good. No one wants a stinky boy.

Talk to her friends. Get to know her a lot better and see if she is talking to someone else.

Be respectful while being around her and talking about her. Let others know you like her.

If you get the chance to meet her parents, make a

Varsity Girls BasketballBy: Billie Thompson

This year the Varsity Girls Basketball team has a lot of girls, which means there will always be competition for a varsity spot. There is only one freshman that dresses out and that is Jenni Farmer. She said, “The change from middle school to high school is a little nerve wracking sometimes. The competition is a lot different.” Jenni’s favorite part of being on the team is having the chance to play with the older girls and better athletes from different schools.

The girls don’t have a set captain but they rotate it with the seniors and junior Sidney Copeland. I asked Sidney what is expected of a captain, she replied, “A captain needs to make sure that everyone has a positive attitude and to be a leader. Also, a captain needs to always try hard to do their best because others look up to them.” She also said, “All the girls are talented.” She also indicated that all of them want to win and they work well as a team.

One senior this year for Polo is Anna Way. I asked her if she saw a lot of talent with this group of girls she replied, “Yes, because we are very good about putting our mind to whatever goals need to be accomplished.” Anna’s favorite thing about the team is that there isn’t much drama. One thing that Anna loves about basketball is that it is a team sport.

Upcoming Games:Feb. 4 at South Harrison Feb. 6 at BraymerFeb. 11 at Polo vs. Stanberry (Senior Night)The Musical Notes Continue!

By: Lisa Tackett

Throughout the year the Polo Pride Marching Band has gone on three different band trips. The Polo Marching Band consists of thirty students, seven being 7th graders. In January band did a fundraiser at Applebee’s in Excelsior Springs. They are earning money for new band uniforms. They also had their GRC Honor Band auditions on the 15 th. Coming up in February the 5th-8th graders will be participating in the Richmond Jr. High contest it will be located in Richmond, MO, on February 8th, 2014. Also the high school band will be playing at the Senior Night for basketball on February 11th.

Mr. Dunker is the band teacher here at Polo R-7. He teaches the 5th-6th grade band, 7th-8th grade music, 7th-12th grade band, Jazz band, and advanced band. I had a chance to talk with him about the band and ask him a couple questions. I first asked him how many competitions the band has done so far this year. He said, “The whole band has done three so far. The biggest one is when Matt Vaughan will be playing in the all district band.” I asked him what his favorite band contest was. He replied, “My favorite is the Missouri Days Festival because the kids enjoy it with all the booths and with the festival going on.”

I had a few minutes where I talked with a band student about band. I asked her what her favorite competition has been and why. She responded to that question by saying, “My favorite competition so far has been the Trenton’s Missouri Days Festival because of all the different stands you can visit.” Another question that I asked her was if high school band is different than middle school band. Her response was, “Yes, high school band is a lot more difficult mostly because of the level of music and the marching.” My final question was what her favorite part about band is. She replied, “My favorite part about band is the trips. Apart from playing in the competition, it is fun to watch some of the other bands perform. Some of the trips you have other things to do such as walk around.” The 7th-12th grade band will be playing at the Senior Night here in the high school gym on February 11th, so if you are free come down and watch the band and basketball teams play.

Boy’s Polo Basketball.By: Mikayla Reavis

The boy’s Polo basketball team started out the New Year with a Lathrop tournament. They played on January 13th at 9:00pm. and January 15th. Polo boys took a loss for the first and second game of the tournament but they kept up a fight and never gave up. This year, the team has stepped up their game and more focused. They practice almost every day of the week to keep their minds fresh and their bodies prepared for the next game to come.

The boys give it their all when they play basketball. They play with endurance and their heads in the game at all times. There is never a dull moment when the team is focused and ready to play! This has been a great year for the Polo Panthers boys’ basketball season!

Valentine’s DayBy: Kaitlyn Adams

I’ve talked to some of the girls here at Polo High School and asked them if they expected anything from their significant others for Valentine’s Day. They all said yes. I asked them what they expect from their significant others on Valentine’s Day. They said that on Valentine’s Day they would like guys to get them flowers, stuffed animals, chocolate, jewelry, and cards. I also asked people what’s the first word that popped up in their head when they thought of Valentine’s Day. They said romantic, gifts, love, hearts, pink and red, flowers, and chocolate. I also asked a couple of guys what they thought about Valentine’s Day and some guys response was that they didn’t like it because they didn’t have a girlfriend to give anything too. Other guys said that girl worry too much about Valentine’s Day.

The History of Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day came from a priest named

Valentinus. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than married ones with families, he made it illegal for young men to get married. Valentinus went behind his back and performed marriages for young lovers in secret.

H1N1 Facts and PreventionBy: Madison Curp

Each year, thousands of people die from the flu. Without the proper care, procedure, and cautions this number could grow rapidly. H1N1 is a strain of the influenza virus that first appeared in 2009. Since then the virus had seemingly disappeared from the United States, until now.

Michelle Curp, RN, has given five helpful tips to avoid getting H1N1. These tips are:

1. Wash your hands- Soap and water or hand sanitizer help to kill the germs that reside on your hands from anything you may have touched. This is the best way to avoid the illness.

2. Do not share food or drinks- Sharing your food or drink with someone puts you in direct contact with any germs and illnesses that they may have.

3. Get a flu shot- Getting the flu shot lets your body get used to fighting the virus before you ever get it.

4. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze- This is a common courtesy to ensure that if you happen to be carrying the influenza virus that you do not spread it to anyone else.

