The metro might have put the Capi- tals public-transport system on the fast track, butit s certainly not on a roll atleast until now. Money, after all, makes the world and the wheels of the metro go round and figures re- veal that the new trains on the block are suffering from the same old problem: operational costs exceed returns in rupees. While we estimated that there would be 2 lakh commuters daily and the earnings would touch Rs 8 lakh, revenue accruing from the metro hovers around the Rs 5.5 lakh mark. This, when it costs ar- ound Rs 6 lakh a day to keep the metro operational, reveals a sen- ior DMRC official, However, the financial feasibility of the metro can only be ascertained when its service route is extended beyond Shahdara-Tis Hazari. W ith its ticket turnover in the red, the DMRC has come up with a magic formula: if the passenger doesn t come to the metro, the metro will go to the passenger! So, the DMRC will pick up Delhiites from various colonies and drop them back home after they have enjoyed a ride on the metro. But these joyrides will come at a price, points out DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal, Its just that we want to br- oaden the revenue-earning scope of the metro and make it a tourist draw beyond the public-transport service it now provides. While the DMRC initially proposes to put its plan into action in South Delhi, it has already approached certain tour-operators to include a ride on the metro as a tourist attraction along with, say, a visit to the Qutab Minar or the Red Fort. Even while the metro was under construction, a large number of foreigners and em- bassy officials evinced interest in itspotentialasatouristattraction, says Dayal, Keeping this in mind, we have decided to earn addition- al revenue by making the metro part of a complete tourist pack- age. The metro mean mean busi- ness. So, not only has the DMRC contacted sponsors to run a bus service to and from colonies, it has also set its sights on schoolkids as potential passengers. We have constituted an advisory committee of school principals to organise metro rides for schoolchildren, informs DTTDC chairman Ro- mesh Sabharwal. Of course, money is not the only problem on the DMRC s hands. For, there have been instances of people answering the call of nature in the open at metro stations. Message:

ARIES (March 21 - April 19) When youbegan the week you felt almost defeatedby the slow pace. Now things have begunmoving so swiftly that, instead, you re

worried about dealing with everything thateach day offers. Focus on the big picture. While details can t be neglected, they re

b e s tdecided on later, when you know more.TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) By this week-end s close, you ll have made life-chang-

ing decisions. These may not seem all that impor-tant now. But with every passing day - and in some

cases, every hour - you ll begin to realisethat as you embrace the future you mustinevitably leave elements of the past be-hind you.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) You were hoping thatyou could glide around potentially tricky issueswithout a confrontation. While you re likely to avoid

the intense difficulties that you ve beendreading, putting off frank discussionswill only lead to complications in thefuture. It s time that everybody put their

cards on the table, including you.CANCER (June 21 - July 22) For weeks you vebeen cautious, aware that close ties at work or on

the domestic front were under stress. Butnow that Mercury, which has been ac-centing such partnership matters, is nolonger retrograde, their position

should improve considerably. Enough, in fact, thatthere s no justification for cosseting them any

longer.LEO (July 23 - August 22) Nobody wouldblame you for wondering what others areup to. They almost seem to be defying your

suggestions or requests. Before you get upset, justhave a little chat with them. Youre likely todiscover that their bad behaviour has moreto do with misunderstandings than any-thing more sinister.VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) No-

body takes commitments more gravely than a Virgo. This is the reason that you now face conflicts, if not

a serious crisis. But asking for help hasn teven occurred to you. Do so, however, and not only will you get the assistanceyou need, you ll be touched by others
