Researchers found that the total numberof articles on climate change printed overthree years was fewer than onemonthsworth of articles featuring health issues. The articles offeredmixedmessages aboutthe seriousness and imminence of problemsfacing the environment.

Climate change, therefore, may not be highenough on themedia agenda to stimulate thesort of public concern that prompts concertedpolitical action. Themediamaywell continueto focus its attention on health, the economyor crime, thereby drawing public attentionaway from the issue of climate change.

Dr Gavin is currently undertaking a programmeof seminars that will help climate scientistsaround Britain understand the nature of press, television andweb coverage of their subject, and how theymight engagemore effectivelywith themedia andwith the public.

An example of the topical and relevantwork taking place in the department isDr Neil Gavins research on climate changeand how it is portrayed in themedia. Dr Gavinhas researchedwidely in the field of mediarepresentations of the economy, Europe andthe euro, and their impact on the British public. He has recently been studying how climatechange is refracted through the web, and isrepresented on television and in the press.

Dr Gavin believes the way themedia handlesissues like climate change shapes the publicsperception of its importance. Limited coverageis unlikely to convince readers that climatechange is a serious problem that warrantsimmediate and decisive action.

Dr Gavin explains: Our research suggests thatthemedia is not treating these issues with theseriousness that scientists would say theydeserve. The research company lpsos-MORIfound that 50%of people think the jury is stillout on the causes of global warming. Thelimited amount of media coverage whichtends to be restricted to the broadsheets means that this statistic is unlikely to alterin the short-term.