5. Do not go to school sick- Going to school sick not only puts others in danger of getting sick, but also puts you in danger of becoming more sick. When you are sick your immune system is already trying to fight a virus, so that makes it easier for you to get sick with something else as well, which always means trouble.

Keep your friends and family safe this flu season. These

Middle School BasketballBy: Hannah Beshears

As the middle school basketball season comes to an end, both teams can say that they had a good season overall. The girl’s win/loss record was 1-9. The boy’s win/loss record was 4-6. Although the scores of the two teams were not perfect, they had a great season learning new things and improving in weak areas. I had a chance to talk to Greg Keith, the girls’ middle school basketball coach, and he told me that the girls’ basketball team did improve a great deal throughout the season during the games and practices. Greg Keith said “I think you can always try harder no matter what. But they did a good job at showing up to practice and trying their best.” I did not have a chance to talk to the boys’ basketball coach but they also did a very good job this season.

Even though the season did not end how the middle school teams and coaches would have liked, they still worked hard and played their best.

Polo Youth WrestlingBy: Joely Hicks

The Polo Youth Wrestling club has twenty-four Wrestlers in their club this year. Max Hicks is the wrestling coach and is very excited he has all of these kids in the club. Max said the tournaments have been going well and he is very excited for the Polo Wrestling Tournament February 8th and would like for everyone try to come a cheer on their youth wrestlers.

Wrestlers Rocked the House at Rock Port

By: Jessica Farmer

A couple weeks ago, the Polo Varsity wrestlers had a nice long ride all the way up to Rock Port. They arrived Friday before the tournament for an overnight stay. Coach Johnson was excited and talked about the tournament for quite some time. Full of confidence in these boys, he had high hopes!

For anyone that came up to the tournament, they would probably say it was worth it. The Panthers started out very strong and were obviously prepared! The referees were blowing whistles and smacking the mats left and right with pins! After a 30 minute break, the tournament brackets were being set, and the placing rounds were about to begin.

Throughout the whole tournament, Polo was in the lead with team points. Everyone needed to do their best to keep the points rolling in to stay on top! That’s exactly what the Panthers did. Every wrestler’s last match was their make it or break it point, so there was lots of aggressiveness for the crowd to see! Wiley Martin had one of the most entertaining matches to watch! His championship match was against an opponent that wasn’t just a walk in the park and seemed to turn into a knockout drag out at one point. Both wrestlers were very determined to come out on top and it was a great fight! Wiley was crowned champion of his weight class!

Polo walked out of Rock Port with great success! Gunnar Martin fought hard and captured 5th place in his weight class. Justice Burton, Brandon Latimer, and Wesley Crawford took 4th

place. Caleb Bolling, Brandon Richardson, Israel Alsbury, Gavin Walker, and Alex Myers were able to snag 2nd place. Wiley Martin, Jacob Hicks, and Jake Leonard were the best of the best in each of their weight classes and the champions of the day. Everyone worked very hard to make Polo the top scoring school and the 2014 champions at Rock Port for the second year in a row!

For such a long trip from home, there was a very large crowd of Panther fans. After the tournament, medals were handed out and many pictures were taken. The Polo wrestlers, coaches, and managers all stood together for a group picture. The proud community that came to support the boys was also able to squeeze in for a few snaps. All in all, the Panthers definitely rocked the house at Rock Port!

President’s DayBy: Hailey Mattivi

The day when George Washington first became president, is Presidents Day. It is also right around his birthday. The day honors the life and the work of the first president of the United States. President’s Day was established in 1885.

People traditionally celebrated it on February 22nd on Washington’s Birthday. Most federal companies take this day off. In 1968 things changed when the 90th congress determined to create a uniform system of federal Monday holidays. It’s funny because Washington’s Birthday was on February 22nd, 1732 and Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th.

People back then voted for a law that the three holidays in February would be on Monday in February. The law took effect in 1971.

Polo was led by junior Danielle Allen with 17 points, junior Sidney Copeland added 12 points and 6 rebounds, senior Maria Rains had 10, senior Tabitha Poje 9 with 7 rebounds, junior Adriana Segar 9 with 9 rebounds and Brooke Jones 2 points. Polo’s second game of the tournament Polo met with the 2nd ceded Lathrup Mules. Polo came from behind and snatched the lead late in the second quarter after trailing the first half. Lathrop battled back and regained the lead. In what remained a close game Polo fell to Lathrop 58-54. Three juniors led the Polo team Adriana Segar with 19 points and 6 rebounds, Sidney Copeland 18 and 9 rebounds, Danielle Allen with 11 and 6 rebounds, Tabitha Poje added 3 and Maria Rains 3. Coach Keith had this to say after playing Benton JV, “The girls lacked some intensity early on in the game but really stepped it up 2nd quarter. Good team defense was key yet again holding our opponent under 30 points. The girls had a very good showing at the Lathrop Tournament capturing the 3rd place trophy.” The Polo boys also participated in the Bill Burns Classic Basketball Tournament. Polo played the #1 ceded East Buchanan and the tournament Champs their first game on Monday night at 9 PM. Polo fell to a very well coached and talented East Buchanan team 72-38. During the 4th quarter the game was a 4 point game and nail biter for the Polo fans. Polo lost to Northland 67-56 in the final minutes of the game. Coach Larry Rains stated after the last game played in the tournament, “It was a very disappointing week. The upside is we are improving and with the proper attitude and good health, I feel we will become a very competitive team.”
